On June 17th, Damian and Andrew Ellner received community service awards for their continued work in helping animal rescues as well as the community. Even as they wound down to the final days of school, students at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park turned their attention to thinking of planet earth. SSCM Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Lisa Shirreffs shared a fun and earthfriendly recycling activity with her students during the last week of school. Collecting thousands of used crayons, the students got involved in a community service
through the “Crazy Crayons Project,” which has made it possible to stop 105,000 pounds of unwanted crayons from going into landfills with the help from schools, organization educators and kids across this country. This national crayon recycling program is simple and brilliant. Students collect unwanted crayons, used, broken, unpopular colors. They then have a fun time sorting, counting and boxing them up and
shipping them to Crazy Crayons, where they are melted down and made into new crayons. These new crayons are sent to hospitals, orphanages and inner city schools. The students found this to be a great interactive learning experience and it was a perfect way for our youngest students to have a way to give back to others.

We can all use a little sunshine in our lives. No matter how happy we may be, there is always room for more. It is a life source, a beacon of positivity, light, warmth – all features whose benefits have the ability to make daily life that much more fulfilling. Sure, not everyone is a “summer” person. But I don’t know of too many who fail to embrace the positive qualities a little daylight provides. Come winter, spring, summer or autumn, the sun shines on, allowing all those who wish to bask in its glow. Don’t get me wrong. I love a good thunderstorm just as much as the next person. There is something about inclement weather which
affords the easy excuse to be just a bit more unproductive than when the sun is shining brightly. One doesn’t feel so guilty sleeping a little later, pushing aside some of those errands, saving that running around for another day. To everything, and everyone, there is a season. Luckily for us, we have four distinct ones to enjoy – or count the days down until they pass – whichever method you prefer. For me, I say it is always better to appreciate that time rather than wish it away. Six months ago, we were checking off the days until summer vacation and beach weather and all the rest that comes with extended hours of sunshine was to arrive. And six months from now, we shall
be doing the same. Such is the circle of life. Personally, I make it my mission to witness as many sunsets as possible and – though it pains me to “rise and shine” quite that early – even my fair share of sunrises. There is something quite magical about the dawning of a new day; same with the golden glow which overtakes the landscape as the sun prepares to dip below the horizon. So go outside, take a walk, absorb your surroundings. Take it all in. Allow the warmth of the sun to touch your soul. It’s the most natural form of healing we have, and it’s there for the taking. Embrace it. Happy Summer to all.

Memorable Transition Deer Park’s excited second-graders – 138 at John Quincy Adams Primary School and 170 at May Moore Primary School – enjoyed respective moving up ceremonies on June 14th and June 9th, beginning the next step on their educational journeys as they ready themselves to take on new challenges at John F. NEW EAGLE HONOREE - Town of Babylon Councilman Tom Donnelly recently attended the Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony for Boy Scout Troop 157’s Gregory Garrison of Deer Park. The Eagle Scout is the highest ranking available in the Boy Scouts Organization. For his Eagle Scout project, Gregory created murals at the May Moore Elementary School in Deer Park for the benefit of children with autism. Councilman Donnelly presented Gregory with an official Town of Babylon proclamation to honor him for his achievement and thanked him for his service to the community.
Pool Smart from Deer Park’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School were recognized by Suffolk County Legislator Lou D’Amaro for entering his “Be Pool Smart” poster contest. Omprakash was named the overall second place winner in the contest. “Thank you all for supporting both Oviya and
our efforts to keep children safe in the water this year and always,” said D’Amaro, who made a personal visit to the school on June 14th to bestow certificates of distinguished achievement to each of the students, and a Legislative District 17 Pool Smart proclamation to Omprakash.

Imploring his fellow graduates to “relish the moment,” salutatorian Peter Demopoulos, the senior class president, said, “You spent the last four years of your life resetting the clock. We have reached the pinnacle of our education, yet this is only the beginning.” After senior vocalists performed Deer Park High School’s alma mater, valedictorian Kathryn Block addressed the Class of 2016. “So many of you have real-life experiences, and that’s what really matters,” Block said. “Life is not about the destination…it’s about the journey.” The guest commencement speaker was Cindy True, the valedictorian of the Class of 2006. prouder of what you’ve accomplished. My challenge to you is to make a difference in the world. Ultimately, you’ll be judged by the friends you kept and the way you treated people. Always remember that.” The graduates moved their tassels and tossed their caps in the air as the high school phase of their educational adventure was completed. A s s i s t a n t Superintendent for Pupil Personnel Services Frank Caliguiri, retiring after 26 years in the district, shared some words at what was his final graduation. “As I sat down to write, there were so many things going through my head,” Caliguiri said. “When you think about it, we’re all going through the same thing…all entering a new phase in our lives. Proudly capping off their years of hard work and dedication in the Deer Park School District, the seniors of the Class of 2016 celebrated their graduation on June 24th. One by one, students’ names were announced as they received their diplomas and received congratulations from Board of Education members, curriculum associates, Superintendent Eva J. Demyen and Principal James Cummings, who is leaving the high school to become the district’s assistant superintendent for pupil personnel services. The ceremony began with the processional by members of the American Celtic Pipe Band, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, which was led by Student Council President Papri Basu, and the National Anthem, performed by Alec Winters. Music was provided by the Deer Park High School Symphonic Band and the Ninth Grade Band under the direction of Jerry Cannarozzo.
