Classes will be held at the Babylon Town Hall Annex Building, Room 15, 281 Phelps Lane in North Babylon. Mural Painting is a 5-week course for children 9 to 12 years of age. Summer Arts Classes
Island Lighthouse, the Montauk Lighthouse or any number of tourist attractions in New York City, I always find a new angle to appreciate, a slightly different perspective to photograph. Of course, with a holiday such as the 4th of July, it’s always nice to view a few fireworks. With rare exception, this has generally meant sitting out on the deck in hopes that the neighbors had managed to obtain some sparkly explosives, or, if it wasn’t too crowded, taking a ride down to the local town beach to view the show from across the Bay. One year, a friend and I were inspired to check out the annual show at Eisenhower Park. After realizing that we should have probably allowed more time, resorting to parking on the side of Hempstead Turnpike and then wandering aimlessly around the park after having somehow missed the main entrance - we arrived. Or so we thought. We had literally walked into what was the staging setup for

the fireworks show. Talk about a front row seat. After hurriedly realizing this was not, in fact, the viewing area, we wound up walking/running what seemed like miles, following the distant sounds of explosions, until we came upon the rest of the crowd, who had most likely gotten there hours before. As we set up our blanket and settled down to watch what remained of the show, there was one final burst of color in the sky. And then… silence. The end. And that, ladies and gentlemen, was the first and last “real” fireworks show I have ever attended. A priceless memory nonetheless, one that is fondly reflected upon whenever the holiday nears. Here’s hoping everyone has a safe summer and enjoys whatever adventures it may bring. Just remember, you need not travel far to see beautiful sights… and make beautiful - if not brief - memories.

A Special Evening Deer Park High School held its annual Senior Awards ceremony on June 8th, filling the school’s auditorium with proud families eager to see highachieving members of the Class of 2017 receiving department awards, schoolwide awards and scholarships. After class treasurer Joseph Etersque led the
Pledge of Allegiance, and fellow senior Jacie Matera sang the National Anthem, Principal Charles Cobb spoke to the graduating students and the presentation of awards began. Deer Park’s jazz ensemble, under the direction of Jerry Cannarozzo, provided a soothing backdrop of Chick Corea’s “Spain”
during intermission. “This event gives us an opportunity to recognize our students and all of their vast accomplishments, and showcases the many skills and talents of our outstanding student body,” said Cobb. “It is a special evening that all students and their families will remember fondly.”
ANNIVERSARY DINNER - Our Lady of the Rosary Council N0. 4428, Knights of Columbus in Deer Park recently celebrated their 60th Anniversary 1957–2017 by hosting an Anniversary Dinner Dance on Friday, June 9th, in the Father Kayser Banquet Hall at their council. Grand Knight Vincent DiPasquale was the host of this gala event. Members and guests enjoyed a cocktail hour, sit down dinner followed by a grand dessert buffet. The history of the council via photographs was presented in a power point display on a large viewing screen. Five Past Grand Knights were in attendance.

Town of Babylon Councilwoman Jackie Gordon recently joined with board members and staff of the Babylon Industrial Development Agency (IDA) at an annual award ceremony to recognize local graduating high school seniors who plan on continuing their education at technical schools. A total of eleven $500 scholarships were distributed to the students,
all residents of the Town of Babylon. These hardworking students will learn important skills that will contribute to the development of a sophisticated workforce that’s needed on Long Island, an ideal that remains a core component of the IDA’s mission. This year’s scholarship winners are Enrique Murcia, Brandon Lugo, Monique McDonald, Serafina Shaner, Patrick J.
Nealon, Devyn Chambers, Ryan Dilavore, Kelsey Christiansen, Brenden Lynch, Hailey Smith, and Azly Gonzalez. Councilwoman Gordon congratulated each of the students and wished them well with their career pursuits. Poetry, Posters, and Patriotism Deer Park’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School held a wide-ranging Flag Day celebration this year, coordinated by fifthgrade teacher Audrey Schulter. She was assisted by band teacher Lou Nicolosi, who assembled a special Flag Day Band to provide the accompanying music for the ceremony. Serving as honored guests this year were Col. Stephen Labate, a U.S. Army Reserve officer and father of fifth-grader twins Maria Labate and Michael Labate Jr., and Sgt. Charles Bianculli, an Army veteran who was presented with a hand-print American flag by JFK’s Let’s Make a Difference Club. Local Girl Scouts from Troop 801 presented a flagfolding demonstration, while Eagle Scout Michael Charumaneeroj spoke to the students about patriotism. Schulter had earlier
