Timeless I recently celebrated my twelve-year anniversary of working here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. How quickly time does ﬂy. I can’t say I recall the exact start date of any previous jobs; but this one happened to coincide with my grandmother’s birthday, and so it was instantly commemorated for being just a bit more special. Bittersweet, perhaps, since her passing… but May 2nd shall always hold a place in my heart. It’s funny how we place such importance on certain dates, knowing full well that each subsequent year will bring with it an entirely different set of emotions and circumstances; in effect, no two anniversaries will ever be the same, whether it be of the celebratory or the solemn

sort. Expectations rarely hold up to the standards we have imposed. If you had asked me twelve years ago what I would be doing in the year 2017, I can’t say I would have pinpointed my current situation for what it is; nor would I have had any real inkling as to what would transpire in the decade to come. There is something to be said for longevity, to be sure. As long as you are able to ﬁnd fulﬁllment in your daily life, who’s to say what you “should” be doing at any stage? Only you. The calendar is merely a guideline, a means of breaking up the years into more manageable chunks of time by which to take a step back and evaluate. One day at a time, that’s about all most

of us can handle. Some will be good, some bad; but in the end, they will steer your life in a particular direction. That, you can be sure of. Who knows what the next twelve years might bring. Maybe I’ll be writing my 1000th column for South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Perhaps I’ll be taking photos as I journey from one corner of the world to another, journaling as I travel to undiscovered lands. Or maybe, I’ll have gotten all that out of my system and decided to settle down in a house in the suburbs with the white picket fence. Who knows. In the meantime, another May 2nd has come and gone, very different from the last and most likely nothing like the next. Only time will tell.

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called ﬂavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the ﬁght against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Band-Aid Project More than 200 students from Deer Park’s Robert Frost Middle School participated in the BandAid Project on April 6th as part of the school’s celebration of Autism and Disability Acceptance Month. The Band-Aid Project, a movement to increase not just awareness but acceptance of people with autism and developmental disabilities, provides students with ﬁrst-hand experience of the daily struggles of people with disabilities. This lesson and insight is the ﬁrst step towards acceptance.

Clad in blue, each participating student applied a Band-Aid across their mouth to render them unable to speak, and communicated during classes only via nonelectronic means. At the conclusion of the day, the students designed mock Instagram posts reﬂecting their experiences, results that were both informative and inspired. “My experience today was eye-opening,” said student Jonathan DeJesus. “It really makes you realize that once you can’t talk, you face a whole new set of challenges. With the loss

of communication, I felt a gain in respect for everyone who has autism and their day-to-day challenges.” “The development of acceptance begins with education,” said speech teacher Stephanie O’Connell. “On that day, these students had a glimpse of what having a disability is like. Carrying the message of love and acceptance for all people in our community is the mission of this project, and I know we achieved that. Little Mermaid Delighting their families and instilling conﬁdence in their own dramatic talents, second-graders in the Music Club at Deer Park’s May Moore Primary School presented a Broadwaystyle production of “The Little Mermaid” for two daytime and two evening performances in April. The young actors began working on the show back in the beginning of October, under the direction of Kristen Lombardo, and

practiced and rehearsed their lines during the course of several months with the help of parents and grandparents. “Kudos to the cast and crew,” said Principal Alicia Konecny. “The costumes, lighting and set were amazing, and the show was out of this world. The audience was truly transported under the sea.” “They only rehearsed with me once a week for an hour after school, but

their enthusiasm and constant energy pushed us along each week,” said Lombardo. “They amazed me, being only 7 and 8 years-old. I truly believe that if you raise the bar, and have faith in your students, there is nothing they can’t do. I am incredibly proud of these kids. Their talents have only skimmed the surface of what they can achieve.”
