Shopping with a Chance of Meatballs
I love food shopping. Not browsing for clothes. Not trying on shoes. But aimlessly wandering the aisles of the grocery store, scanning each shelf for potential ingredients in my always innovative “culinary creations”… that, I find enjoyable. This fascination with the supermarket dates back to when I was quite a bit younger, as I recall thinking what fun it would be to have a job stocking shelves with boxes and cans, bottles and bags. Perhaps it was the meticulous lining up of items that appealed to me; needless to say, I did not go on to make a career in this field after all. Growing up, I had zero interest in cooking, or even observing the process involved. Anything beyond using the toaster or microwave, perhaps
the oven on rare occasions, seemed beyond the scope of skills I wanted to learn. Boiling water? Nope. Not even a chance. I had visions of scalding liquids cascading over the top of the pot, pasta and all. And so it remained; until, that is, I moved into my own apartment and realized that perhaps cooking was one of those basic necessities that one needed to master in order to exist in the real world. {along with doing laundry, but that’s a story for another column} And so, with some helpful hints from Mom, and plenty of mixing and matching and “trying” various combinations of things, I began to slowly master this ancient art. By master, I mean I have accumulated enough variations of pasta dishes

and “fancy” salads to get by most weeks. Anything more intricate – well, that’s still a work in progress. Case in point: I have still not attempted, nor do I have any desire to, any entrees involving meats. No raw chopped meat or chicken cutlets or pork chops to tangle with for this girl. I’ve often said I could probably get by being a vegetarian, and one look in the meat department seems to confirm this notion every time. Not that I don’t want to learn how to make a nice traditional Italian sauce with meatballs. I often ask my mom to show me how, with one caveat – can I wear rubber gloves while rolling them? And that, dear readers, is why sauce has yet to be added to my repertoire.

Healthy Choices Deer Park High School child development students visited the district’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School on March 21st as part of National Nutrition Month. The high schoolers delivered a lesson on making healthy choices for
the younger JFK students. “It is rewarding to see our high school students interact and teach the lessons they have learned about healthy eating and making good choices to the youngsters in our district,” said Heather Stewart,
Deer Park’s curriculum associate for social study and family and consumer science. “The real-world application of learning provided a rich experience for all our students.”
Selected for Exhibit Gianna Montes and Blake Muller, both secondgraders at Deer Park’s May Moore Primary School, were selected to represent Deer Park and have their work displayed in the 19th annual Colors of Long Island student art exhibit. Colors of Long Island, sponsored by Astoria
Bank, gives K-12 students the opportunity to show their artistic talents in a museum setting. May Moore was one of 179 schools participating in this year’s exhibition. Accompanied by teachers Briana Nussbaum and Michelle Sarco, both students and their families
attended the reception for the exhibit, which runs through April 16th at the Long Island Museum in Stony Brook. “We are very proud of our students,” said Nussbaum. “It was great to see them so excited to be in a special art show.”

