Lidl Breaks Ground On State-Of-The-Art Store In Deer Park

Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk www.eoc-suffolk.com The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk (EOC of Suffolk), is a nonprofit, communitybased organization that was founded in 1967 as part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s “Great Society” legislation. EOC of Suffolk promotes self-sufficiency among low-income families and individuals by revitalizing communities, broadening the minds of children and assisting families in need. Formally designated as a “Community Action Agency” by the federal government, it channels block grants from Washington to meet the needs of Long Islanders.

On Wednesday, April 27, Lidl US held a groundbreaking ceremony with local officials at the site of its future Deer Park, New York, store. The 35,359 square foot facility, Lidl’s first ground-up construction on Long Island, will be a state-ofthe-art store and Lidl’s largest on Long Island when it opens in early 2023. Lidl will invest more than $15 Million in the new store and will create 65 new jobs for the community, with starting pay of $17.50 an hour, and comprehensive benefits for all employees including healthcare. The groundbreaking ceremony included the debut of Lidl’s new
reusable charity bag benefiting the John Theissen Children’s Foundation. Lidl partnered with Lauren Rochel to create a limitededition reusable bag that will launch in stores on May 4. All proceeds from the while-supplies-last bag will be donated to John Theissen Children’s Foundation. Lidl has been a proud partner of JTCF since 2019. Other attendees and speakers at the Lidl groundbreaking included: Suffolk County Office of Economic Development and Planning Chief Deputy Commissioner Chris Gonzalez, CEO of Long Island Cares Paul Pachter and John Theissen. The event was
kicked off with the Pledge of Allegiance led by the American Legion Hall Post 94 Deer Park. 2) Its Developmental Disabilities work, which provides a comprehensive array of services for people with developmental disabilities – all aimed at enhancing their quality of life. 3) The Chronic Health Care Coordination program, which helps individuals manage their own physical health, mental health and social needs in a comprehensive manner. Additionally, five of their many programs offered in Suffolk County include: 1) EOC of Suffolk’s Youth and Adolescent Services, which promotes leadership, healthy decision making, sexual health and pregnancy prevention among local youth. The organization’s after-school programs serve more than 1,000 middle school students daily, providing academic and skill-building activities that promote
2) The Rapid Rehousing Program, which helps individuals and families experiencing homelessness and aims to return them as quickly as possible to permanent housing within their home communities. EOC of Suffolk team members address and troubleshoot barriers to obtaining and maintaining permanent housing. 3) EOC of Suffolk helps keep neighborhood streets safe though its SNUG (GUNS spelled backwards) Violence Prevention program, which functions in cooperation with residents, private industry and communitybased organizations. SNUG helps identify and defuse community “hot spots”. It also provides mentorship and leadership-oriented services to youth who are gang members or who are at risk of joining gangs. 4) The organization’s Targeted Prevention and Supportive Service Program supports people living with HIV/ AIDS. Clients are treated with respect, dignity, privacy and trust. Services include transportation, consumer advice, assistance obtaining benefits, linkages to substance abuse and mental health services, legal services, health education and testing. 5) Recognizing the importance of childcare for working families, EOC of Suffolk owns and operates three childcare learning centers: Way to Grow in East Patchogue, Montauk Childcare Center and a childcare center at the Family Court complex in Central Islip. Those facilities meet the highest standards of early childhood education. Children participate in activities providing intellectual stimulation and fostering self-reliance and social responsibility. Promoting The Arts And Local Businesses In The Town Of Babylon Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts (BACCA), in partnership with Colored Colors, present a multilocation, self-guided tour and art exhibit throughout the Town of Babylon. Cafeinspired works created by local artists will be on view at six coffee shops from May 26, 2022 until June 26, 2022. The 2022 Cafe D’Art Tour is supported by public funding provided by Suffolk County. The development of this program was sponsored by the Town of Babylon Local Development Corporation as part of the Babylon Together project. Artists are invited to submit up to three (3) works of art in any medium, inspired by a cafe theme, for consideration to be displayed in local cafes across the Town of Babylon. ACTORS SHINE IN “ONE ACT SHOWCASE” - Young theater students from Deer Park’s Robert Frost Middle School presented a “One Act Showcase” on March 25 and 26, performing 18 short plays written by Laurie Allen, Jennifer Kirkeby and Erin Moughon. The Sons and Daughters of Italy in America, Constantino Brumidi Lodge N0. 2211 in Deer Park, recently hosted a Testimonial Dinner Dance in honor of Immediate Past President, Carmine E. Soldano. This impressive gala took place on Saturday, April 9th, 2022 at their lodge located at 2075 Deer Park Avenue in Deer Park. Approximately 140 Guests including dignitaries, local
politicians, presidents from other lodges, family and friends were in attendance. A successful 100 page commemorative journal was published in conjunction with this event. Carmine was lodge President from 2018 through 2021 serving through tough times including the national pandemic and serious personal medical issues. He also served a Chairperson
of the District 1 President’s Council (All Suffolk County Lodges) from 2019 to 2021 and currently serves as District Deputy to the Guglielmo Marconi Lodge in Islip and the Giuseppe A. Nigro Lodge in Brentwood. Catering (by Brumidi Catering) and Music was second to none and all guests enjoyed a memorable evening.

Clothing Donations Needed For Long Island Children

Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10. Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach
program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985. “We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port
Washington. The “store” – staffed entirely by volunteers – lets families pick out the things they need, at no cost to them. Those interested in making contributions of clothing or gift cards, should call Ethical Friends of Children at 516-280-5526 or email efoc@ehsli.org
