Guilt Free Relaxation I hope this article finds you well. I pray for all those who are sick, anxious, stressed and restless. I also would like to thank all of t h o s e who are on the frontlines, working tirelessly to help those in need.

Frost Students Win Third In LIFACS Sustainability Challenge Jordyn Haskins and Erin Sullivan, family and consumer science students at Deer Park’s Robert Frost Middle School, recently entered the Long Island FACS Sustainability Challenge and won third place. For their project, the pair collected Doritos

chip bags from the school’s cafeteria, washed them, dried them on a clothesline and then sewed the bags together, layer by layer, to make an apron. “We tried to solve the problem of eliminating chip bags going into landfills, and used the repurposed aprons

during our FACS classes,” said Haskins. “To make sure that future generations enjoy what we enjoy, we need sustainability. If we can reuse and make different things out of used materials like rubber and plastic, we can make a better future.”

NECESSITY – STILL THE MOTHER OF INVENTION - Robert and Michael Stadelman work on their ventilator prototype on the ﬂoor of their kitchen. For one science and health-focused family in Long Island’s Catholic school community the global pandemic and cancellation of this year’s STEM Fair gave them the time, and the incentive they needed to go above and beyond what anyone could have expected. The Stadelman family, intrigued by the global shortage of medical ventilators, built a ventilator in their kitchen with items they had around the house and in Mr. Stadelman’s first aid kit. Meet Erin and Robert Stadelman, and their son Michael. Erin is a computer/technology teacher at Our Lady of the Hamptons Regional School in Southampton. Her

husband, Robert, works as an Electrical Engineer and volunteers as an EMTCC (Emergency Medical Technician - Critical Care) in their home town. Their son, Michael, is a student at St. Mary’s School in East Islip. Like the rest of us, they are respecting the quarantine by staying home. Also like the rest of us, the Stadelman’s wanted to do something to help. Unlike the rest of us, the Stadelman family actually used their time at home to build a ventilator! During the build, Robert Stadelman taught son Michael a lot about the inner components and machinations of a ventilator; about BVMs (bag valve masks), what a piston is and does, and Michael learned to work

with electronics and circuits. For Robert, this was a proof of concept prototype. “I sure with a little work we could improve this to be a viable emergency ventilator. Public demand for environmental safeguards grew in the second half of the twentieth century, and those demands have grown stronger in recent years. Legislation is continually evolving to protect the air, land and water. Sustainability has joined the buzzwords of the movement, and most industries now have a vested interest in changes that can minimize risk to human health and the environment. Mitigating or avoiding environmental effects, proper waste disposal, reduction in water discharge, and emphasis on reducing, reusing and recycling have become important components of environmental wellness. And people are being educated at earlier stages on the importance of environmental mindfulness. For example, core subjects of the environmental movement are increasingly covered in elementary schools. Twenty million people turned out for the first Earth Day in the United States. Today, more than 190 countries are engaged and more than one billion individuals are mobilized for action every Earth Day, advises the Earth Day Network. To mark the 50th anniversary, the most pressing topic for the year is climate change. Climate Action is the 2020 Earth Day theme to engage the global public. There is still work to be done, but great progress has been made since 1970.

Essential Staff Providing Care For Animals On Campus Amid Coronavirus (Covid19) Pandemic North Shore Animal League America’s Adoption Center is currently conducting adoption by appointment only. Our Adoption Team is contacting pre-approved adopters with a scheduled day and time to complete their adoption. The health and wellbeing of NSALA staff, volunteers, adopters, and the community remains our priority at this time. We currently have over 40 dogs of various ages and sizes on campus, as well as more than 100 felines, from kittens to older cats, all looking for loving homes. As always, the animals on the NSALA Port Washington campus are being well-cared for by our devoted staff. In addition to finding homes for more than 110 canines, some of whom were from our recent Mill Dog rescue (we saved 100 dogs and puppies from deplorable

conditions with some going to our area shelter partners,) we have also placed more than 30 animals into foster homes. During this time, the Alex Lewyt Veterinary Medical Center will remain open to see sick patients and emergency cases only. While we are doing adoptions by appointment, NSALA’s Adoption Center is temporarily closed to the general public in accordance with New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo’s statewide directives and to control the number of people in the Adoption Center at any one time. How Does The New Coronavirus Affect You And Your Pets?

Pet owners can rest easy that there is no reason to believe that dogs or cats in the United States might be a source of infection for the new coronavirus disease — COVID-19 — or cause its spread according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. And so far, according to the CDC, there have been no reports of pets becoming sick with COVID-19. This coronavirus appears to be primarily transmitted from human to human. As a pet owner, you may have heard of canine coronavirus, an intestinal infection in dogs, especially puppies, and feline coronavirus, which can cause feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). These types of coronaviruses have been around for quite some time and are not associated with the current outbreak. To protect yourself, your family, and possibly even

your pets, from this new coronavirus, you should follow these precautions: • Frequently wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water (use hand sanitizer with more than 60 percent alcohol if you can’t wash) • Avoid close contact with people who are sick—stay at least three feet away • Cover your mouth/ nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then throw away the used tissues and wash your hands • Stay at home if you are sick • Sanitize often-used surfaces in your home and office If you do become sick with COVID-19, how then should you care for your pet? The CDC recommends that you restrict contact with pets and other animals just as you would with people. Ask another member of your

