Deer Park High School’s undefeated boys crosscountry team won its first League IV championship title since 1995 on April 6, going 5-0 in league competition. Junior Aidan Neilson, the individual league champion, was also undefeated individually, winning every race, while Daniel Thomas finished sixth in all of Division II at

the division championship meet and earned a spot in the county championship as the second seed. Neilson, Thomas and fellow runners Dan Catano, Justin Petrizzo and Dorian Pino earned AllLeague recognition, giving Deer Park the most AllLeague honors out of the 14 allotted within the league. “Our team was so close to this accomplishment

the past few years,” said Coach Thomas Brouillard. “We were runner up the previous two seasons. It has personally been extremely rewarding to watch the athletes’ growth and see the hard work these young men put in – and past athletes before them as well – pay off in bringing the program to the next level.”

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS BLESSING OF THE BIKES - The annual Blessing of the Bikes was held at Our Lady of the Rosary Council 4428 in Deer Park. The Knights on Bikes live and witness Faith as Catholic motorcyclists. The blessing was given by the council’s Chaplin Father Patrick Grace.

Memory Project Art Exchange graders used various art media and incorporated themes of friendship, peace and happiness. The artwork was set to be exchanged at the end of March 2020, but the process was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now in the 2020-2021 school year, Nussbaum was finally able to send the artwork from the students in Pakistan to her students, who are now sixth graders at Robert Frost Middle School. “When I found out that we would not be returning to teaching in school for the remainder of the

school year, I made sure to bring my students’ artwork home,” Nussbaum said. “They had been working so hard and I knew how much it meant to be a part of this special opportunity. I was in touch with members of the Memory Project organization, and they were so happy to help and make this work. Our students were thrilled to find that the art exchange was complete. This opportunity allowed my students to connect with students from another country and learn that we can all be united through our art.”

Hope House Ministries is a non-proﬁt organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected. Their mission is founded in the spirit of St. Louis de Montfort, who had a commitment to the poor and the courage to do what no one else had the courage to do. They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal ﬁnancial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations. Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility. Hope House Ministries was founded by Fr. Francis Pizzarelli, SMM, LCSW-R, ACSW, DCSW. 41 years ago, Fr. Francis discovered hundreds of youth who were homeless, experiencing mental health issues and living with addictions and it wasn’t long before he realized that neither government nor faith communities were doing enough to meet the crisis of homelessness. Why does NY State have such restrictive guidelines for animal hospitals?

We enjoy having you there too.

The NY State government has put detailed guidelines in place for all businesses, not just veterinarians. For example, medical facilities are required to screen patients before admitting them into the facility.

However right now we are required to follow guidelines issued by New York State that state “Curbside intake and pickup of animals should be used, wherever practical, to minimize the numbers of clients in waiting areas and exam rooms.”* Although that creates a lot of extra work for our staff, we are committed to complying with the NY State safety guidelines during the COVID-19 crisis, and to protect our client’s health and safety. *Exceptions can be made in situations like euthanasia

Are these still necessary? Restrictions are lifted on other things. By July 2020, restrictions like curbside check-in have helped reduce the number of people diagnosed with COVID-19 in New York State down from over 10,000 a day to below 1,000. At the same time we have seen infections rise dramatically in other states who had fewer restrictions.

Deer Park Girls XC Team Wins First-Ever League Championship should be months in the making and we only had a few weeks. Regardless, they worked hard and smart every single day and made sure to do their part. It paid off. The energy level of this team was unlike anything I’ve seen before. They were excited and looked forward to each race, especially considering the long layoff the COVID-19 pandemic had forced on us. We were happy just to be back doing something. Winning the league championship was a nice bonus.” At the county championships on April 22, Deer Park earned third, with Marquez coming in eighth place.

“It was an amazing season with high hopes, but it was cut short with a heartbreaker as we missed out on the team county championships by only 0.27 seconds,” Petti said. “That’s the way it goes though, and we couldn’t be prouder. It ended earlier than expected, but the memory of this season will last a lifetime. We said one last goodbye to our seniors who were the biggest catalyst in our success as a team. I thank them for their leadership and compassion. Up next is spring track, but you can bet we are itching to get back at it in September.”
