The Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship honors the late Ann Marie Brown, who served as vice president for government and public relations for the Hospital Council from 1983 to 1993. Making An Impact On Her Local Community!

Tara Capolongo, a Special Education Teacher in the Bay Shore School District, also a member of NYSUT, is making an impact on her local community! Her sister, Jamie Ferro, is a nurse in the MICU/ CCU and she wanted to do something kind for the staff but couldn’t decide on what to do. A few weeks ago, her sister had called her and asked if she can get her a specific type of lotion to help heal her cracked and bleeding hands due to excessive washing. That was where it all began! Tara placed her first order for 45 bottles of lotion on April 8, 2020 with the intent to donate solely
to her sister’s unit. With a nudge from her other sister, Megan Granelle, she decided to share this mission on Facebook in a public post on that same day. Within 36 minutes of posting, she was able to place an order for another 50 lotions. Another member of NYSUT, the President of the Bay Shore Teacher’s Association, Michael Krieger, embraced the mission and shared her post with their colleagues. A close friend of hers, Jacqueline Azzizzo, shared this post with her friends at Twin Pines Elementary School in Brentwood and with Bay Shore’s Fit Boot Camp. Other close friends,

to have the importance of mental health highlighted,” Cangelosi said. “I grew up in North Babylon and still live in the same neighborhood, I work in Deer Park, and have my private practice in Babylon Village, so this area is home in more ways than one. In a large bowl, combine the first eight ingredients. Crumble turkey over mixture and mix well. Shape into six patties. Moisten a paper towel with cooking oil; using
long-handled tongs, lightly coat the grill rack. Grill burgers, covered, over medium heat or broil 4 inches from the heat for 4 to 6 minutes on each side, or until a thermometer
reads 165 F and juices run clear. Grill buns, uncovered, for 1 to 2 minutes or until toasted. Place burgers on bun bottoms. Top with salsa. Replace bun tops.

Once the grill has been cleaned, make sure none of the bristles fell off and onto the grill.

Essential Staff Providing Care For Animals On Campus Amid Coronavirus (Covid19) Pandemic North Shore Animal League America’s Adoption Center is currently conducting adoption by appointment only. Our Adoption Team is contacting pre-approved adopters with a scheduled day and time to complete their adoption. The health and wellbeing of NSALA staff, volunteers, adopters, and the community remains our priority at this time. We currently have over 40 dogs of various ages and sizes on campus, as well as more than 100 felines, from kittens to older cats, all looking for loving homes. As always, the animals on the NSALA Port Washington campus are being well-cared for by our devoted staff. In addition to finding homes for more than 110 canines, some of whom were from our recent Mill Dog rescue (we saved 100 dogs and puppies from deplorable
conditions with some going to our area shelter partners,) we have also placed more than 30 animals into foster homes. During this time, the Alex Lewyt Veterinary Medical Center will remain open to see sick patients and emergency cases only. Pet owners can rest easy that there is no reason to believe that dogs or cats in the United States might be a source of infection for the new coronavirus disease — COVID-19 — or cause its spread according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. And so far, according to the CDC, there have been no reports of pets becoming sick with COVID-19. This coronavirus appears to be primarily transmitted from human to human. As a pet owner, you may have heard of canine coronavirus, an intestinal infection in dogs, especially puppies, and feline coronavirus, which can cause feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). These types of coronaviruses have been around for quite some time and are not associated with the current outbreak. To protect yourself, your family, and possibly even
your pets, from this new coronavirus, you should follow these precautions: • Frequently wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water (use hand sanitizer with more than 60 percent alcohol if you can’t wash) • Avoid close contact with people who are sick—stay at least three feet away • Cover your mouth/ nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then throw away the used tissues and wash your hands • Stay at home if you are sick • Sanitize often-used surfaces in your home and office If you do become sick with COVID-19, how then should you care for your pet? The CDC recommends that you restrict contact with pets and other animals just as you would with people. Ask another member of your
household to care for your pets while you are sick. If you must do it yourself, wash your hands before and after you interact and wear a facemask. Guardians Of Rescue Is Struggling To Help The Animals Most of us are aware of the toll that the pandemic is having on humans around the country, and even around the world. Yet the economic impacts are being felt beyond humans. The animals are being impacted in numerous ways through this situation, leaving some animal rescue organizations to struggle in being able to provide their services. Guardians of Rescue has had an increase in dogs to care for, while their financial stability to do so declines. Guardians of Rescue is overwhelmed with the hardest hit people who can’t feed their pets and taking in abandoned animals left to fend for themselves which has become a big problem. Now, they are now turning to the people and asking that their organization be rescued amid the pandemic. “We have been providing our rescue services for over 10 years, but now we are struggling to keep our organization going,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “We are in jeopardy because of the perfect storm that this pandemic has created for organizations such as ours. Many people are living paycheck to paycheck so pets are in trouble.” The pandemic has impacted Guardians of Rescue and other animal shelters in a variety of ways, including: Due to so many people having their employment impacted by the virus, donations to the organization are down. This makes it difficult for them
to continue feeding the animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues, and trying to cover all their expenses. Some rescue organizations are seeing adoptions and fosters up but this is because people are homebound right now. This leaves the shelters worried about what will happen to the animals when people go back to work. There are some people who fear for their own well-being and financial stability, which motivates them to drop their pets off at the rescue shelter. They feel they can’t adequately take care of their pets during this time, so they surrender them, putting more strain on shelters. Many shelters have to cancel fundraising events that usually bring in a lot of money to fund their programs. Additionally, some shelters offer spring break camps as a fundraising tool, and those had to be canceled due to the pandemic. Many rescue organizations and shelters are trying to help people care for their pets by providing them with food. This helps to keep the person from surrendering the animals to the shelter or rescue organization. Food donations to many shelters are down, simply because people are focused on their own families and are staying home. This leaves shelters scrambling to try to come up with enough money and food to continue feeding all of the animals, as well as providing them with any medical care they may need. “The pandemic has
created a host of problem for the animals,” says Misseri. “I hope that we can make it through this difficult time, so that we can continue to help the animals in need. Our programs have helped countless animals including military members. uch like St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated by people with no trace of Irish heritage, Cinco de Mayo has become a day of celebration for people who do not trace their ancestry to Mexico. In fact, History.com notes that Cinco de Mayo is a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, where the day commemorates a symbolic yet not significantly strategic win by a heavily outnumbered Mexican army over French forces sent by Napoleon III to establish an empire on Mexican land. In the United States, Cinco de Mayo has become a day to commemorate Mexican culture, including its much-loved cuisine. Food is front and center at many Cinco de Mayo celebrations. Those who simply want to enjoy some homemade Mexican fare this Cinco de Mayo can try their hands at this recipe for “Fiery Corn Salsa” from Kelley Cleary Coffeen’s “200 Easy Mexican Recipes” (Robert Rose).
FIERY CORN SALSA Makes 2 cups 1⁄4
cup olive oil

tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice

DIRECTIONS In a large bowl, combine oil, lime juice and cilantro. Add tomatoes, corn and jalapeño to taste. Mix well until corn mixture is well coated. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate, stirring occasionally, for 1 hour or up to 2 days. TIP In place of the corn kernels, you can used canned corn, drained; frozen corn, thawed; or corn from the cob, cooked on the stove top. For a smoky flavor, use corn grilled on the barbecue grill.

inco de Mayo celebrates the 1862 defeat of the French by the Mexican army at the Battle of Puebla. That battle occurred during the Franco-Mexican War, which was an invasion of Mexico launched by the French in 1861. The French invaded Mexico as a result of newly elected Mexican President Benito Juarez's decision to suspend interest payments on loans the country took out from foreign countries. France was one such creditor, but the French were not the only country to send troops to Mexico in response to Juarez's decision. Spain and Great Britain also sent troops to Veracruz, but both countries entered negotiations with Mexico and ultimately
withdrew their forces. However, France, under the leadership of Napoleon III, wanted to ensure access to Latin American markets. The French naval fleet's arrival in Veracruz forced President Juarez and his government to retreat. Months later, Juarez's force of 2,000 squared off against 6,000 French troops at the Battle of Puebla. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Mexican forces claimed victory, losing fewer than 100 men while French casualties numbered nearly 500. While the victory itself did not prove a major win in the war against the French, it symbolized the strength of the Mexican people and served to strengthen the resistance movement. Cinco de Mayo is a minor holiday in Mexico, but has grown into a popular celebration of Mexican culture in the United States.

Who Are Your “Toilet Paper & Paper Towels?” As we still find ourselves enduring this pandemic, we are slowly yet surely seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. T h e r e is talk of re-opening businesses, heightened anxiety seems to be diminishing and the curve has begun to flatten. My thoughts and prayers remain with those in need, as well as those serving on the frontlines. We will continue to stand strong and one day this pandemic will fully be behind us. This past week, our Publisher was able to purchase toilet paper and paper towels in bulk. He kindly left a large stash of these items in our office and let each employee know that they can take some home as needed. It was a selfless gesture and people appreciated it. However, when I got home I chuckled at the thought of it! Who would have thought that toilet paper and paper towels would ever be viewed as hot items and that employees would get excited over the distribution of paper products? Not me!

Just like with those paper products, there are moments where I forget just how important they are to me.

Catholic Health Services Offers Tips On Talking To Kids About Coronavirus As part of the effort to contain the spread of coronavirus, local schools have been ordered to close for several weeks. This change in routine leads to many questions from children who want to know why they can’t attend school or spend time with their friends. Providing answers to inquisitive youngsters can be challenging for parents, trying to balance sharing information without unnecessarily alarming their kids. “With schools closed and many parents working at home temporarily, children will want to know what is causing the
changes to what they perceive as normal life,” said Catholic Health Services Chairman of Behavior Health Ronald Brenner, MD. “Also, mobile technology gives many young people access to news and information, which could overwhelm them and cause anxiety.” The New York State Office of Mental Health offers several suggestions for parents speaking to their kids about coronavirus. - Think about and rehearse scripts for discussing coronavirus with their children. Kids take cues from caregivers about how anxious they should be about a topic.
- Discuss the situation openly. Avoiding the topic or providing blanket responses may fuel anxiety. - Don’t give more information then is requested. Check to make sure your children understand your response by asking them to repeat back what they have heard and let them know you are open to more questions. - Help your school-aged child and adolescents set boundaries on their information flow in the same way you are setting your own boundaries. Help them identify factual sources of information and set appropriate intervals to
check-in. - Keep as many routines intact as possible. For children who are out of school, it is important to maintain other familiar routines such as mealtimes and bedtimes. Use technology to keep children in touch with a friend or older family members. This allows them to maintain connections while adhering to calls to stay at home to helpprevent the spread of coronavirus. - Encourage physical activity and time outside, where possible. Staying active and having opportunities to be outdoors safely are
helpful in mitigating anxiety and building resilience. - Use this situation as an opportunity to teach distress tolerance skills that will be helpful to your kids in any situation. For those who wish to speak to a mental health professional, CHS offers a host of services including telepsychiatry, which improves access to psychiatric services for Emergency Department (ED) patients, particularly after normal office hours. The service is currently offered in the EDs of Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre, St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in
Smithtown and Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip.
