BROADWAY COMES TO BABYLON: The Argyle Theatre

For several years, the movie theater on Main Street in Babylon Village sat with its glasspaned doors papered over with posters from its final showings, grimly pinpointing the exact moment in time those doors had shut. Last month, those posters came down, and the doors opened to Long Island’s newest and largest year-round professional equity theatre, bringing new light and color to the classic streets of Babylon Village as the stunning Argyle Theatre. Operating in a town full of old New York charm like Babylon, Mark and Dylan Perlman, the father/son owners of the venue, could think of no better show with which to kick
off their inaugural season than Guys and Dolls, sponsored by Forerunner Technologies, Inc. The classic musical by Loesser, Swerling & Burrows builds highstakes tension and love between the high-stakes gamblers and other colorful characters created by New York writer Damon Runyon. As the show opens with the song named in tribute, Runyonland, the lights come up on a truly entertaining evening of song and dance. In this production, the Argyle has built a true gem. With the stage filled with thousands of light bulbs, the only thing that shines brighter than the scenery - which mimics the streets of old Broadway - are the performances of their professional actors pulled fresh from the streets of NEW Broadway. Getting to this point was no mean feat for the Perlman family, who have put several millions of dollars and countless late-evening hours into the project. But if you talk to them, their passion for and commitment to the performing arts is infectious, which no doubt contributed to their ability to surround themselves with a hardworking team of
seasoned professionals both for their in-house Argyle keeps moving east through Europe for staff, and for the production teams hired for Spring Awakening, catching a glimpse into the torments and explorations of youth in their individual productions. Eagle Scout Honors Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly recently joined the family, friends and fellow troop members of Deer Park resident and student David J. Russell to witness, honor and recognize him for earning the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout, the highest-recognized achievement bestowed by the Boy Scouts of America to its members. Mr. Russell’s Court of Honor was held at the Deer Park Firehouse on April 28th where he received many accolades for his distinction, including a Proclamation from Legislator Donnelly. Putting in a total of 184 hours, Mr. Russell created and beautified two planting sites, uprooted weeds and
cleaned debris around the perimeter of May Moore Primary School, to earn Eagle Scout recognition. Throughout his Boy Scout career, Mr. Russell has assisted many fellow Boy Scouts in completing their own Eagle Scout projects. In addition, he has shown himself to be a tireless community volunteer, working as an Assistant Coach for the Deer Park Soccer Club and Catholic Youth Organization; Camp Counselor for the Ascension Lutheran Church Vacation Bible School; volunteering for the Deer Park Community Center and Constantino Brumidi Lodge; organizing food drives and cleanups; participating in the New York City Veterans Parade,
the Deer Park Lion’s Club Pancake Breakfast, and the Deer Park Fire Department September 11th Remembrance Ceremony; placing flags at Veteran’s gravesites; and, assisting the residents at Our Lady of Consolation Nursing & Rehabilitation Care Center. “David Russell has done more community service in just a few years than most people do in a lifetime,” said Legislator Donnelly. “He has shown leadership, character and a true commitment to community. I know his family is rightfully very proud of him and it is an honor to join them in honoring and thanking him for all that he has done, and I know will continue to do, for the community.”
Celebrating Poetry Month On April 27th, Deer Park held its fourth annual International Poetry Festival, a multicultural celebration of National Poetry Month. Performing poets came from all five of Deer Park’s schools, originate from countries all over the globe and speak a multitude of languages. Students recited poetry in multiple
languages, sang songs demonstrating poetic rhythm and performed dances representing various cultures. “We hold this festival each year, as we have such a wonderfully diverse group of students in our programs,” said Ashley Rosenberg, district administrator for ENL and world languages. “Deer
Park celebrates Poetry Month by integrating poetry instruction into curriculum districtwide. Our department places a particular emphasis on poetry because we strive for our students to practice language and deepen their understanding of culture through poetry, song and dance.”

Jumping into June Another month has come and gone, and here we are, hurtling toward “summer” through the rain and fog of spring. The school year is drawing to a close, vacation plans are in the works, and everyone seems in desperate need of some sort of reprieve from the daily grind. I recently took a vacation day to bookend the Memorial Day weekend, creating a four-day spread of time to decompress and reset. My mission was to fill every moment with something either enjoyable or productive, a noble pursuit if ever there was one, however unrealistic it might be. The trouble with sustaining that type of schedule, even when it revolves around leisure activities, is the inevitable downward spiral into exhaustion. Being productive is hard work. And with that, the many lists of things to accomplish, some
carried over from just prior to the new year, remain. Sure, a few items have made their way into the “done” column; but mostly, the main bullet points stare back from the page, some expanded upon and added to as the months have progressed. The fact is, there is always more work to be done, always some aspect of life to improve upon, an avenue of growth to explore. Summer, for all its heat and humidity, has always been the season for such exploration to me, in the most literal of senses. From long walks into the uninhabited neighborhoods of Fire Island, to stumbling upon tiny treasures of sand and foliage along the shores that we call home, searching for that perfect photo op, that moment of tranquility when nature takes over and responsibilities vanish into the haze. The key, of course, is to take a piece - however small a slice - of that feeling, that
incomparable moment of zen, and carry it with you into the other elements of life. Find the beauty in everything, as they say. A flower, a butterfly, a sunrise, the ocean crashing along the shore… Perhaps we should dispense with our lists altogether. Who says what is written is more important than what is not? Maybe those “tasks” we have yet to document are the most crucial of all. It might just follow that all these selfimposed responsibilities do not hold nearly the significance we place on them. Those who appear to embody the greatest inner peace seem to glide through life without a care in the world - and what’s wrong with that? And so, we begin yet another month, a bit older and hopefully wiser as we set sail into summer. May the warmth of the sun radiate upon you. Eventually. Maybe by July.

