They played an exciting game, winning the championship title, 4-1. All the girls gave it everything they had. The Suffolk County Department of Health Services develops and implements programs designed to help children adopt healthy nutritional practices and increase physical activity. It was required in 2012 by New York State to collaborate with Nassau County, Long Island hospitals and community agencies to conduct a community health assessment and create a community health plan for the years 20142017. The collaborative team became an entity called the Long Island Health Collaborative, which chose two priority areas to focus on for the coming years, chronic diseases and obesity. The SHARP Award was created in 2013 to recognize school districts that promote wellness in the educational environment and in the community. “The movement in health care is toward wellness, prevention and personal responsibility,” said Tomarken. “The Deer Park School District, through its policies and activities, is helping to promote healthy choices that support wellness and has earned the 2015 SHARP Award.”

Visit To Headquarters Vanessa Whitney’s constitutional law class at Deer Park High School recently visited Suffolk County Police Department headquarters during National Police Week, interacting with police officers and taking part in DWI and CSI simulations as well as witnessing K-9

high school students to create a 30 second public service announcement (PSA) video incorporating their interpretation of the negative health effects associated with consuming stimulant drinks. One entry is selected from each legislative district to go on and compete at the County level where one video is ultimately chosen from amongst all of the district winners to be shown as a PSA on Cablevision. Students who worked directly on the winning entry and received individual Certificates

of Distinguished Achievement included: Lulu Amah, Debbie Baculima, James Depre, Karishma Shah and Stephanie Vaia. Ms. Werner and the entire club were presented with a Proclamation for display in the school. The winning video was shown at the meeting following the presentation. These adverse health impacts may include: insomnia, headaches, restlessness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, irritability and rapid heartbeat.

Members of the Deer Park High School Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) club and their advisor Janet Werner were recently honored by Suffolk Legislator Lou D’Amaro as the 2015 winners of the Suffolk County “Truth about Stimulant Drinks” video contest. The presentation took place at the Suffolk County Legislature’s General Session on Tuesday, June 9th, in Riverhead. In conjunction with a public awareness campaign, the County Legislature annually invites

Damian Ellner, a fifth grader at JFK Intermediate School in Deer Park, has been selected as a local winner of the Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program. These are awards granted to children based on their community service. Damian received an award for his work with Kids Adopt-a-Shelter, as well as Fur Babies Rescue. Through the fall of 2014, Damian and his

brother Andrew worked every weekend raising awareness, as well as fundraising and collecting pet food donations. He got his school involved in the efforts as well. Damian was able to raise over $8,000 in cash, gift cards and pet food donations for his four adopted shelters (Fur Babies Rescue, Last Chance Animal Rescue, NY Pet Rescue and Our

Best Friends Rescue). He was also a part of the KAS Santa Box Project, where several KAS kids worked to fill 30 boxes with donations for animal shelters who were not “adopted” during the holiday drive. Damian continues his work with KAS and various animal rescues volunteering at adoption and community events, as well as the coming KAS 3rd Annual Fashion Show.
