Deer Park High School’s Class of 2021 valedictorian and salutatorian are Jasleen Kaur and Matthew Heinen, respectively. Kaur, who serves as president of Deer Park’s Red Cross Club, earned a perfect score on the ACT. As a member of DECA, she is a four-time state award winner and four-time international competitor, and was elected president of New York State DECA. She is a member of the school’s varsity girls soccer and track teams, and also interned on Jackie Gordon’s congressional campaign. Kaur will attend Harvard University, majoring in physics.

Spirit’s Promise Equine Rescue is offering Summer Clinics every week from Monday, June 28 through Monday, August 30. During the clinic children will learn the ins and outs of a working horse rescue and will help groom, feed and care for the horses and other animals on the farm. Cost is $45 per day for members or $65 for non-members. The clinics will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for children in grades 1 – 7. A “Leader in Training” program is available for grades 8

National Fire Protection Association Says Use Caution When Using Grills According to the National Fire Protection Association, roughly half of the injuries involving grills are thermal burns. Of the approximately 16,600 patients who visit emergency rooms for injuries involving grills each year, 8,200 are treated for thermal burns. UPMC HealthBeat notes that thermal burns typically occur when a person touches flames or fire or hot molten liquid or steam. Thermal burns also can result when touching a hot object, such as cooking pans, irons or heated

appliances. WebMD advises burn sufferers to call 911 immediately if the burn penetrates all layers of the skin; if the skin appears leathery or charred, with white, brown or black patches; or if the hands, feet, face, or genitals are burned. In addition, call 911 immediately if infants or seniors suffer any burns, even if the burn does not appear severe. Treatment will depend on the severity and location of the burn. In the immediate aftermath of a thermal burn, Stanford Children’s Health advises cooling the

affected area with cold water or a cold compress until the pain is reduced or alleviated. Avoid breaking any blisters that form, and protect the burn with a dry, sterile gauze bandage or with a clean bed sheet or cloth. Do not attempt to remove clothing that is stuck to the burned area. In such instances, cut around the clothing and leave the burn intact. Resist any temptation to apply ointments, oils or sprays to the burned area, as these should only be applied when prescribed by a doctor.

Orchestra students at Deer Park’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School recently presented a virtual spring concert, directed by Kathryn Attard and artist-in-residence Bradley Bosenbeck. The

performances included “Beauty and the Beast,” arranged by Bosenbeck for the select chamber group. “We are so proud of all the students, they have really excelled during these uncertain

times,” said Bradley Murphy, the district’s fine and performing arts administrator. “We would like to thank Mr. Bosenbeck for all his help and wish everyone a safe and healthy summer.”

Alleykattz is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that operates on volunteers alone. The organization was formed in 2016 by Sonnia Cepeda. They service all of Long Island, New York City Metro and the surrounding areas. Their mission of rescuing abandoned and homeless cats, as well as cats in danger of abuse and neglect. Alleykatz has a strict

adoption policy to ensure cats and kittens get the best homes. Adoption application and a home visit are required before placement of a cat into a home. They believe that there is a good home for every cat they rescue and even though it might take a little longer for some to find their “furever” home, it is worth the wait if they end up in a happy home that suits them. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a nonprofit organization with a rich history. You may know and love their farm, or you may never believe there is an 11-acre farm in Centereach that has been feeding Long Islanders for decades! The James Hobbs family came to Long Island from Georgia in 1906 and grew farm produce in New Village (North Centereach) for local Long Islanders for 3 generations, first as farm workers and later purchasing the land, which became known as Hobbs Farm. James’ son, Alfred Hobbs took ownership in 1955 and farmed his own property, as well as rental farmland in the surrounding area for many years. He passed up many opportunities to sell the property, hoping that it would always remain a farm. Thankfully, it does remain a farm to this day. Hobbs Farm is the last farm in Centereach, as well as the last AfricanAmerican family farm on Long Island. When Mr. Hobbs passed away in 1996, he left the farm property to the Bethel AME Church in Setauket, where he was a member. The farm was renamed Bethel Hobbs Community Farm. However, the church struggled with local community organizations that were threatening to buyout the land for other means. In 2007, “Friends of Hobbs Farm” was formed, which led to the restoration process of the farm. Today, the church still owns the farm, a non-profit organization that is entirely operated by volunteers. The farm is 11 acres and it grows and harvests an average of over 30,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to several local food pantries and soup kitchens on the island. They also offer CSA Memberships, which allows locals to receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown on their farm right in Centereach. The produced is packed the same day as they go out for delivery, and recipiants can rest knowing exactly where they were grown. Additionally, the farm offers educational programs, community events and they have a seasonal farm stand. With a strong faith-based history and being that it is still owned by a local church, you will notice a strong Christian presence as soon as you walk onto their land. Faith based signs, a large wooden cross and a welcoming peaceful environment truly

makes this farm special. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has 6 distinct areas: The Memorial Garden: The Memorial Garden is at the front tip of their property. It is a quiet, shaded area with flowers, beautiful greenery and a peaceful waterfall to remember people who have passed on. The Education Garden: The Education Garden area grows many heirloom varieties, has a small compost area and hosts educational events for small groups. The Greenhouse: The Greenhouse allows this farm to extend their season during the colder months. The Community Garden: The Community Garden hosts Brookhaven Community garden plots. The Garden of Ephraim: The Garden of Ephraim is a wheelchair accessible garden, which consists of a beautiful paved area with raised beds! There is also street access directly into The Garden of Ephraim. Food Pantry Donation Area: This area of the farm consists of several acres of farm land and is the main growing area. The selfless efforts of all the volunteers that work hard to keep this farm afloat is truly a blessing. They don’t get paid a dime, but they love what they do. To me, this farm shines bright as a symbol of hope and resilience. However, it needs some more help itself.
