Little Flower Children and Family Services of New York www.littleflowerny.org
One of this organization’s oldest and largest programs is its family foster care program, which has served children and families throughout New York City and Long Island since 1952. Little Flower is committed to finding safe and nurturing homes for children and young adults that are unable to remain home with their families because they believe every child should have guidance, stability and love. Little Flower strives to meet the immediate needs of children entering foster care by partnering with dedicated foster parents who bring experience and skills in supporting children experiencing trauma. Potential foster parents undergo a thorough application and screening process, complete training, and participate in a home study before becoming a foster parent. The Little Flower team provides ongoing support and services to foster parents to ensure they can create the most nurturing environment for the foster children in their care. Additionally, Little Flower partners with foster parents and children’s families to support the children while their family receives the support and services they need to safely parent upon the child’s return from foster care. They also work with extended family to find relatives or other permanent homes for children who cannot safely return to their parents. This
For children requiring specialized care, Little Flower offers a Therapeutic Foster Boarding Home (TFBH) program based on their Wading River campus that works with children placed in foster care through Nassau or Suffolk County. Therapeutic foster parents are provided with additional training and certification to best care for the specialized needs of the foster children in their home. In addition to providing temporary care for children in a safe and nurturing environment, foster parents work closely with the organization’s social work team and the child’s parents in support of family reunification or permanency planning and ensure children are available to attend family visits. Foster parents model positive behavior, provide guidance and positive experiences, as well as support educational, dental, medical, and mental health needs of the child. Little Flower is proud to partner with such compassionate individuals willing to help children in need thrive and reach their full potential. Vivian M., a foster parent with Little Flower for more than 13 years, shared that she became a foster parent because she “loves children and wanted to make a difference.”

VALID CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and first aid certification is preferred but not necessary at time of hiring. *All certifications must be completed by the end of rookie training in order to graduate. Senior Athletes Commit To Continuing Their Sport During a May 25 recognition ceremony in the auditorium, 15 Deer Park High School studentathletes committed to continuing their sports on the college or university level this fall. District Administrator for Athletics, Physical Education, Health and Recreation Dominick Fontana congratulated the students and their parents for their perseverance. “You don’t get here without a lifetime of dedication and commitment,” Fontana said. “Continue to represent us well.” The district

will be held on Sunday June 12th promptly at 7:30AM at Suffolk Community College, Grant Campus, Brentwood, NY. The final event of the new hire procedure will take place at the West Bathhouse Ocean front at Jones Beach. Lifeguard candidates must provide their own transportation from Suffolk Community College to Jones Beach. On-site registration opens at 7am & the test will start at 7:30am. The exam consists of 100-yard timed swim, 50 yard cross chest carry, ¾ mile run and 350-400-yard timed ocean swim. You must bring sneakers! All components are timed and scored based on your finished time. Results of Sunday mornings exams will be announced, and a rookie draft will take place over zoom on Monday, June 13th, 2022 9am. A link will be emailed to all candidates who
successfully completed both portions of Sunday morning’s exam. Those candidates who successful accept positions on Sunday, will be required to attend 5 paid days/40 hours of Jones Beach Lifeguard Rookie Training beginning on Saturday, June 18 through Wednesday, June 22nd. 16th Annual Top Cop Night On Thursday, May 19th, 2022, Our Lady of the Rosary Council No. 4428 Knights of Columbus in Deer Park held it’s 16th annual Top Cop Night honoring a Suffolk County First Precinct Police Officer. This years honoree was Police Officer Aleksandra KlimasMikalauskas. Officer KlimasMikalauskas has been a Suffolk County Police Officer since 2017 and primarily assigned to uniform patrol in the Deer Park area. As a member of the Medical Crisis Action Team (MEDCAT) since June of 2019, she is often called to respond
to other areas within the precinct and beyond. She is a member of the North Babylon Volunteer Fire Company since 2006, having served as a Captain from 2017-2019. Officer KlimasMikalauskas has responded to critical incidents too numerous times too mention, however some are worth noting: She revived an elderly man who fell into the water at a Lindenhurst Marina. She revived a 5th precinct officer who went into cardiac arrest while responding to a possible burglary. She initiated critical care to a victim of a mass

shooting at a Copaigue deli wherein two other victims did not survive. She saved a North Amityville stabbing victim by performing a needle decompression to reinflate his punctured lung. As a member of MEDCAT she assisted with administering over 20,000 COVID vaccines. Police Officer Aleksandra Klimas-Mikalauskas is well regarded in the Police Department and Fire Company she serves. The Knights of Columbus was proud to honor her and to let residents of the community know she is protecting our neighborhoods.

The 80th anniversary of the iconic Sherman tank that spearheaded America’s liberation of Europe will be the featured armor vehicle during this year’s World War II Encampment Weekend at the Museum of American Armor inside Old Bethpage Village Restoration, 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage, Long Island, on Saturday June 11 and Sunday June 12, between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The Armor Museum has put out an “All Points Bulletin” for Sherman tank veterans to join the Armor Museum in observing the milestone anniversary and participating in an oral histories project that memorializes their experiences. In addition to the Sherman, the weekend will feature military reenactments presented by the Long Island Living History Association (LILHA) and a parade of operational armor vehicles that comprise the museum’s extensive collection. The environmental benefits of recycling are well documented and by themselves warrant a more sustainable lifestyle. With information gathered by the Recycling Economic Information Project (REI), an organization created in 2001 to encourage the development of an economic market for recycling and supported by the EPA, it is proven beyond a doubt that recycling not only conserves natural resources but recycling also strengthens our economy by creating jobs, wages and creating tax revenue. A 2020 REI report showed the recycling industry (including glass, paper,
plastics, rubber, electronics, organic and construction and demolition materials) across the board created 681,000 jobs, $37.8 billion in wages, and $5.5 billion in tax revenue. Furthermore, on average… 1.17 jobs were created for every 1000 tons of recycled materials. Rising above the rest by comparison, with 270 employees, HELPSY is the largest clothing collection company on the East Coast and collects 15,000 tons of textiles every year… amounting to 18 jobs for every 1000 tons. “HELPSY’s environmental mission is to radically change the way people think about clothing reuse and recycling. In the process of serving this mission, it has created hundreds of living wage jobs, saved municipalities millions of dollars in disposal fees, and has reduced the enormous
environmental burden of the second most polluting industry in the world,” says Dan Green, Co-Founder and CEO of HELPSY. Over the past year, HELPSY has worked with 113 municipal recycling departments and collected approximately 1.7 million pounds of textiles from those collaborations.
