BABYLON OFFICIALS WELCOME DINO-SAFARI EXPERIENCE TO DEER PARK - Town of Babylon Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilman Anthony Manetta and Town Clerk Gerry Compitello recently attended a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Dino Safari drive-through experience at the Tanger Outlets at the Arches in Deer Park. The four-week-long event features over 40 animatronic dinosaurs and educational elements about how dinosaurs changed over time. Hours of operation are 9am – 9pm, Wednesday through Sunday. KUHN NAMED DEER PARK HIGH SCHOOL’S STUDENT OF THE MONTH - Junior Kylie Kuhn was recently honored as Deer Park High School’s Student of the Month for May. “Kylie is a spectacular student who takes her academics seriously and always has a good time learning in class,” said Kristen Salemi, who was Kuhn’s Algebra 2 Honors teacher last year. “Her work ethic is unmatched and she is looked to as a leader not only in class but in the sports world as well. She is a member of the girls varsity basketball and lacrosse teams. Kylie is the ultimate well-rounded student who deserves recognition. With COVID precautions motivating more people to cook and grill at home, The FASNY urges all New Yorkers to follow some basic rules to avoid accidents and injuries, and to remember not to hesitate to call for help needed. “The warmer weather will certainly encourage New Yorkers to break out their BBQ’s for outdoor cooking,” said FASNY President John Farrell. “We want all residents to stay safe as we celebrate the coming summer days and consider basic grill safety tips. We also remind everyone to continue to follow applicable social

distancing rules to keep their families, and guests, safe.” According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), from 2014-2018, an average of 19,700 patients per year went to emergency rooms because of injuries involving grills. Gas grills were involved in an average of 10,600 home fires per year, including 3,900 structure fires and 4,900 outdoor fires annually. Keep everyone safe by following the important tips below: Tips from the NFPA and FASNY: Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors; The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches;

Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill area; Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill; Never leave your grill unattended while in use; Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it; Always use foodapproved fire starters for wood grills and smokers. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm www.hobbsfarm.info

Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a non-profit organization with a rich history. It is an 11 acre farm, located at 178 Oxhead Road in Centereach, and is ran entirely by volunteers. This community farm grows and harvests an average of over 50,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to over 11 food pantries / soup kitchens. They also offer CSA Memberships, educational programs, they host community events and they have a seasonal farm stand! If you live nearby the farm and would like to sign up for their Summer and or Fall CSA program, you can. Their crop shares are an easy way to guarantee farm fresh veggies for you and your family all season long. By joining their CSA program you will gain a connection to their farm and know exactly where your vegetables are coming from. You will receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown right in Centereach, while supporting your own neighbors. Their organically grown vegetables are harvested and packed the same day you receive them, cutting time and travel dramatically from field to fork. Members of their Summer CSA can expect to receive a wide variety of summer vegetables, including but not limited to, summer squashes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, cucumbers and a diverse array of greens. Members of their Fall CSA can expect to receive an assortment of winter squashes, potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, carrots, beets, as well as an assortment of greens. Additionally, anyone is welcome to stop by and shop at their farm stand every Saturday from 10 AM - 3 PM, which started on June 12th and runs through October 10th. You will find organically grown produce and every purchase made will support the farm and their mission. Looking to show your support in another way? Volunteers are needed! Depending on the season, Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has a variety of farm work that volunteers

can assist with, such as planting, weeding, harvesting, working in the greenhouse and property maintenance. Individuals and groups are able to volunteer at the farm and community service hours can be given. If you are interested in volunteering, please visit their website and ﬁll out their Volunteer Waiver Form and the contact the farm directly at 631.774.1556 to ﬁnd out when you can start! Due to the pandemic, volunteers must bring a pair of gloves. It it suggested that volunteers bring sunscreen and any food or drink they may need. Lastly, the farm is in need of some repairs; they need a new roof on their barn, plumbing assistance and fountain repair. If you or someone you know would be willing to donate their time and skills to assist in any of these projects, it would be such a blessing to their farm. Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) recently recognized United States Army Sergeant Linda Amato of Deer Park as his 2021 Suffolk County Women Veterans Appreciation Day esteemed honoree. A Deer Park resident, Sergeant Amato has served in the US Army for more than 27 years and is currently in the reserves. Sergeant Amato has Advanced Training as an Army Unit Supply Specialist and an 88M Heavy Wheeled Operator. She earned the following commendations: Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Components

Achievement Medal (2nd Award), National Defense Service Medal (2nd Award), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with “M” Device (2nd Award) and the Bronze Hour Glass. Legislator Donnelly thanked Sergeant Amato for her military service in person on June 10 when he presented her with a County Proclamation in front of her home. He further acknowledged and recognized her courage and service to our country during the Legislature’s Second Women Veterans Appreciation Day Virtual ceremony, held via Zoom on Friday, June 11.