The Association for Mental Health & Wellness
The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization here on Long Island. They serve more than 3,000 clients each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank. This Association was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County. Those organizations are the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans. The Association for Mental Health and Wellness works vigorously to provide a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions. They run the following programs and services: The NYS-Funded Personalized RecoveryOriented Services, Health Home Care Management Services for Children and Adults, Peer Recovery Oriented Services, Supported Housing for Those Diagnosed with a Mental Illness, Mental Health Helpline, Community Health Education, Support Groups and Behavioral Health Home and Community Based Services. They also operate an organic garden and multiple food pantries! If you or someone you know is struggling with a mental health issue, don’t hesitate to contact this nonprofit that believes mental health is

They strive to ensure that all their local needs and voices are not only heard, but also recognized by government leaders, the business community, advocacy groups and educational organizations in our region! The Garden consists of 23 raised beds of organically grown veggies and herbs, as well as berry bushes, grape vines and more. The produce from their Garden provides lunches for the adults in their programs and helps them stock Charlotte’s Table Food Pantry, which offers community members in need fresh and healthy options. Healthy Never Tasted So Good! All I know is that dining out and choosing to be healthy have usually been difficult. The pressure of finding a good option and ultimately settling for something familiar has happened far too often. I enjoy eating my homemade Lean & Green meal (3 servings of vegetables and 5-7 ounces of a lean protein), but trying to find that type of meal while dining out has been challenging. Most fast food restaurants focus on convenience and not nutrition. Nutrition is key to living a healthy lifestyle, and it’s something that I have changed significantly since losing 110 lbs. The fast food business is evolving, and more healthy choices are starting to become available. I had the
pleasure of dining at a recently opened restaurant, CoreLife Eatery in Farmingdale, last week. They are focused on offering only the best foods and preparing them fresh on the spot. So many options to choose from - green bowls, grain bowls, broth bowls, freshly made beverages... the portions are hearty and satiating. You are able to make your own bowl or plate, choosing whichever fresh ingredients you prefer; you can also choose one of their creations from the menu, which can be customized as well. This place really appeals to me. I can choose all the components of my meal, and I know they are fresh, nutrientdense ingredients, perfect for my needs. For my dining choice, I

chose the Tuna Poke Fire Bowl. It comes with Ahi tuna poke, avocado, pickled jalapeños, pickled red onions, pickled red cabbage, sesame Sriracha sprouts and forbidden purple rice ( I opted for romaine and spinach instead of the rice). I topped this meal with the suggested fire sauce and sesame ginger dressing. If you like heat, I highly recommend the fire sauce; it had an incredible flavor, as well as a nice touch of spice. It was an extremely tasty dish that left me satisfied. I really am looking forward to my next meal at CoreLife Eatery. It truly is the next step in the evolution of dining. The Mermaid Parade is a unique and artistic celebration of ancient mythology and the honkytonk seaside ritual that
attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to the amusement district. The parade features marching bands, drill teams, floats, antique cars and some 1,500 participants dressed in hand-made costume of mermaids, sea creatures, amusement rides and Neptunes. It is the largest art parade in the nation and the largest event of the year in Coney Island. The o-fish-al beer of the Parade will be flowing
all day. Mermaid Pilsner will be available straight from the source at Coney Island Brewery, and at bars and restaurants throughout the Coney Island neighborhood! “We are very excited to have Amanda Palmer & Neil Gaiman lead the parade, as this years Queen Mermaid & King Neptune” Parade and Coney Island USA Founder Dick Zigun said. “And, we are thrilled to have our good friends at

This event is intended for ages 15 years and up. The second event is a presentation for all ages. “My Life as an Astronaut,” will be held Friday, June 29th, at 2 p.m. Would you like to meet an astronaut, find out how to become one, learn what it’s like to work for NASA? Even if you’re just curious about all things related to astronomy and space, come meet the Bresniks at this family-friendly event. Col. Bresnik will share his experiences in space, answer questions, and provide
orbits of the Earth and traveling 58,835,163 miles. "The Bresniks are both remarkable people,” said Terry Bienstock, President of Montauk Observatory. “Their personal stories and their accomplishments are inspiring. We are thrilled to be joined by our co-sponsors in bringing the Bresniks to our community for these informative programs. The opportunity for our residents and their kids to spend time with Randy and Rebecca will be something we will remember for the rest of our lives." At the first lecture, “Space Exploration,” scheduled for Wednesday, June 27th, at 8 p.m., the audience will have a rare opportunity to learn about space from the insiders: what it's like to live and work in space,
an opportunity to take a photo or get an autograph. Intended for younger audiences, this is a great chance for kids to meet and be inspired by a real, live astronaut.
