Here’s a little ditty I’m compelled to write today, Extrolling the wonderous wonders surging towards us, Finally here – the month of May. While the calendar may technically still say spring for almost another month, the approach of Memorial Day weekend signals summer on the horizon. As thousands of Long Islanders head to the beach to enjoy the sun, surf and sand, we reflect on the first five months of the year… how has your 2016 been so far? Is it headed in the right direction? Are there still goals left to attain? What

does the remainder of the year hold in store? Of course, we can only predict so much, direct our fate to a degree; but, with that, our actions – or inaction, as the case may be – are what set the precedence for how our days will unfold. A little positive momentum goes a long way in determining the course of weeks, months, even entire years. One small step in the right direction is all it takes to turn things around. And with that, spring is the perfect time to look forward, that season of rebirth and growth, of blossoming flowers and greening grass, of eggs hatching and bunnies

Deer Park High School seniors Ayinde Briggs, Victoria Major and Adam Zimmerman signed National Letters of Intent on May 16th to continue their athletic careers in college next fall. They were congratulated by their proud families and Athletic Director Dominick Fontana. Major will join the track team at Adelphi University in Garden City, where she plans to study social work and education. “The location was important, because I wanted to be close to my family,” Major said regarding her choice of Adelphi, also citing

the school’s educational merits. Deer Park’s indomitable team captain, Major won the Suffolk County and Long Island high jump championships this year, and finished fourth in the state en route to an AllLeague and All-County season. Zimmerman will attend Webber International University in Babson Park, Florida on a bowling scholarship. He will major in sports management. “Webber was the school I thought I’d fit in the best with, and their bowling program is awesome,” Zimmerman said. Z i m m e r m a n ’ s

remarkable career at Deer Park includes four state titles. This year, he won the high school singles championship at the Suffolk County Singles Doubles Tournament and Suffolk County and bowled 300 games on 10 occasions. Briggs will play football at Malone University in Canton, Ohio this fall, where he plans to major in nursing. “I liked the vibe of the campus, and the way they treat their players,” he said about his selection of Malone. An All-County athlete, Briggs was MVP of the Falcons this season.

Relief Effort

The Town of Babylon has spent the last two weeks collecting emergency supplies to be sent down to Ecuador to aid in the country’s recovery from a devastating earthquake. To date, the 7.8 magnitude earthquake has caused over 600 deaths, more than 12,000 injuries, and nearly 200,000 citizens are now homeless. Recalling the charitable help that the Town received

following Superstorm Sandy, Councilman Tom Donnelly and Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez have spearheaded this effort as a way to “pay it forward.” The Town has been in contact with the Quito Fire Department, one of the organizations leading the relief effort in Ecuador. Thanks to the generosity of its residents, the Town collected more than a

dozen large boxes of nonperishable food items, gloves, elbow and knee pads, flashlights, and blankets. Top Performance Seventeen Long Island boys and girls teams competed at Deer Park High School’s third annual co-ed Deer Park Falcons Track Invitational, hosted on May 14th. Notable performances for Deer Park’s boys team included Nick Fenton, who won the 1,600-meter race, and senior Joe Curry, who finished third overall in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles. Both the 4x800meter and 4x400-meter relay teams earned second place. For the girls team, captain Victoria Major

won the high jump, Lynne Gbadamosi won the shot put throw, Anna Ranni won the 1,500-meter race walk, Ariel McDermott came in second in the 1,500-meter run and the 4x800-meter relay team finished second overall. Daniel Claxton of Smithtown East jumped 6 feet 10 inches in the high jump, the best high jump in New York State for the entire spring 2016 season. “Both the boys and girls track teams made Deer Park proud today, not only in the way they peformed, but also in the way they

represented themselves as the host program,” said Tom Brouillard, boys track and field coach. “Many Deer Park runners had season-best performances. This was complimented by some of the best competition in the state, as we saw with Daniel Claxton of Smithtown East in the high jump, for example. I am confident my girls team counterpart Jim Petti would agree that this was the most successful installment of our invitational yet.”

Deer Park honored outstanding student talent at the district’s annual fine and performing arts awards ceremony, held at the high school auditorium during the Board of Education meeting on April 19th. As their proud families watched, Bradley Murphy, the district’s curriculum associate for fine and performing arts, and Superintendent Eva J. Demyen presented the attending artists and performers with certificates and congratulations. The musicians recognized included Joseph DeNoyior (NYSCAME AllCounty, All-State Mixed Chorus), Rebecca Fox (LISFA, SCMEA All-County Ensemble), Gianna Giffone (LISFA), Kalvin Guyer (NYSCAME All-County, All-State Orchestra, LISFA), Alaina Lin (LISFA, SCMEA Recorder Day), Jacie Matera (NYSCAME All-County), Ryder Min (LISFA, SCMEA Recorder Day), Michael Strenta (NYSCAME All-County, SCMEA All-County Jazz Ensemble), Catherine Wilkonski (LISFA) and Alec Winters (NYSCAME All-County, All-State Mixed Chorus).
