The Suffolk Community College Foundation Salute to Excellence Gala celebrating Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO will be held on May 4th at the Hilton Long Island in Huntington. Letters of Intent of the varsity for five years, she serves as team captain and has earned three All-League and two AllDivision honors. A veteran of three Class AA playoff runs, she has guided Deer Park’s 10-1 softball team to its current first-place standing and recently reached the prestigious 100-hit mark. Jenkins, who plays
basketball, will attend LIU Post this fall, majoring in business. During his Deer Park hoops tenure, he won two League IV championships, and was named All-County twice, All-Conference three times and All-League three times. All funds raised at the 5K Jones Beach walk will benefit programs at The Katz Institute for Women’s

(the mesh) that is placed under the urethra to support it like a hammock. The purpose is to prevent the urethra from excess descent with the increased abdominal pressure. Mesh has been used successfully for a number of years internationally with approximately 80-90% satisfaction rates. Potential complications of mesh are well known. It needs to be thoroughly under the vaginal tissues so it does not erode into the vagina. Erosions have occurred even years after the placement of the sling. These problems are treatable. Women who suffer from embarrassing leakage need not suffer in silence. Great success and thousands of satisfied women have had their lives improved after surgical repair. The urge type incontinence refers to the inability to get to the toilet on time when the urge to void begins. There are many causes for this type of incontinence. It may vary from one incontinent episode a day to multiple accidents, daytime and nighttime frequency. The leakage tends to be of larger amounts as the bladder starts to empty despite trying to stop it. This type of leakage is not not treatable with surgery like the stress type. Decreasing the amount of coffee, tea, colas, alcohol and spicy food may help to some degree. Voiding more frequently, prior to the urge may prevent the accident. Medications are often used. The purpose of

Leakage of urine is not normal but is very common in women. In most cases the problem can be improved. There are a number of reasons why women may have problems with their bladder control but the two most prevalent types are stress incontinence and urge incontinence. Stress incontinence is when some loss of urine takes place at the same moment as the cough, laugh or exercise. It is related to the increased abdominal pressure which puts excess pressure on the bladder. It is common in women in the years after childbirth but may also be a problem for cigarette smokers, people with asthma and chronic constipation. It may also be hereditary. The repeated straining movement of the cough or pushing to have a bowel movement weakens the connective tissues. Treatment options include pelvic floor exercises to try and strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor, biofeedback and surgery. When the leakage is substantial surgery is usually the best course of action. Surgery for stress incontinence has been greatly improved in the last few years with the development of slings. In the past, the surgery required abdominal incisions with a hospital stay and prolonged recovery. Today the procedures have become ambulatory with quick recovery and very good success rates. The sling refers to a piece of material

Patriots Send Gifts Deer Park High School’s Patriot Club recently packed and mailed eight care packages to three former Deer Park students and current U.S. service members: Justin Gallo and George Tirado in Afghanistan and Jonathan Trautwig in Iraq.
The packages included five cases of Girl Scouts cookies sold by Robert Frost Middle School student Kaitlyn Incandela, who asked her customers to donate for the Patriot Club on behalf of the former students who are currently deployed overseas.
According to Patriot Club adviser Laurie Osbern, at the request of Tirado, the club also used some of its monetary donations to purchase dodgeballs for morale-building recreation time for the soldiers.

Clergy Night Held
Our Lady of the Rosary Council No. 4428, Knights of Columbus in Deer Park, held their annual Clergy Night on April 20th. Traditionally, this night is set aside for all the Clergy in the area to get together with each other, the Council, and the community. Members of the Clergy give some background information on themselves and the Parish/Church they

For World Language Exploration Day at Deer Park’s May Moore Primary School, seniors from the high school studying Spanish, Italian and French visited kindergarten, first-grade and secondgrade classrooms to teach language lessons to the younger students. The annual project was planned to coincide with
World Languages and Cultural Awareness Month. “The high school seniors get the opportunity to create engaging lessons for the primary kids, allowing them to think critically about how languages are both learned and taught,” said teacher Ashley Rosenberg. “Equally as important, the elementary kids gain an awareness

