Alive and Well I recently read an article in the latest issue of Editor & Publisher magazine which touched on the apparent surge in the success of community newspapers over the last several years, a direct counterpoint to the oftpeddled theory that “print is dead.” The majority of credit for these weeklies’ steady success seems to point to their unique ability to provide extremely localized content that, quite simply, cannot be found anywhere else. In a caring show of community service, seventh-graders at Deer Park’s Robert Frost Middle School in the home and career class of Cindy Adriaenssens and Paula Behrens recently used their knowledge of nutrition and baking to make 40 loaves of homemade whole-grainand-seed bread for The Mercy Inn Soup Kitchen at Trinity Church in

Wyandanch. While honing their skills, the students strengthened a caring community by helping others and contributed to better nutrition by preparing a healthier bread recipe. “I was happy to help,” said student Glen Hope, who helped bake, wrap and deliver the needed loaves. “I’m glad I learned baking and organization skills, so

now I know how to help others in need.” The students are already looking forward to Mercy Inn’s request for future assistance in making rolls and desserts for the soup kitchen. “I am always proud of how our students always rise so enthusiastically to community service opportunities,” said Behrens.

Continued From 10 players was headed up by parent volunteers, Tyrone Peterson and Hilary Troy, who led two SSCM teams, the more veteran Gold Squad of mainly 8th graders with a handful of 7th graders and the newly formed Blue Squad, consisting of energetic

6th and 7th graders. The Blue Squad held their own nicely, placing 5th in the Angels Division. Meanwhile, the Gold Squad came crashing out of the gate from the very first matchup, sweeping the first three games against St. Patrick’s and keeping that momentum

going throughout the season, for a final ranking of 2nd place in the Diocese. Saints Cyril and Methodius has participated in CMSAA programs for over six years and this year’s Volleyball Team includes 16 girls from the 6th, 7th and 8th grades, whose

practices and meets take them to a diverse range of Long Island locations. At the heart of the CMSAA’s Mission Statement is their role in helping develop well-rounded athletes, so the program’s volunteer coaches seek to promote physical endurance and

good sportsmanship, while fostering teamwork and Catholic values in all of their players. Congratulations to all of SSCM’s Volleyball players and a tremendous thanks to Mr. Peterson and Mrs. Troy for their hard work and dedication.

Bill showed me his news desk and how he updates the forecasts, films in front of a blue screen and reads off a

teleprompter. Shadowing definitely allowed me to get an insight on what I might be doing for my career and life. “I learned many things,” said Tavares. “Jose showed me the mental part of baseball, and told me that I need to learn to not listen to the critics and just be me. I was taught many physical things as well. He told me that when I get a ground ball, to have my feet moving and bring the ball to my stomach and release it quicker. This helps me because I will be better prepared for game play.” Freshman Jenna Piccinone shadowed a dermatologist, helping her finalize her decision to pursue the medical field. “This fascinating experience taught me more in-depth about dermatology,” Piccinone said. “I learned about how I should prepare for this kind of schooling, what courses I should participate in and about the everyday life of a dermatologist. I was able to witness different types of skin conditions like precancerous and cancerous moles, cysts and eczema.” Sam Canonica, also a freshman, shadowed a middle school teacher, learning about the profession and courses that would be required. While serving as a teacher’s assistant, he participated in various class activities. “Job shadowing was great,” said Canonica. “It benefited me by teaching me that this is a possible career that I may want to pursue in the future. I witnessed and participated in what goes on during a normal day. Walking in the shoes of a teacher for a day was a cool experience.”
