Life’s WORC’s Family Center for Autism Announces Scholarship Program Life’s WORC (www. lifesworc.org), a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism through its residential, community and trust services, which this year is celebrating its 50th anniversary – Celebrate 50! - wants Long Island, Queens and Manhattan residents to know that its Family Center for Autism in Garden City, NY offers scholarships to help those who are financially-
challenged to gain access to its wide range of programs. In addition to its services, which include Behavioral Analysis Services, Family Support Services, and School-based Services, the Center offers art camps, sports and fitness, music and movement, scient and tech, salon and spa, and vocational programs. The scholarship program, which was first introduced in 2015, was created when it became clear that there were many in the community who simply did not have the additional financial resources to pay for the Center’s programs despite the fees being kept to a minimum. Today, in light of the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the increasing number of families experiencing financial hardships, the scholarship program is even more critical. Hope House Ministries is a non-profit organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected. They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal financial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations. Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility. There are so many ways that this non-profit can truly help you get your life on a better track. Additionally, there are plenty of ways for people to get involved in helping others through volunteering. Over the past 40 years, thousands of people have donated their time and talent to help this organization reach those in need. In 2013, the founder of Hope House Ministries approached long-time supporters of this organization, Barbara and Arti, with an idea of a retail space that could bring in needed funds for Little Portion Frirary, a home which houses 65 young men in recovery of drug and alcohol addiction that is ran by Hope House Ministries. The hope was that the proceeds that would potentially be brought in from a retail space could pay for these young men’s college classes, food, utilities and transportation costs. Some years later, the perfect location for a store was found and they decided to open up a beautiful boutique there. Since their organization is all about second chances, they called it Hope
Springs Eternal Second Chance Boutique. This boutique is open to the public MondaySaturday from 11AM-5PM. You can expect to find beautiful items for sale here, such as clothing (some still with tags on them), household goods, and furniture. They only accept very gently used items and everything is cleaned and prepared for sale by a team of dedicated volunteers (the boutique is operated by volunteers only)! The selfless efforts of their volunteers truly makes the store feel warm and inviting. After rent and utilities are paid, all the rest of the proceeds go directly to the organization, which helps those in need. In addition to that, the boutique makes many homeless individuals feel loved and cared for by giving them items of clothing free of charge and allowing them to use their bathroom when needed. If you are looking to make a difference right here on Long Island or if you are just looking for a special something, stop by the boutique located at 19 Cherub Lane in Port Jefferson Station and make a purchase! Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health.The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings. The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health. Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.

Young Artists Focus On Communication For Poster Contest
Doreen Bellantoni’s class at Deer Park’s May Moore Primary School invited one student from each second-grade class to join them in entering a Long Island-wide poster contest held by the Long Island Speech-Language-Hearing Association. The students at May Moore joined together
to create a poster that illustrates the power of positive communication and the ways that communication has the ability to connect people. Students discussed the different methods of communication that are used by themselves and their peers, including verbal communication,
sign language and communication devices. Some students drew pictures of themselves using nonverbal communication, such as communication devices and sign language, while others illustrated themselves using kind JOHN F.