“Morning is an important time of day, because how you spend your morning can often tell you what kind of day you are going to have.” ~ Lemony Snicket We all have our routines. Me, I find particular solace in the schedules of daily life more so than most. My mornings, especially, tend to dictate the tone of the afternoon and evening. This is both good and bad, of course. A missed wake-up alarm, a favorite pair of jeans in the laundry, no more milk in the fridge… all can lead to being thrown off track and sent on your way in a state of disarray. Whereas, when things run like clockwork, the feeling tends to be more of the notion that nothing can stand in the way of productivity. Who knew the snooze button could hold so much power? In lieu of last week’s column
ruminating on the power of the almighty calendar and its tendency to dictate our schedules to the point that we no longer can differentiate those things we truly enjoy doing from those that are pure obligation, I received several kind letters from readers expressing their complete agreement that their lives, too, have been taken over by those tiny square boxes. One woman even went so far as to recommend a book, “Quiet Mind,” which suggests that we would all be better served by taking a moment to sit back and relax, to find an hour of peace in which to clear our minds of the clutter that accumulates over the course of day after day spent running from one task to the next. The idea is to eventually, over time, expand upon this hour and have its influence extend throughout the entire day. How nice that would be.

It all begins with one moment, whether it is rising early to see the sun come up over the Great South Bay, or taking the extra time to prepare a homemade breakfast during the rush of the week, or even driving the scenic route to work. Little things add up to big things, and big things become a way of living, day by day. There is ample benefit to be found in making that effort. It is not a perfect process, to be sure. There will still be those days when the snooze button seems the most viable option, when skipping breakfast and running out the door to sit in traffic is how you are destined to spend your morning. But that doesn’t have to dictate the tone of the entire day. Pop a CD in, turn up the volume, sit back and enjoy the ride. There are miles to go before you sleep.

Her 13 year old son Jonathon was in a tragic accident today and lost his life... this family experienced such a tragedy 5 years ago with the loss of their father George Gonzalez.. WELLINGTON, Fla. (CBS12) — Grief counselors are at Emerald Cove Middle School on Monday to help students cope with the loss of a fellow student, according to district leaders. Jonathon Gonzalez, 13, died after crashing a dirt bike over the weekend. It happened Sunday afternoon near Oakberry Circle and Oak Hamlet Lane in Wellington. The dirt bike crashed into a canal, according to Palm Beach County Fire Rescue spokesman Albert Borroto. A medical helicopter took the boy to the hospital where he later died. Palm Beach County Schools says the counselors are being made available to both students and staff. The Gonzalez family set up a GoFundMe page (https://www.gofundme.com/our-beloved-jonathon-gonzalez) to help with the funeral expenses. Hundreds of students and friends showed up at a candlelight vigil at the Wellington Edge clubhouse. Mourners marched to the canal where the crash happened.

Options for Community Living held its third annual comedy night fundraising event at Governor’s in Levittown on Sunday, April 23rd. The event raised close to $3,000 from the approximately 70 employees, friends and supporters in attendance. The proceeds from this event will benefit Options’

Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco was honored yesterday by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) Long Island Office in a private ceremony at the Central Islip Courthouse. The DEA paid tribute to Sheriff
DeMarco to recognize his “Unwavering Partnership, Support and Assistance in Furthering the Successful Investigations and Prosecutions of Domestic and International Narcotics Trafficking Organizations.” In February of this year, the Sheriff announced that Sheriff’s
Deputy Investigators had participated in a successful 36 month investigation dubbed “Operation Fantastic Four” that took down a large-scale Columbian Drug Organization that has trafficked hundreds of kilograms of cocaine and heroin to the United States, Europe and Central America for distribution. Upon receiving the plaque, DeMarco stated, “I am grateful for the DEA’s recognition and for the remarkable work of our men and women in the Sheriff’s Office who risk their lives during these dangerous investigations in order to stop deadly drugs from entering our communities.”
