Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

The Charity of the Month for June is: New Ground www.newground.org
New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties by dealing with it’s underlying causes, rather than merely treating symptoms. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come! This organization provides a portfolio of programming delivered by professionals, so that a set of services is customized in a unique way for each Veteran and family they serve. This way they can solve all of the underlying causes of their situation at the same time. They truly believe that this is how you break the cycle of homelessness! Since opening their doors in 1991, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and in permanent stable housing. This week I would like to share yet another success story. Please note: The name of the individual mentioned in this story has been changed for confidentiality purposes. A Long Island resident, Tina, found New Ground when she was facing eviction from her apartment and had nowhere to go with her two young sons. She had fallen behind on rent because of a significant decrease in her paycheck and she did not have the means to pay off this debt or to afford a new apartment. She moved into the Long Term Housing Program with New Ground, where she paid an affordable rent based on her income and began to receive all the intensive social work and education services necessary to help her turn things around. While in the program, Tina paid off significant debts on her credit report, increased her score by over 200 points, created a savings and secured better paying stable employment. However, her real focus was education. She agreed with New Ground that the way out of her cycle of poverty was a higher degree to ensure greater
income. Tina juggled work, school and raising two boys along with many other life responsibilities during her years with New Ground. She attended an Associate Degree program part time and finished in three years. She then immediately started a Bachelor Degree program, which she completed in three years. Following each accomplishment, she secured better paying employment and used her extra earnings to reach her financial goals. Upon completing the New Ground program and moving into a market rent apartment, she continued her education plan. This May she graduated with her Master Degree in Social Work and this summer she will become a homeowner! Tina stated, “I feel awesome, I feel accomplished. It has been a long journey. I’m just happy and overwhelmed. I love working with people and there is a big need for people to care for other people now. It’s what New Ground did for me, helping me to get where I am. Now it’s my turn to help someone else.” As you can see, New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. They are currently in need of volunteers to help out in various areas of their organization. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available. You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services. Deer Park High School recognized the achievements of its best and brightest on June 6, handing out numerous scholarships, department awards and schoolwide awards at the annual Senior Awards night as proud families looked on. Student Council President Katherine Cho began the ceremony with the Pledge of Allegiance, before Jada Smith led the attendees in singing “The Star-Spangled
Banner.” The school’s jazz ensemble, directed by Jerry Cannarozzo, provided tasteful music before and during the event, including Steely Dan’s “Peg” and John LaBarbera’s “Tiger of San Pedro.” “This is truly one of the special evenings for us here at the high school,” said Principal Charles Cobb. “Our students here are being recognized for their vast accomplishments, not only this year, but through their many years in the
Deer Park school system.” “Each and every one of us in this auditorium has been incredibly impressed by each and every one of you on the stage tonight, and I know all of us cannot wait to see what you do next,” said Associate Principal Sean O’Brien. “Please take this evening as an opportunity to celebrate the miles you put behind you as you prepare for the miles that lie ahead.”
Students Find A “Spark!” Deer Park High School’s business students competed in Northwell Health System’s Spark! Challenge this spring, held at the Crest Hollow Country Club. Earlier in the year, the students spent a day shadowing accountants in Northwell’s corporate finance office to learn about accounting careers. They were then challenged with creating a poster
to advertise a career in accounting while tying the poster’s message in to Northwell’s “CARE” mission, which stands for connectedness, awareness, respect and empathy. The students had to create a presentation that highlighted what they learned during their jobshadowing experience at Northwell, which also had to relate to the poster that they had created about the
CARE mission. Finally, the Deer Park students made a presentation to Northwell executives, including the CEO and CFO, under the watchful eye of the finance department’s management team. “This was an outstanding experience for our students to be able to work with industry professionals and present to high-level executives,” said business teacher Jill Perry-Eising.

Reinforcing Math Knowledge
Bixhorn Named Associate Principal The Deer Park School District has named Jack Bixhorn as an associate principal for Robert Frost Middle School, replacing Philip Paniccia, the incoming principal of the district’s May Moore Primary School. Bixhorn’s nine years of classroom experience most recently included working as a sixth grade math and science teacher and elementary math specialist in the East Rockaway School District. He previously taught algebra and grades 6-8 special education at the Dr. Richard Izquierdo Health
and Science Charter School in the Bronx. A resident of Long Beach, he earned his bachelor’s degree in health science from the University of Delaware
and a dual master’s degree in elementary education and special education as well as a middle school math extension certificate from St. John’s University. He recently completed a postgraduate program in school building and districtl through the College of Saint Rose. “I am excited to join the Deer Park school community,” said Bixhorn. “My goal as the associate principal of Robert Frost is to cultivate a safe, caring and supportive learning environment that promotes success for all students.”
At Deer Park’s John Quincy Adams Primary School, the annual Math Fair on May 22 found students participating in a variety of different learning centers ranging from basic
skills to mathematics in daily life. Based on the school’s math curriculum, these activities help to reinforce what was learned throughout the year. “Our goal is to
foster positive learning experiences in order for the students to develop a love of math,” said JQA math lab specialist Marianna Grieco.
The Deer Park School District has named Philip Paniccia as the new principal of May Moore Primary School, replacing Alicia Konecny, the incoming assistant superintendent for pupil personnel services. Paniccia had served since 2016 as an associate principal at the district’s Robert Frost Middle School. He previously worked as a teacher for 10 years in the Sayville School District and as principal of Sayville Summer School, following a 15-year career in financial service. A Setauket resident and graduate of Sachem High School, Paniccia earned his bachelor’s degree in child study, master’s degree in liberal studies and advance graduate degree
in Patchogue and Stony Brook University. “I couldn’t be more excited to become the new principal of May Moore and to continue serving the REINFORCING MATH KNOWLEDGE - Learning center activities at John Quincy Deer Park community,” said Adams Primary School’s annual Math Fair helped to reinforce what was learned by Paniccia. “I look forward to students throughout the year.
