Application Available Long Island Music Hall of Fame (LIMHoF) is proud to announce that it is officially accepting applications for its 2017 LIMHoF Scholarship Program. Each year, LIMHoF grants thousands of dollars in music scholarships to students who are graduating from high school in Long Island, Brooklyn and/or Queens, and who have shown an interest in pursuing a career in music. This year, four $500 scholarships will be awarded to qualifying students. “Long Island Music Hall of Fame is honored to have the opportunity to once again assist in supporting the education of those students who are pursuing a future in music,” said LIMHoF Education Chairman, Tom Needham. “Our board members are dedicated mentors to young, upcoming artists and we are proud to offer scholarships to aid in furthering their music education.” Eligibility Criteria: • Graduating high school senior from Long Island, Brooklyn or Queens. • Minimum GPA of 2.5. • Accepted full-time at an accredited college or university. • Demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in music. • Financial need. • U. S. citizen or legal resident with I-55 permanent residency. • Completion of online application form that includes essay, high school transcript and letter of recommendation. Since 2010, $10,000 in scholarships have been awarded to selected members of the Gemini Youth Orchestra of Melville, Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of Manhasset, and Children’s Orchestra Society of Queens. Students seeking funding are encouraged to download and complete the designated LIMHoF Student Scholarship Application by May 30th, 2017. Each application will be carefully reviewed by the LIMHoF Education Committee.

Special Students Honored Honored for their outstanding conduct, character and compassion, in the classroom and in the community, seventeen special students from Deer Park High School were recognized by teachers and administrators at the spring Breakfast for Champions ceremony, held April 20th in the school library. Student champions are selected in fall and spring by each of the school’s departments, along with

additional champions chosen by the principal and a teacher. Joined by their families, they received plaques after being lauded by their sponsors. I recently had the opportunity to attend a journalism forum at The Paley Center for Media in Manhattan. Titled “The Future of Local News: Trust, Truth & The Bottom Line,” this summit brought together some of the best and the brightest in the industry to discuss what many have summarily dismissed as a dying field. I am happy to report that, after listening to several engaging panels touching on everything from politics to nonprofit upstarts to the pros and cons of social media in the information age, I came away with an even deeper sense of confidence that journalism is, in fact, here to stay. Sure, the fourth estate may have hit some bumps in the road of late; but, in essence, these

obstacles have only helped those truly reputable media outlets to gain a stronger foothold. Too much of anything is a bad thing; this is a commonly held opinion. But, to be able to harness this influx of information and utilize it in such a way that is beneficial, well, that is a opportunity that should not be squandered. It may take time and research to discern what is truly valuable and accurate information, but why shouldn’t we devote that kind of effort to educating ourselves? It hardly seems a steep price to pay, in my estimation. The hope is that, as the sources of “news” multiply and morph, future generations will increasingly become experts at determining what

is reliable. Not to throw the phrase back in my day around too lightly but… back when I was in college, media was pretty much defined as print or broadcast; newspapers, magazines, television, radio. Social media was only just beginning to take off, and its potential as a legitimate source of news – breaking or otherwise – was as yet unanticipated. Fast forward to the present day, when your average elementary school student is “plugged in” to his/her own cell phone throughout the day. My, how times have changed. Regardless of whether we support this development, the fact is - it’s happening. Best to jump on board and learn to harness the power of the media. It’s here to stay.

The Deer Park School District honored the achievements of its artistic achievers at the April 25th Board of Education meeting, with a awards ceremony led by Bradley Murphy, the district’s curriculum associate for fine and performing arts.