household to care for your pets while you are sick. If you must do it yourself, wash your hands before and after you interact and wear a facemask. Reduce, reuse, recycle is a mantra for many people. It’s difficult to imagine that just 50 years ago awareness of the state of the environment was not part of the collective consciousness. An emerging public consciousness about the planet began amid environmental issues like increased air pollution and massive consumption of fossil fuels in the 1960s. The bestselling book “Silent Spring” by Rachel Carson also raised public concern for living organisms and the links between pollution and public health. The push for environmental reform gained even more momentum on April 22, 1970, when the first Earth Day was celebrated. Then-Senator Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin put Earth Day on the national stage following a large oil spill that struck off the coast of Santa Barbara, Calif. Before this disaster, recycling was not a word in the popular lexicon. But when the disaster struck, people began to reason that changes would have to be made to save the planet. Since the first Earth Day 50 years ago, many strides have been made in the environmental movement. This grassroots initiative gave rise to the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency, the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act. Holocaust Rememberance Services Online A commemorative annual Holocaust Remembrance Day Service will be part of the weekly Friday evening Sabbath Services held on April 24 by Temple Beth Chai of Hauppauge. Holocaust Remembrance Day is a day where we remember the six million Jews and millions of others who perished in the Holocaust as a result of the Nazi regime and its collaborators. The live-streaming Friday Night Shabbat Services, due to COVID 19, will be held at 7:30pm. We welcome the community to join us for this event, as it is open to non-members as well as the members of Temple Beth Chai.

The guest speaker for 2020 will be Holocaust Survivor Mireille Taub, of Long Island. Ms. Taub was born in Paris, France and was lucky enough to take the last train out before France surrendered to the Nazis. Her train was bombed; she and her family walked to safety, traveled across the Pyrenees and passed through Spain and Portugal, arriving in New York on August 11, 1940. She was not quite two years old. She grew up hearing stories about how her family made preparations to leave (as of 1936) if the Nazis were victorious. Mireille Taub has a professional diploma in special education and a Master’s Degree in reading. She attended

both the Sorbonne undergraduate and graduate programs at the Ecole Du Louvre. At Brooklyn College, she was an Art, English and Classics major. The Fifth Annual Run for Tomorrow’s Hope, originally scheduled for Saturday, April 4th as a road race on the streets of Garden City has been a virtual success. The event, staged by St. Joseph School in Garden City for the benefit of the Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation, a Long Island charity that provides scholarships for students who attend Long Island Catholic elementary schools, had to adapt very quickly to become a virtual race where competitors chose their own favorite place to run, clocked the distance and time using one of a variety of apps, and took a photo of themselves before, during or after their run. In spite of the unique circumstances, the event had 462 participants in the 5K and 1 mile Fun Run, 312 of them competing in the 5K itself. The event’s Race Director, Dr. Michael Spinelli, a Board Member of the Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation said “I am pleased with the way the community that supports our Catholic schools responded under rather challenging circumstances.” The race, which is run each year in the early spring, is widely supported by the families and friends of Catholic elementary and high schools. This year was no exception, with entries from 7 of the area’s Catholic high schools and with participation from 14 of the island’s Catholic elementary schools.

The NYS Department of Health (DOH) strongly encourages nursing homes and other adult care facilities to implement communication protocols for both residents and their families during the COVID-19 pandemic including when the facility learns of a suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19. According to Governor Cuomo’s office, at least 1,064 New Yorkers have died in nursing home facilities since the onset of this Pandemic. Asking the right question and establishing effective communication is extremely important to the well-being of your loved one residing in a long-term care facility. After consultation with leading experts on nursing homes, assisted living facilities and other

long-term care facilities, AARP urges families with loved ones in nursing homes to ask these six key questions of nursing home administrators and staff. 1. Has anyone in the nursing home tested positive for COVID-19? • The NYS DOH recommends that longterm care facilities report this information; however, it is not a requirement so families must ask this question specifically. 2. What is the nursing home doing to prevent infections? • How are nursing home staff, residents and others being screened for COVID-19, especially when they leave and reenter the home? • W h a t precautions are being required of residents, including covering of noses and mouths when staff is in the room, and

how is the nursing home helping them to comply? • Is the nursing home assigning special staff or units for the care of residents who have tested positive for Covid-19? 3. Does nursing home staff have the personal protective equipment (PPE) – such as masks, face shields, gowns, gloves—that they need to stay safe, and keep their patients safe? • Have nursing home staff been given specific training on how to use this PPE? • If not enough PPE is available, what is the plan to obtain personal protective equipment? 4. What is the nursing home doing to help residents stay connected with their families or other loved ones during this time? • Does the nursing home help

residents call their loved ones by phone or video call? • Will the nursing home set up a regular schedule for you to speak with your loved one? 5. What is the plan for the nursing home to communicate important information to both residents and families on a regular basis? • Will the nursing home be contacting you by phone or email, and when? 6. Is the nursing home currently at full staffing levels for nurses, aides, and other workers? • What is the plan to make sure the needs of nursing home residents are met—like bathing, feeding, medication management, social engagement—if the nursing home has staffing shortages? “New Yorkers need to communicate with their
