Drive-thru Shed the Meds Event Why does NY State have such restrictive guidelines for animal hospitals?
We enjoy having you there too.
The NY State government has put detailed guidelines in place for all businesses, not just veterinarians. For example, medical facilities are required to screen patients before admitting them into the facility.
However right now we are required to follow guidelines issued by New York State that state “Curbside intake and pickup of animals should be used, wherever practical, to minimize the numbers of clients in waiting areas and exam rooms.”* Although that creates a lot of extra work for our staff, we are committed to complying with the NY State safety guidelines during the COVID-19 crisis, and to protect our client’s health and safety. *Exceptions can be made in situations like euthanasia
Are these still necessary? Restrictions are lifted on other things. By July 2020, restrictions like curbside check-in have helped reduce the number of people diagnosed with COVID-19 in New York State down from over 10,000 a day to below 1,000. At the same time we have seen infections rise dramatically in other states who had fewer restrictions.

Beautification Day Brings Students Together

A sunny day and beautiful temperatures brought Wyandanch Memorial High School students outside to plant marigolds, hostas and more in the flower beds at the entrance of the high school for its annual Beautification Day. Led by the high school’s life skills classes, students from the Kappa League, Future Leaders, One World, the Honor Society, JROTC and the track team joined in and picked up their shovels to plant for the growing season. High School Principal Mr. Paul Sibblies, along with Life Skills teachers Ms. Beverly Harper-Lewis and Ms. Evette James, worked to organize the
event with plant donations, gardening tools, mulch and other necessary items for gardening. In addition, several high school teachers who have a passion for gardening joined the student clubs and teams to beautify the beds. “Beautification Day is an important event for us,” Mr. Sibblies said. “I don’t think we’ve ever had this many groups or students participating, and we are so excited to have them here to learn about planting, the importance of teamwork and to give them a great sense of accomplishment once completed and sense of pride in the weeks following as the plants and
flowers begin to grow and flourish.” In addition, Ms. HarperLewis has been working to expand Beautification Day from flowers and plants to include a vegetable garden which the Life Skills class aims to develop into an ongoing gardening program as part of the life skill curriculum. The school has applied for a grant from the Whole Kids Foundation to help fund the garden and, if awarded the grant, students will be provided with the necessary tools to further develop and sustain their school garden as well as consume the vegetables in meal prep lessons.
From Compost To Volcanoes Earth Day brought a dizzying array of exciting activities for the students of Deer Park’s John Quincy Adams Primary School to explore. First graders in Brittany Kappenmacher and Margaret Simon’s class learned about compost and sorted materials that can be used to make
compost. They then made their own edible chocolate “compost” consisting of layers of chocolate pudding (soil), marshmallows (greens), chocolate chips (browns), sprinkles (greens) and oreos (browns). Kindergartners in Annette Armenti and Susan Ricciardelli’s class planted flowers; Erica Fulgenzi’s first

This program assists in the development of a life plan with short and long term goals. It also promotes the development of interpersonal skills. The length of stay varies based on need, averaging 12-18 months. Each person is treated individually by professional clinical staff. Montfort Therapeutic Residences: This is an intensive therapeutic treatment facility for children ages 11-18 who find themselves caught in the family court system. These children come to them at a time of great crisis in their young lives. Montfort Therapeutic provides the young residents with a healthy, stable environment, a school program, individual counseling, group dynamics and educational recreational outings. The program also includes aftercare services for children returning home. Pax Christi: This emergency shelter offers guests who are homeless a safe alternative to the streets. Pax Christi offers case management, drug and alcohol counseling, mental health counseling, linkages to benefits and resources in the community, as well as the basics of food and shelter. Over 50 active volunteers assist with cleaning, making beds, painting, serving meals and providing food and clothing for guests. HHM is truly a selfless and heartwarming non-profit right here on Long Island. No one should ever feel that they need to suffer alone, that they are not being heard, that they can’t ask for help or that they are hopeless. Rather than driving the family to a nearby ice cream stand, walk or bike there instead. Run as many errands on foot or on a bicycle as possible. Walking or cycling is a great way to get some time outdoors on warm summer days, and reducing fuel consumption is an equally great way to help the planet.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, roughly half of the injuries involving grills are thermal burns. Of the approximately 16,600 patients who visit emergency rooms for injuries involving grills each year, 8,200 are treated for thermal

