Alzheimer’s Caregiver Tips Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease can be stressful, and for those who are new to caregiving, it can also feel overwhelming. To help families cope with the challenges of dementia caregiving, the Alzheimer’s Association is teaming up with the Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation to share helpful tips.

On May 20, the two organizations will host “Play by Play: Creating Care Plans,” a virtual program on combating caregiver stress and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. “A plan can make a real difference for anyone involved in caregiving,” said Kate Anastasia, director of programs at the Alzheimer’s

Association. “Every team needs a playbook to succeed, and the same is true of caregiving teams. Team members can often ignore their own needs, leading to stress and potentially health problems. Every good caregiving plan includes both the person with Alzheimer’s or dementia and the people providing care.”

The Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation was founded in honor of former University of Arkansas football coach and athletic director Frank Broyles and his wife, Barbara, who both had Alzheimer’s disease. In 2006, Coach Broyles penned “Coach Broyles’ Playbook for Alzheimer’s Caregivers,” which offers strategies and goal-

oriented advice for those caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s. Those who attend the free program will receive a free copy of Broyles’ book. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, there are more than 6 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease and more than 11 million family members caring for them. In New

York alone, there are 410,000 people battling the disease and 586,000 caregivers. “Play by Play: Creating Care Plans” will begin at 2 p.m. EDT on Thursday, May 20. The program is free to attend. Is It Safe To Donate Blood During The Pandemic? Donating blood is a selﬂess act that saves lives. Blood donors may recognize the vital role they play in patient care, but many may wonder if it’s safe to donate blood during

the pandemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is safe for anyone who is well to donate blood. That even goes for people who are social distancing due

to COVID-19. The CDC has recommended various safety measures to ensure the safety of donors and donation center volunteers and staff members. Such measures include spacing

donor chairs at least six feet apart and encouraging donors to make donation appointments ahead of time. Appointments can ensure donors are not spending more time at the donation

center than is absolutely necessary, reducing the likelihood that they have contact with someone who may have COVID-19 but not know it. The Red Cross notes it has instituted

additional safety protocols, such as laundering blankets used by donors after each use and requiring all donors and staff to wear face coverings or masks during the donation process.

Life’s WORC’s Family Center for Autism Announces Scholarship Program Life’s WORC (www. lifesworc.org), a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism through its residential, community and trust services, which this year is celebrating its 50th anniversary – Celebrate 50! - wants Long Island, Queens and Manhattan residents to know that its Family Center for Autism in Garden City, NY offers scholarships to help those who are financiallychallenged to gain access to its wide range of programs. In addition to its services, which include Behavioral Analysis Services, Family Support Services, and School-based Services, the Center offers art camps, sports and fitness, music

and movement, scient and tech, salon and spa, and vocational programs. Life’s WORC Family Center for Autism’s Senior Director Nicky Faranda noted that, “Through the generosity of private donors, we are able to offer those in need scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,500 to pay for any of our program classes. To date, we have raised almost $200,000 which has enabled children through adults to participate in programs designed to build skills in specific areas, while encouraging socialization, recreation and the development of valuable life skills.” To date, the Life’s WORC Family Center for Autism has awarded over 239 scholarships valued at $245,589 for

The scholarship program, which was first introduced in 2015, was created when it became clear that there were many in the community who simply did not have the additional financial resources to pay for the Center’s programs despite the fees being kept to a minimum. They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal financial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations. Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility. There are so many ways that this non-profit can truly help you get your life on a better track. Additionally, there are plenty of ways for people to get involved in helping others through volunteering. Over the past 40 years, thousands of people have donated their time and talent to help this organization reach those in need.
