Senior Science Star Deer Park High School senior and valedictorian Kyle Devine was recently honored as the school’s Outstanding Senior Science Student at the 39th Annual Awards Dinner of the Suffolk Section of the Science Teachers Association of New York State. Devine, a well-rounded and BRINGIN’ IT BACK - Constantino Brumidi Lodge #2211 brought it Back To The extraordinarily gifted 50’s recently, with members and friends dressing for the times! student who also serves as president of the school’s National Honor Society, a varsity baseball player, a math team competitor and a student council volunteer, was chosen for the award by the school’s science department, based on his outstanding science achievements throughout his high school career. This year’s Suffolk Section awards ceremony, held at the Hyatt Regency Long Island, showcased DEER PARK AT DISNEY - Deer Park Jazz at Disney 01, Deer Park Jazz at Disney 01: The Deer Park High School Jazz Ensemble and director Jerry Cannarozzo performed at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla. as part of the Disney Performing Arts OnStage program. More than 100 attendees were on hand to congratulate the students, including Devine’s mentor, Deer Park science teacher David Knuffke. “Kyle is one of the most academically talented students whom I have ever worked with, and he is also more loved and respected by more facets of our community than I can recall any one student ever being,” said Knuffke. “He is a remarkable person in so many different ways, and for all of the talk of a ‘STEM crisis’ in this country, I will say that as long as students like Kyle are moving into the field, we won’t have much to worry about.” Suffolk Section, a
division of STANYS, is an association of science educators from kindergarten through college, working to improve science education in New York State and Suffolk County. Suffolk Section organizes, sponsors and runs numerous activities for students and teachers throughout the year, culminating in the Awards Dinner. “It was a great night where truly outstanding students and teachers were recognized for four years of hard work,” said Brian Vorwald, co-chairman of the event. “Suffolk County and all of Long Island has made tremendous strides in science, with an unprecedented number of Siemens and Intel finalists. It was a difficult task for school districts to choose just one recipient.”

Each grade had an opportunity to showcase the most exciting things they learned throughout this past school year at last week’s SSCM Curriculum Parade. From circus-themed first graders to creative poetry written by older students, spectators were entertained and impressed from start to finish. Third graders invented businesses and shared their wares with the audience in the form of poster boards and props galore. Meanwhile, seventh and eighth graders provided a demonstration of the small-scale roller coasters they designed and built with their own hands! Fifth grade students had a bevy of earth-friendly ideas to showcase, covering everything from energy conservation to solar and wind-powered housing. And the crowd adored the second graders who came decked out and ready in
their spiffy First Holy Communion gear, sharing pictures and scenes from their special day, and reciting a beautiful poem about baby Jesus and the blessed mother, Mary. While it seems so easy for children and teachers alike to “check out” mentally during the final days of June, it was refreshing to see how engaged and enthusiastic all of the students and staff were after all of the hard work that went into putting together such a lovely day of curriculum-sharing as one of the last hurrahs of the school year! With a well-defined and simple approach to the Core Curriculum at SSCM this past year, it’s no small wonder that 100% of SSCM graduating students were accepted to their choice of high schools, as they are year after year. Students felt calm and well-prepared about being tested on the material and parents and teachers alike were proud to see the not one SSCM student felt the need to opt out of the Core Curriculum testing this Spring!

Once in awhile, amidst all your bad days, you’ll have a good day. A great day, even. Make sure you remember those days. Keep them safely in the pockets of your coat or in a jar on your desk, because you need to know that there are and will be better days. You need to remember how, on those days, you felt all warm inside, like you’ve just drunk a hot cup of tea, like a small fire has ignited inside of you. Hold on to the warmth and never let it go. My eyes landed upon these words as I scanned through all the usual mundane drivel one tends to come across on Facebook, shared by one of my friends, and many before
her, from one of those sites which tend to cull such inspirational quotes and sayings. I did attempt to look up the original source, but to no avail; such is the gift and curse of the Internet, I suppose. In any case, whomever thought to put such eloquent words to a concept we all preach but seldom seem to practice – bravo! It is, essentially, just a rewording of the tried and true cliché to appreciate each and every day, to live life to the fullest, to know that “however good or bad a situation is, it will change” (yet another of those “famous” unattributed sayings). But, sometimes, we do need to be reminded. All
situations require appropriate perspective, something we often lack in the heat of the moment. And the happy times? Well they tend to get lost in the shuffle, swept aside in favor of dwelling on those days that didn’t go quite according to plan. I think that’s why I love photography so much. Artists Succeed
Students at Deer Park’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School were recently recognized for winning competitions from Covanta and the Suffolk County Reading Council art contest, showing their ambitious artistic skills. The Covanta recycling poster contest, open to all kindergarten through sixth grade students on Long Island, required students to illustrate the importance of recycling. Three JFK students were named prize winners, with third-grader Hannau Rau taking the contest’s grand prize for students in grades kindergarten to third grade. In the grades four to six category, Jayden Pasco placed second and Christine Nguyen took third. The three young artists were honored at a Covanta reception and given trophies, certificates and prizes.
Another JFK student, Rebecca Warkenthien, was awarded an honorable mention in the Suffolk County Reading Council’s art cover contest. The school has entered the contest, in both the writing and art categories, for many years, resulting in JFK being named a SCRC Honor School for the past decade;
however, this marked one of the first times that a JFK student had been recognized for this award. Warkenthien was honored at a reception sponsored by the Suffolk County Reading Council, and her winning art will be published in the SCRC’s journal, to be distributed throughout Suffolk County.

Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with members of the Town Board to welcome the newly appointed ambassadors of the Town of Babylon’s Beautification Committee at their first meeting. The committee is made up of residents and
