Primary Students Move Up Deer Park’s youngest graduates – 132 second graders from John Quincy Adams Primary School and 119 from May Moore Primary School – celebrated their ascension to John F. Kennedy Intermediate School in a proud pair of sunny moving up ceremonies. JQA’s event on June 13 featured the students singing “Well, It’s Been Fun,” “A Million Dreams” and “Best Day of My Life.” May Moore’s moving up a day later included a rendition
of the school song as well as “America” and a medley of tunes from “The Greatest Showman.” The May Moore ceremony marked an emotional farewell to Principal Alicia Konecny, who was also moving up to be the district’s new its assistant superintendent for pupil personnel services. Both ceremonies paid tribute to retiring Superintendent Eva Demyen and featured a welcome address from the next principal of JFK, Kelly Benson.
“The moving up ceremony is one of my favorite events of the year, met with plenty of emotions,” said JQA Principal Christopher Molinelli. “Watching these young boys and girls grow and blossom over the past three or four years is quite amazing. Everyone couldn’t be prouder of our graduates and we will miss them all. We’re looking forward to hearing about all of the great things they will do in their future.”
Dietitian Gives Nutrition Advice Joelle Porush, a retail registered dietitian at the local ShopRite, recently visited with Deer Park secondary students – including seventh grade family and consumer science classes, life skills students and high school food and nutrition classes – to discuss the importance
of eating healthy, how nutrition effects our bodies, how to examine the different nutrients listed on a nutrition facts label, and how to create a simple, healthy five-ingredient meal. “We had a great time, and the students showed a lot of interest in nutrition,”
said Porush. “Joelle provided our students the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of nutrition through hands-on experiences,” said teacher Gabriella Gilmartin. “She is a fantastic resource for the Deer Park community.”

The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together Long Island is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). RTLI was founded in 1992 by a small group of volunteers that were eager to help needy homeowners. Today they have one paid employee and 200 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. Their experienced volunteers perform the vast majority of the work they do and they come from all walks of life. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-up and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard-work from this organization worth it. There are countless testimonials from those who have received help from Rebuilding Together Long Island. Recently the organization received a letter of thanks for all their help that was extremely touching. The sender wrote, “I just want to reach out again to thank all involved with the preparation and construction of the ramp for my dad. It has been a sincere pleasure; from the first meeting with Marian and Kathy, to meeting Joe and coming up with the plan, and then witnessing the building process. The crew were all so wonderful and inspiring! I was amazed at how quickly and smoothly it all came together! Not only is the ramp functional, it’s beautiful and brightens up the dark patio! It was a great moment when I first wheeled my father down the driveway, onto the sidewalk, and
he raised up his arms with a big smile and loudly exclaimed “Hello world, I’m here!” I can hear my mom saying “God is good” and I want to add, thank God for good people.” With the support of all of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. They need your help to keep up the momentum! There are four main ways you can get involved with their organization: 1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. 2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great opportunity team building and a community leadership opportunity for your employees. Why not demonstrate your organization’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life on Long Island! 3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am. 4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization. Funding is a continuous requirement to support their efforts. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. The money you donate stays on Long Island to help our Long Island neighbors! At Deer Park’s June 18 Board of Education meeting, the district honored numerous impressive student achievements and said farewell to longtime Superintendent Eva Demyen, who is retiring. The evening began with a performance of a song by Robert Frost Middle School students from Rachel Burkel and Stephanie O’Connell’s classes and the Friends of Frost Social Club, which was dedicated to Demyen, along with the screening of a film on Frost’s BandAid Project and the presentation of a certificate to Frost student Stephanie Sheeler. Next up was recognition of John F. Kennedy Intermediate School’s Math Olympiad winners by adviser Lisa Baker. The 21 students honored were
Danny Alvarado-Valle, Vincent Cacciola, Arianna Chowdhury, Emily Dong, Katherine Flores, Adam Hassanin, Adan Herrera, Ethan Nelson, Cristian Miller, Gianna Montes, Nobin Nath, Dave Osorio Lara, Mollie Pellicano, Frankie Pisano, Jaidyn Schabe, Jayna Singh, Allessandra Tejero, Arib Uddin, Hailey Weisse, Eshan Zaman and Ali Zorakhsh. Ashley Rosenberg, the district administrator for ENL and world languages, then presented the winners of the 2019 Grand Concours National French Contest, an annual competition sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French. Robert Frost Middle School honorees included bronze medalist Anabelle Thelisma and honorable mention
winners Emily Kleiber, Alexis Lazarte, Eadie Liu, Adithan Omprakash, Ayesha Shaukat and Anthony Vasquez; Deer Park High School honorees were gold medalist Saima Hoque, silver medalists Victoria Egan and Bartlett Polster, bronze medalists Kristin D’Souza, Sameer Riaz, Naomi Sauveur and Diondra Talleyrand, and honorable mention winners Rebecca Fox and Esteysy Yanes Amaya. Business-minded high schoolers participating in the DECA club were then presented with certificates by adviser Gregory Menig. Closing out the evening and the moving tribute to Demyen’s remarkable career, Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer presented her with a proclamation presentation.
Club Unveils Buddy Bench The Falcon Friends Club at Deer Park’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School hosted a buddy bench dedication ceremony on June 19, joined by administration, staff, parents, Board of Education members and representatives of club sponsor Realty Direct NY. Falcon Friends, a new club at JFK, was guided by two co-advisers, art teacher Briana Nussbaum and special education teacher Joseph Verdicchio. The organization’s goal is to bring students of differing abilities together to build
friendships and appreciate each other’s differences. Over the course of the year, students were able to collaborate, problem solve and build meaningful friendships. Members of Falcon Friends worked hard on designing and painting the bench during club time. During the ceremony, fourth grader Glenn Calautti and fifth grader Mackenzie Rubinstein unveiled the bench. Following the reveal, fourth graders Nadia Elsergany and Gina Garcia spoke about the purpose of
the bench and how it will help students to make new friends at JFK. “The Falcon Friends Club built friendships and relationships as we worked toward a common goal of constructing our buddy bench,” Verdicchio said. “I am honored to see the teamwork and effort that was shown throughout the project.” “It was such a privilege to work with these students,” said Nussbaum. “Their empathy and compassion towards one another is so admirable. I am proud of their hard work.”