burns. UPMC HealthBeat notes that thermal burns typically occur when a person touches flames or fire or hot molten liquid or steam. Thermal burns also can result when touching a hot object, such as cooking pans, irons or heated appliances. WebMD
advises burn sufferers to call 911 immediately if the burn penetrates all layers of the skin; if the skin appears leathery or charred, with white, brown or black patches; or if the hands, feet, face, or genitals are burned. In addition, call 911 immediately if infants or
seniors suffer any burns, even if the burn does not appear severe. Treatment will depend on the severity and location of the burn. In the immediate aftermath of a thermal burn, Stanford Children’s Health advises cooling the affected area with cold water or a cold
compress until the pain is reduced or alleviated. Avoid breaking any blisters that form, and protect the burn with a dry, sterile gauze bandage or with a clean bed sheet or cloth. Do not attempt to remove clothing that is stuck to the burned area. In such
instances, cut around the clothing and leave the burn intact. Resist any temptation to apply ointments, oils or sprays to the burned area, as these should only be applied when prescribed by a doctor.

Legislator Tom Donnelly Honors Boy Scout Troop 86

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) recently honored Deer Park High School student Steven Mendell and his fellow members of Deer Park Boy Scout Troop 86 for their work in assisting veterans facing food insecurity. For his Eagle Scout project, Steven Mendell researched and decided
to assist the organization “Cooking for Long Island Vets.” Engaging his fellow members in this initiative, he set up food donation boxes at Deer Park High School, held a food drive outside of ShopRite in Deer Park and planned a car wash at JFK Intermediate School where patrons could trade food to be donated for the service. Legislator Donnelly
honored all of them for their work at the Troop’s first meeting in May. “I salute Steven and the boy scouts of Troop 86 for their noble effort in assisting an organization that serves those who served,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I thank all those involved in this collaborative effort. It goes a long way in making a difference.”
Local Non-Profit Is In Need Of Foster Homes For Cats! Alleykattz is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that operates on volunteers alone. The organization was formed in 2016 by Sonnia Cepeda. They service all of Long Island, New York City Metro and the surrounding areas. Their mission of rescuing abandoned and homeless cats, as well as cats in danger of abuse and neglect. Alleykatz has a strict
adoption policy to ensure cats and kittens get the best homes. Adoption application and a home visit are required before placement of a cat into a home. They believe that there is a good home for every cat they rescue and even though it might take a little longer for some to find their “furever” home, it is worth the wait if they end up in a happy home that suits them. Every cat is in foster care until the
right home is found and Alleykattz is currently in need of foster homes (preferably close to Long Island). Interesting Facts About Memorial Day Each year on the last Monday of May, Americans celebrate Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a federal holiday that honors and mourns American military personnel who died while performing their duties in service to the United States Armed Forces. Memorial Day has a rich history and one that’s worth revisiting as the nation prepares to honor the sacrifices made by its military personnel over the centuries. · Freed slaves played a role in the establishment of Memorial Day. The American Civil War is the deadliest military conflict in American history, as the Union and the Confederacy each suffered more than 800,000 casualties by the time the war ended in 1865. According to History.com, as the war drew to a close, hundreds of Union soldiers who were
being held as prisoners of war died and were buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp in South Carolina. After the Confederate surrender, more than 1,000 nowfreed slaves honored those recently deceased Union soldiers during a ceremony in which they sang hymns and distributed flowers. The ceremony was dedicated to the fallen soldiers and served as a precursor to what is now celebrated as Memorial Day. · Confederate soldiers were honored, too. Confederate losses during the Civil War outnumbered Union losses, and those losses were not forgotten by southerners who survived the war. History.com notes that, in 1866, the Georgiabased Ladies Memorial Association, one of many similar organizations to arise in the aftermath of
the war, pushed for a day to honor fallen Confederate soldiers. In fact, these efforts are believed to have influenced General John A. Logan. In 1868, General Logan, a Civil War veteran who was then serving as commander-in-chief of a group of Union veterans, ordered the decoration of Union graves with flowers on May 30. The day would ultimately be known as “Memorial Day.” · It took a long time for Memorial Day to become a federal holiday. Despite tracing its origins to the immediate aftermath of the Civil War, Memorial Day did not become an official federal holiday until 1971, more than a century after the war ended. This is the same year the holiday was officially designated as taking place on the last Monday in May. The designation has periodically drawn the ire
of veterans and military supporters who suggest it is now more widely seen as the unofficial beginning to summer and not a day in which the sacrifices
