Walkway Dedicated Friends, family, and former colleagues of Ellen T. McVeety gathered at the Town of Babylon 9/11 Memorial last week to honor the longtime councilwoman who was instrumental in the original planning and development of the site. The pathway between Overlook and Cedar beaches that leads to the

memorial will now be called Ellen T. McVeety Way. Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer joined with Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilman Tom Donnelly, Councilman Lindsay Henry, and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone to reveal the sign displaying the new name of the pathway.

McVeety, who served as a Town councilwoman from 1999-2013, was honored for her years of public service and specifically for her significant role in working closely with 9/11 families to create the memorial. Supervisor Schaffer presented McVeety with an official Town proclamation WALKWAY DEDICATED - Deputy Supervisor Martinez, Supervisor Schaffer, former to honor the special day. Readers have been writing in lately, inquiring as to my whereabouts, my wellbeing, my latest exploits… So I’m here, as requested, to fill you all in on my comings and goings – well, as much as one can come and go in the confines of a one-gallon aquarium, but you know… The latest bit of exciting news – potentially, anyway – is my Human’s impending purchase of a friend for me! Yes, that’s right, Buddy the Betta will soon be accompanied by the likes of a small, colorful (but not too colorful), aquatic snail. I’m thinking purple, to

complement my gorgeous aqua fins. The best part is that, in addition to having a companion for those ohso-long days when my Human leaves me to my own devices, my new little friend can also serve as a portable vacuum cleaner of sorts. With my larger residence, the maintenance can be a bit much, and I do like immaculate living quarters. I’ve even picked out a name – “Squeegee.” Oh what fun we will have together, so long as he keeps those long tentacles off my delicate fins, of course... and away from my food… and off of my favorite bedtime leaf… and, well, we’ll see how it

goes. This could be shortlived. Other than that, life in the bowl is pretty much status quo. I’m going on 15 months old, still as vibrant and beautiful (and humble) as ever, and my Human has graduated to feeding me twice a day – small portions, but still, I’ll take what I can get. It’s a good life – especially when Grammy comes to visit and makes kissy-faces at me. ‘Til next time, this is Buddy, anxiously awaiting the arrival of my new googly-eyed roommate. schoolers wrote papers explaining the information they found. They were then invited to come after school, brushes in hand, and clean ancient Roman coins dating back 2,000 years. “Mr. Colletti often brings his love of history to the classroom through ancient artifacts,” said Heather

All-League winners Nailah Edmead and Victoria Major led the varsity girls track team, with Major also finishing fourth in

the state in high jump and setting a school record en route to All-County and All-State honors. Major was presented with a commemorative framed jersey, signed by the team and coaches Jim Petti and Kevin Marner. The varsity boys track team yielded seven AllLeague winners: Ryan Brown, Christopher Cox, Joseph Curry, Alex Delassalle, Nicholas Fenton, Alvin Sime and Michael Theiling. Varsity bowling featured Joseph Thomas, who won an SCBCA Award for having a 200-plus average, and Adam Zimmerman, who won the Suffolk County Individual Bowling Tournament, earned AllState status as a member of the Section XI state championship team, and recorded a 241.8 season average, the highest among all Suffolk County bowlers. The varsity kickline squad finished second in kick and third in the open competition at the Nationals Tournament, and second in the open competition and first in both kick and pom categories at the LIKA Championships.

Recognizing the memorable achievements of its students, Deer Park High School’s winter athletic awards honored eight sports teams in a ceremony at the high school auditorium during the Board of Education meeting on April 19th. Athletic Director Dominick Fontana and Superintendent Eva J. Demyen presented each student-athlete with a certificate in front of their proud families. Six of these sports – varsity boys basketball, varsity girls basketball, varsity boys swimming and diving, varsity girls track, varsity boys track, and kickline – earned Scholar/Athlete team recognition for their successful commitment to both athletics and academics. Teams awarded this honor by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association are required to have five players or more and earn a cumulative team GPA of 90 percent or higher.
