Kennedy Intermediate School recently came down to the district’s Robert Frost Middle School to cheer on Frost’s girls softball team. Making sure not to disappoint their fans from JFK, the team won a great game against Bay Shore that afternoon. “It is always nice to have support at our games, but the kids from the Fun Club holding their signs makes it that much better,” said coach Keri Schumacher. The goal of the Fun Club skills program is to increase opportunity for children to be socially successful in school and at places in the Deer Park community.

The Greatest Honor “I love deadlines. I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by.” ~ Douglas Adams As I sat in the audience at the recent Press Club of Long Island awards ceremony last week, intently listening to the words of one of our Hall of Fame honorees, the legendary writer and reporter Harvey Aronson, I was struck by the notion that one could choose a particular career to pursue and, so many years later {at the tender age of 89}, remain just as devoutly passionate about it. As he eloquently put it, “I wanted to be a writer… and so I became one.” The simplest sentiments are often the most poignant. In addition to his illustrious career as a groundbreaking journalist, Harvey has also devoted quite a number of

decades to the pursuit of teaching his craft to the next generation. Though I wasn’t fortunate to be enrolled in one of his classes myself, I certainly had my fair share of stellar professors through the years, some whom I reflected upon as I soaked in every word spoken by this fascinating man as he stood before the assembled crowd of media elite.

The Association for Mental Health & Wellness

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization on Long Island. They serve more than 3,000 clients each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank. This Association was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County. Those organizations are the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans. The Association for Mental Health and Wellness works vigorously to provide a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions. They run the following programs and services: The NYS-Funded Personalized RecoveryOriented Services, Health Home Care Management Services for Children and Adults, Peer Recovery Oriented Services, Supported Housing for Those Diagnosed with a Mental Illness, Mental Health Helpline, Community Health Education, Support Groups, and Behavioral Health Home and Community Based Services. They also operate an organic garden and multiple food pantries. If you or someone you know

MHAW is very excited about its 6th annual Kick Stands Up event, which will take place on Sunday, July 22nd at the Amphitheater at Bald Hill in Farmingville. Lasting from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., this motorcycle, poker run and car show will benefit at-risk and homeless veterans of the Suffolk County United Veterans Project. CAKE CREATION - Baskin Robbins recently held its first official nationwide Cake Decorating Contest. In May, Noura Adla was selected as the winner by Jason Maceda, Senior Vice-President at Baskin Robbins, out of 165 entries for her Swirls & Twirls Cone Cake design. Noura has been employed at Dunkin Donuts in North Babylon by owner Michael Imperato for the last 11 years. She studied cake decorating in NYC and hopes to pursue a career in the field.
