Unique Ways To Honor Dad This Father’s Day Father’s Day is a day many families look forward to. Though its history might not go back as far as many religious or governmentdesignated holidays, Father’s Day is rife with tradition in many households.

Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June in both the United States and Canada and also in the United Kingdom. While Father’s Day might trace its origins to the United States, the holiday is celebrated across the globe, including in Argentina, Greece, India, Singapore, and New Zealand.
Each year, the third Sunday in June is a time to pay homage to fathers and the millions of other men who have stepped into the role of father. While it may seem as though Father’s Day has been around forever, it didn’t become a nationally recognized holiday in the United States until 1972, when President Richard Nixon signed Joint Resolution 187 into law. Many thank Sonora Smart Dodd for making Father’s Day happen. In 1909, while attending a Mother’s Day sermon in church, Dodd felt fathers were equally deserving of praise. To honor her own father, a Civil War veteran and widower
who raised six children alone, Dodd petitioned for a Father’s Day on June 5th (the anniversary of her father’s death) in her native Spokane, Wash. The celebration was deferred to the third Sunday in June. Another account says Grace Golden Clayton came up with the idea for a Father’s Day in 1908 in Fairmont, West Virginia. Clayton was inspired to celebrate fathers after 361 local men perished in a deadly mine explosion. Clayton brought the idea up to the minister of her local church. Historians say that Father’s Day may even be a much older idea. St. Joseph’s Day, which
was celebrated each year on March 19 in Catholic nations of Europe since the medieval era, and later elsewhere around the world, commemorates Joseph, the husband of Mary and father figure to Jesus. It was said that Joseph should be held up as the ideal example of fatherhood. The Coptic Orthodox Church celebrates St. Joseph’s Day on July 20. In the Orthodox Christian Church, the second Sunday before the Nativity is celebrated as the Sunday of the Forefathers — celebrating all of Jesus’ male ancestors, with an emphasis on Abraham, the patriarch of the Jewish faith.

Decorating Hearts To Show Support For Local Law Enforcement Deer Park High School’s Patriot Club and SADD Club recently spearheaded a project to compose messages of support and appreciation for the law enforcement officers of the 1st Precinct. The clubs asked students and teachers from throughout the district – including Robert Frost Middle School, John F. Kennedy Intermediate School, John Quincy Adams Primary
School and May Moore Primary School – to decorate paper hearts that were then used to create a banner that was delivered to the 1st Precinct. “We believe it is important for our local law enforcement personnel to know that they have the respect and appreciation of the young people in the community they serve,” teacher Laurie Osbern said. “It also sends
a positive message of support to our students who have family members in law enforcement, as well as those who may be considering a career in the field. The students’ messages were touching and creative, expressing heartfelt appreciation for the men and women who put their lives on the line daily to protect and serve us all.”

The Charity of the Month for June is
Little Flower Children and Family Services of New York www.littleflowerny.org
Little Flower Children and Family Services of New York (Little Flower) is a human services organization that transforms caring into action to deliver services, programs and direction to improve the lives of children and families in crisis and people with developmental and intellectual disabilities across New York City and Long Island.
Children who have experienced trauma, grief and loss, substance abuse, or have poor social skills, are verbally or physically aggressive, are on the autism spectrum, etc. are offered integrated interdisciplinary treatment in a therapeutic environment at the Residential Treatment Center (RTC) on their Wading River campus. An interdisciplinary treatment team of social workers, mental health staff, childcare staff, educators, medical professionals and a recreation therapist formulate individualized treatment plans that address the specific needs of each of those children. The underlying belief of the center is that a healthy community helps heal. At the RTC, children reside in modern cottages designed to feel like home. The cottages include individual rooms, common areas, a large dining room and a kitchen. Recreational programming there includes the Conway Recreation Center, athletic fields and courts and an outdoor swimming pool. The youth can also participate in off-campus recreation activities such as volunteer services and community involvement. The RTC also offers additional therapies and services, such as the Culinary Arts
Additionally, Little Flower also offers a Mental Health and Medical Department that utilizes a traumainformed, multi-systemic approach to support to all foster children. Adhering to best practices, nurses coordinate and monitor medical care, including overseeing weekly well-child clinic, and provide screenings, child and caregiver education, assist pediatricians with routine physicals and provide body checks as needed.