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with members of the Town Board and the Department of Human Services to host the Town’s 28th annual Women’s History Month Celebration. The popular event was held at Walter G. O’Connell High School in Copiague and highlighted this year’s theme, “Honoring Trailblazing Women in Labor & Business.” Judge Debra UrbanoDiSalvo, Amityville Village Justice, served as Mistress of Ceremonies for the celebration while Laura Douglas-Robinson, Senior Executive Leader at Avon,
delivered the event’s keynote address. This year’s ceremony also featured live musical performances by vocalist Alleyah Kate, the Roseland School of Dance, and Copiague High School’s Madrigal Choir. Kyle Jefferson, a student at Deer Park’s Robert Frost Middle School, was recently recognized by the New York Knicks basketball team as one of two recipients of the 2017 Dave DeBusschere Award. The award honors students who excel in the classroom, the basketball court and the community, and who
exemplify the character of late Knicks basketball legend Dave DeBusschere. On March 29th, Jefferson and his parents attended a Knicks game at Madison Square Garden, where DeBusschere’s sons presented him with the award at center court. He will also be given the opportunity to attend a Jr.
Knicks basketball clinic with Robert Frost’s team. Jefferson, a true scholarathlete, plays on both the Frost and Saints Cyril and Methodius Church basketball teams as well as two football leagues and a lacrosse team, all while maintaining an A average in school. A member of Frost’s National Junior Honor Society, he was recognized as the school’s Student of the Month for February. He serves as a volunteer for numerous community organizations and events, including Kids Adopt a Shelter, Ascension Lutheran Church, the Islip Public Library, the Deer Park Community Association’s annual fall festival and the Wyandanch Plaza Association’s National Chocolate Day festival. (the mesh) that is placed under the urethra to support it like a hammock. The purpose is to prevent the urethra from excess descent with the increased abdominal pressure. Mesh has been used successfully for a number of years internationally with approximately 80-90% satisfaction rates. Potential complications of mesh are well known. It needs to be thoroughly under the vaginal tissues so it does not erode into the vagina. Erosions have occurred even years after the placement of the sling. These problems are treatable. Women who suffer from embarrassing leakage need not suffer in silence. Great success and thousands of satisfied women have had their lives improved after surgical repair. The urge type incontinence refers to the inability to get to the toilet on time when the urge to void begins. There are many causes for this type of incontinence. It may vary from one incontinent episode a day to multiple accidents, daytime and nighttime frequency. The leakage tends to be of larger amounts as the bladder starts to empty despite trying to stop it. This type of leakage is not not treatable with surgery like the stress type. Decreasing the amount of coffee, tea, colas, alcohol and spicy food may help to some degree. Voiding more frequently, prior to the urge may prevent the accident. Medications are often used. The purpose of

Leakage of urine is not normal but is very common in women. In most cases the problem can be improved. There are a number of reasons why women may have problems with their bladder control but the two most prevalent types are stress incontinence and urge incontinence. Stress incontinence is when some loss of urine takes place at the same moment as the cough, laugh or exercise. It is related to the increased abdominal pressure which puts excess pressure on the bladder. It is common in women in the years after childbirth but may also be a problem for cigarette smokers, people with asthma and chronic constipation. It may also be hereditary. The repeated straining movement of the cough or pushing to have a bowel movement weakens the connective tissues. Treatment options include pelvic floor exercises to try and strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor, biofeedback and surgery. When the leakage is substantial surgery is usually the best course of action. Surgery for stress incontinence has been greatly improved in the last few years with the development of slings. In the past, the surgery required abdominal incisions with a hospital stay and prolonged recovery. Today the procedures have become ambulatory with quick recovery and very good success rates. The sling refers to a piece of material

Legislator Kennedy held her third annual Suffolk County Woman’s Power Breakfast today, hosted at the Holiday Inn Express in Stony Brook. Featuring elected officials, community leaders and business leaders, the breakfast was an opportunity for local women to meet and discuss challenges facing women in the private and public sector today, as well as resources that can help them overcome these challenges. While networking was the primary goal of the event, the breakfast also featured a panel of elected officials that included Islip
Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, Brookhaven Councilwoman Valerie Cartwright, Islip Councilwoman Mary Kate Mullen, Babylon Receiver of Taxes Corinne DiSomma, Huntington Receiver of Taxes Esther Bivona, Suffolk County Clerk Judy Pascal, and Suffolk County Alliance of Chambers Chair Gina Coletti. The panel discussed their experiences as women in public service and gave advice and resources for women seeking to overcome adversity. Afterwards, Legislator Kennedy met with the other attendees, discussing their individual experiences

Granite requires special care and attention because it’s a natural stone. Here are a few tips to help you protect your investment: • Seal your countertops: According to the Marble Institute of America, an industry group, granite countertops should be sealed so that the stone is more resistant to dirt and spills. Check with the manufacturer or retailer about the best kind of sealer to use on food preparation areas. • Be careful what

The American Red Cross and its Home Fire Campaign partners are asking everyone across the country to take the following two simple steps to help decrease the risk of home fires and save lives: 1. Create and practice your 2-minute drill. Have at least two ways to escape from every room. Select an outside meeting spot at a safe distance where family members can meet. Discuss the plan with everyone in the household and practice it until everyone can escape in less than two minutes. Conduct practice drills at
least twice a year. 2. Install and maintain smoke alarms. Working smoke alarms halve your risk of dying in a home fire. Put them on every level of your home, including inside and outside bedrooms. Test the alarms monthly and change the batteries when needed. Never disable a smoke alarm. Teach children what an alarm sounds like and what to do if they hear one.