Deer Park High School honored exceptional athletic efforts by varsity teams on spring sports awards night, held on May 30 at the high school’s auditorium. Members of the baseball, girls golf, kickline, boys lacrosse, girls lacrosse, softball, boys tennis, boys spring track and girls spring track, teams were lauded,
receiving certificates and plaques including Most Valuable Player awards, Coaches Awards, Spirit Awards and ScholarAthlete awards. “Without our coaches and athletes putting in the commitment and hard work that they do, we wouldn’t have a fighting chance at being successful,” said Athletic
Director Dominick Fontana. “We thank them for all the sacrifices they made.” Fontana also expressed gratitude to the Board of Education, administration and parents for their continued support as well as the Booster Club for sponsoring both the event and scholarships.

A Commitment To ‘Be Pool Smart’ Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) is reminding residents that although the warm weather is here and many are eager to jump in the swimming pool, safety must always come first. On June 12, Legislator Donnelly met with students at John F. Kennedy (JFK) Intermediate School in Deer Park to honor those who participated in Suffolk County’s 2019 “Be Pool Smart” poster contest and to thank them for their commitment to swimming safety. Established in 2007, the annual competition invites elementary school
students to promote the importance of pool safety and prevent accidental drownings by creating a poster illustrating safety tips. In the “Be Pool Smart” poster contest, one entry is selected from all of those submitted Countywide to be used as a part of a seasonal safety campaign from the Suffolk County Department of Health Services. Students from schools in South Huntington, Half Hollow Hills, Deer Park and North Babylon School Districts were invited to participate in this year’s
District 17 preliminary competition. This year’s local winner was JFK Intermediate School 4th Grade Student Emerson Smulian. She received a special Proclamation from Legislator Donnelly. “I commend all of the students for their wonderful posters highlighting the importance of pool safety,” said Legislator Donnelly. “This, combined with the information provided by the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, should go a long way in making it a great and safe summer season for all.”
