Bus Driver Training Ensuring student safety is a top priority, not only in school but also while students travel to and from school. Suffolk Transportation Service (STS) was among a select group of pupil transportation operators in the U.S. chosen by the Federal Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to participate in a training program that encourages coordination between school bus operators and other agencies in emergency situations, such as a terrorism incident.
Multiple Suffolk County school districts recently joined with local emergency responders, including Suffolk County Police, Suffolk County Office of Emergency Management, Bay Shore Fire Department, and New York State Bus Contractor’s Association, at STS’s Saxon Avenue Training Facility to participate in a unique TSA table top training exercise called EXIS (Exercise Information System). The TSA is an agency of the Federal Department of Homeland Security. “Our top priority as a

collaboration and communication among both private and public transportation agencies to prevent, plan, protect and respond to violent acts on busses, railroads, and other methods of surface transportation. During the recent day-long training event, the agencies practiced a number of simulated emergency response scenarios. These included a potentially dangerous device found on a bus and a bus involved in an explosion. At the conclusion of training, the TSA experts reviewed the results of the drills with participants to assess their effectiveness.
They say that what you put out into the universe in the form of energy, you receive back tenfold. In some manner, at some point in time, life cycles back around to pay us the karma we are supposedly owed. Most often, this is associated with the negative end of the spectrum; rarely are the positive applications of this theory every truly recognized and appreciated. I have often looked to those who seem the most consistently content and have wondered what it is that makes them able to sustain such a healthy sense of optimism and an inner peace that radiates outwardly into the universe. Simply put, they are
genuinely happy. They savor those aspects of life which many of us often take for granted. They make it a point to appreciate each and every moment, and to pay it forward in the manner in which they interact with others. To me, these are the types of individuals we should all strive to surround ourselves with, each and every day. Any opportunity to associate with a positive, breath of fresh air-type persona should be welcomed with open arms; there is no such thing as too much sunshine. In the end, it makes the inevitable storm clouds which manifest along the way that much more tolerable. Of course, this concept is not so simple as mere happiness by association. True bliss comes from within, as
who we are and who we desire to become slowly transition toward being one and the same. They say people don’t change, but I wholeheartedly disagree with that sentiment. We each possess a unique capacity to peel back the layers en route to uncovering infinite unknown qualities and characteristics as we continue to evolve over time. And change we do, each and every day, as our interactions with others, the circumstances we are faced with and our growth as human beings develop. There is no end to this evolution. We are a species built on progress. Why not begin with our own respective psyches? With a bit a time and effort, perhaps we, too, can one day be worthy of this admiration once only reserved for others.

Fun Club Led by teacher Marie Tortorici, the Fun Club from Deer Park’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School recently came down to the district’s Robert Frost Middle School to cheer on Frost’s girls softball team. Making
sure not to disappoint their fans from JFK, the team won a great game against Bay Shore that afternoon. “It is always nice to have support at our games, but the kids from the Fun Club holding their signs makes it that much better,” said
coach Keri Schumacher. The goal of the Fun Club skills program is to increase opportunity for children to be socially successful in school and at places in the Deer Park community.
The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization that serves more than 3,000 people each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank, where its Suffolk County United Veterans project is based. The organization was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County; the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans. Services include a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for youth and adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions, providing people, along with our U.S. Veterans, with opportunities to heal and work toward their recovery. Everyone possesses their own unique worth and individuality, and MHAW does a great job providing treatment and services that focus on goals and aspirations specific to each individual person. Volunteer Training
Breast cancer survivors are encouraged to apply and train to become volunteers with the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. Training will be held at Adelphi University in Garden City, starting Tuesday, September 11th. “We have nearly 100 trained volunteers,” says Hillary Rutter, the director of the program. Rutter says that volunteers help
the organization in many different ways. “Some speak in the community about their personal experiences, others help by doing fundraising, community outreach, office work, educational presentations, or respond to callers throughout New York State on our hotline,” she says. Because the hotline volunteers have had breast cancer, it helps them to
understand what it is like to receive a breast cancer diagnosis and the needed treatment that will follow. “When our volunteers answer a hotline call the caller knows that the person they are speaking to has walked in their shoes and understands what they are going through,” says social worker Alida Rubenstein, the

Night of Scholarships In front of a large audience of proud parents and family members, the high-achieving seniors of Deer Park High School accepted thousands of dollars worth of scholarships, department awards and schoolwide awards at the annual Senior Awards ceremony on June 7th. To kick of the event, held in the high school auditorium, Student Council President Saraya Jourdain led her fellow students and the attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by “The StarSpangled Banner,” sung by Briseis del Cid. Director Jerry Cannarozzo and the jazz ensemble entertained the audience with a rendition of Jerome
Kern’s “The Way You Look Tonight” Members of the Horodnicki family presented several scholarship awards to Deer Park High School seniors in memory of Class of 2005 student Ryan T. Horodnicki; Marine Corps Sgt. Silent Walker presented the United States Marine Corps Scholarship Awards, recognizing students for citizenship and leadership in scholastics, athletics and music; Michael Reed, the husband of former Deer Park administrative assistant Rochelle Reed, presented the Rochelle Reed Memorial Scholarship to seniors who will pursue studies in music or theatrical arts; and Suffolk County Legislator
Susan Berland presented a proclamation and county pin to student Taniyamol Tomy for winning the Overcoming Educational Obstacles award. Among the new awards were the Scott Schwartz, DDS Scholarship Award, given by orthodontist Scott Schwartz to a senior planning to pursue a medical or dental career. “We are so proud of our students and all their achievements,” said Associate Principal Kristen Anisis. “We are exceptionally lucky to have such generous community members, politicians, military personnel and school officials who were able to recognize all of their hard work over the years.”

Volunteers are required to take in-depth training, which includes breast education, development of important skills, such as active listening,

The next volunteer training is scheduled for three consecutive Tuesdays, September 11th, 18th and 25th. Musical Growth Showcasing a year’s worth of confident, constant improvement, student-musicians at Deer Park’s Robert Frost Middle School displayed their performance skills at a spring concert on May 16th. Performing ensembles included the jazz band and seventh- and eighth-grade
band, directed by Michael Livorno; the seventh- and eighth-grade chorus, directed by Youngsun KohLee; and the seventh- and eighth-grade orchestra, directed by Maria Wingert. Some highlights included a rendition of the Miles Davis classic “Freddie Freeloader” by the jazz band, Bela Bartok’s
“Echoes of Bartok” by the orchestra, and Swahili song “Dansi Na Kuimba” by the chorus. “I am amazed at the progress and growth that my students make throughout the year,” said Livorno. “The spring concert is the culmination of all their hard work.”

TangerKids Grant At the May 22nd Deer Park Board of Education meeting, Tanger Outlets General Manager Nancy Larson presented a $75,000 grant check to May Moore Primary School teachers Alannah Boccard and Susan Mirman. The funding, part of the TangerKIDS grants program, will support literacy in the school’s
autism program. “It is a pleasure and an honor to give money to worthy causes, and the school systems are clearly our worthiest cause,” said Larson, who noted that this was Tanger’s 10th anniversary in Deer Park. “We are so proud of Mrs. Boccard and Mrs. Mirman,” said Principal
Alicia Konecny. “This grant focuses on concepts of print, repetitive language and using picture clues to tell the context of a story. Big books are beneficial in our autism program because they provide a large visual for small group guided reading. Thank you to Tanger for giving back to their local community.”
