New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come! There are plenty of success stories of people who benefited from their services. One in particular I’d like to spotlight is Nina’s. Nina was a single mother with one son. They both had a chronic illness that significantly impacted their health. She had struggled in the past to establish a life for her family because of the unpredictable nature of their health. All New Ground families and Veterans require a unique approach and plan of action, but this was considerably greater for Nina. She needed supports put in place to ensure her family’s future despite the ongoing need for unexpected lengthy breaks from employment. New Ground helped Nina to secure part time employment that was flexible, willing to adjust her schedule when she or her son suddenly required hospitalization or recovery time at home. Nina did significant work with her Social Worker on budgeting, creating a savings and developing strategies to adjust her spending if her household income suddenly decreased for
weeks at a time. New Ground assisted her with applying and obtaining certain benefits her family was eligible for because of their chronic illness. This included a housing choice voucher, allowing Nina to attain a market rent apartment while she paid an affordable portion of the rent based on her household income. After just under four years, Nina and her son successfully graduated into permanent housing. An apartment was found in the same neighborhood where their program apartment was located, ensuring Nina’s continued easy commute to work and her son’s continuation in the school district he had only recently entered. As you can see, New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. They are currently in need of volunteers to help out in various areas of their organization. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available! You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services. JFK Students Travel To The Mall Heather Buksa’s students at Deer Park’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School recently learned about different ways of traveling
in the community. As a class, they looked up the bus schedule and went over a social story before taking the public bus to the Westfield South Shore
mall in Bay Shore. At the mall, the students went on a scavenger hunt, looking for stores to buy specific items.
A Night Of Personnel Recognition
Deer Park’s May 28 Board of Education meeting was dedicated to recognizing and rewarding personnel, including newly retired, tenured and appointed administrators, teachers and staff. Also honored were those reaching milestones in years of service. Superintendent Eva Demyen began the evening with recognition for school physician Anthony Donatelli, who was recently inducted into the Wrestling Hall of Fame, and John F. Kennedy Intermediate School cafeteria aide Shalay Rutherford, who saved a student from choking by using the Heimlich maneuver. Kindergartners at Deer Park’s May Moore Primary School enjoyed an educational Teddy Bear Clinic, an injury prevention program sponsored by the
Trauma Center at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. Nurses from Stony Brook visited the school to discuss car and helmet safety with the students.
Francis Amendola, Paula Behrens, Cheryl Bica, Debra Bradbury, Aida Buckley, Eve Deitch, Cindy Jewell, Patricia Kurman, Jean Ludlow, Iris Marchon and Joanne Pendzinski; and non-instructional employees Rosalyn Baskin, Ann Castagna, Patricia Collins, Mary Galea, Richard Miller, Pearl Rogers and Philip Russo. “They’ve honed the skills of thousands of students,” said Demyen. “I couldn’t be prouder to be retiring at the same time as such a fine group of people.” Recognized for their years of service were Robert Frost Middle School teaching assistant Phyllis Otto for 35 years; Jack Lovascio and Laurie Schwartz for 30 years; and Laurie Blank, Ann Bullis, Gary Fricke, Steven Jaklitsch, Deana LaPlaca, Krista Militello, Joseph Orecchio and Rosanna Shooshtary for 25 years. “It takes a lot to devote so
much time and energy to one place and one job and I commend them highly for that,” said Demyen. Congratulated for receiving tenure were ESL teachers Joseph Buscarino and Lisa Kiernan and guidance counselor Rachel Glaubach of Deer Park High School; art teacher Michelle Sarco of Robert Frost; ESL teacher Kimberly Essig and elementary teacher Luisa Moynihan of JFK; and special education teacher Alannah Boccard and teaching assistants Erebuni Babakhanian-Gonzalez, Danielle Calandra and Jennifer Paduano of May Moore Primary School. “It’s no easy task getting to this point, so I want to congratulate every single one of you receiving tenure,” Demyen told the proud educators. The night ended with a welcome to incoming Board of Education trustee Jerry D. Jean-Pierre.
At the program’s end, the children donned surgical masks to tend to their injured stuffed animal pals.