“I am grateful to have the opportunity to honor Sergeant Linda Amato for her selfless service and her many commendations. While she has Veteran’s status, Sergeant Amato is still on active duty in the reserves. Plus, even more special, she is also a public servant who works for USPS in Deer Park with more than 20 years of service,” said Legislator Donnelly. “She is truly deserving of recognition. It’s often said that some of the best ideas are born of necessity and that’s certainly the case with “Camp Color: Summer HumanitiesEnrichment for Middle School Students.” The plan began to gel when teachers Nadine Palumbo and Anthony Vittorino were discussing the detrimental effects of social distancing guidelines, hybrid learning, and a loss of extracurricular activities. “We each witnessed formerly engaged students shutting down and checking out emotionally by turning off their cameras screens and becoming passive,” said Palumbo, adding that “Countless family friends have also addressed concerns about their children’s ‘pandemic slide’ and feelings of depression.” They started testing out different formats, such as a distance-learning talk show to interview artists and authors about their creative process during the pandemic, but that seemed better suited only for high school level remote learning. Palumbo and Vittorino felt the challenges of the past year were particularly harmful to middle school students since, “They will be making a key transition from elementary to secondary school,” said Palumbo, who also serves on the vestry at St. Mark’s as well as on the

The Annual Open House is Wyandanch Public Library’s (WPL) most prestigious event of the year. It is a time for WPL to showcase its great programs, services and resources to the community while having a festive environment. It was also a chance for the community to interact with the helpful staff and take-in first-hand the many services that are being offered. The WPL 48th Annual Open House Day featured information on Educational Resources,

Technology Resources. On Site Learning, Career Support and Adult Literacy Programs. The day’s activities included Arts & Crafts and entertainment featuring a local Author, Robert Williams, and musical guest Roz Brown and many more. The WPL is still closed due to the COVID-19 Pandemic and the need to repair the library’s 36-yearold HVAC system. Most of the services, programs and activities are held virtually. Although the 48th Annual Open House Day was held on the grounds of the

PSEG Long Island is prepared for hurricane season and to meet peak demand during extreme heat situations this summer. The company’s ongoing system improvements and enhancements to the grid help provide electric reliability to Long Island and the Rockaways throughout the year. Since last August, PSEG Long Island has incorporated numerous enhancements and upgrades to the electric grid, its systems and its storm processes, including its contingency procedures. PSEG Long Island’s systems have undergone upgrades, performance tuning and numerous tests. “We are prepared and ready to respond,” said Daniel Eichhorn, president and chief operating officer, PSEG Long Island. “PSEG Long Island is committed to continually improving system reliability and enhancing the experience our customers have when they connect with us, and we have been working nonstop to fulfill that commitment. PSEG Long Island continues to make strategic investments to serve our customers today and in the future.” IT Systems Enhancements and Testing Success PSEG Long Island has continued to make enhancements to its IT systems and has conducted robust testing of the outage management and telephony systems. Last week, PSEG Long Island completed a successful end-to-end test of the version 5.5 outage management and telephony systems in an extreme weather scenario. This endto-end test is in addition to other successful tests, which included one simulating up to 90% of the customer base reporting outages over a 24hour period. Business Continuity and Emergency Procedures PSEG Long Island updated its business continuity and emergency procedures to reflect changes and

updates to address PSEG Long Island’s response in the event of a failure of critical systems. Since last August, PSEG Long Island has conducted three drills of these procedures with its dedicated workforce. Electric Infrastructure Improvements Across Long Island and the Rockaways, PSEG Long Island has prepared the electric infrastructure by focusing on substation, and transmission and distribution improvements, as well as circuit and equipment inspections using drones, helicopters and infrared technology. PSEG Long Island’s recent infrastructure improvements include: New transformers installed in Elmont, Uniondale, Culloden Point, Roslyn, Far Rockaway and Flowerfield substations to provide additional capacity during peak demand 4 new distribution feeder lines installed in Elmont, Uniondale, Roslyn and Flowerfield areas to accommodate load growth 6 distribution circuits upgraded in Kings Point, North Hills, Massapequa, Mitchel Gardens, Lake Success and Rockaway Beach to improve circuit reliability 37 transmission system circuit breakers added or replaced for enhanced system reliability A new transmission circuit installed between the Riverhead and Canal substation A transmission circuit upgraded between the Wildwood and Riverhead substations Storm Hardening Programs Completed Since the implementation of the FEMA-funded stormhardening program funded in 2014, PSEG Long Island has completed storm hardening and reliability work on more than 450 miles of distribution mainline circuits. Stormhardened circuits have seen a significant reduction in

storm damage and 42% fewer outages. PSEG Long Island is proud to continue its storm hardening work with Power On, an initiative started in the spring of 2020 that will continue to improve reliability by strengthening distribution lines, targeting the most vulnerable circuits across Long Island and the Rockaways. Since the launch, an additional 59 miles of distribution mainline circuits have been storm hardened with stronger poles, thicker wire and other modern equipment. Work on the first circuits began in April 2020 and will continue over the next five years. To further protect against storm damage to the energy grid, arborists from PSEG Long Island’s Tree Trimming program work throughout the year to identify and trim tree limbs in rights of way and along easements that could potentially cause outages during or after a storm. In 2020, PSEG Long Island removed more than 8,000 hazardous trees and/or large limbs along the distribution and transmission system and trimmed 2,400 miles of distribution and transmission line clearance in accordance with the industry best practice clearance standard. This standard preserves the health of the tree and directs future growth away from power lines. In addition, a new vine mitigation program identified, cut and treated more than 4,000 vine locations across Long Island and the Rockaways. PSEG Long Island also prepares its dedicated workforce for summer by conducting annual hurricane and tropical storm drills and employee training; by developing emergency summer operating plans; and by performing summerpeak reliability analyses to ensure there is sufficient capacity to meet electric demand on high-heat days.
