555 By: Jamie Lynn Ryan 555 columns, 556 with this one. Ten years, soon to be eleven. Such are the minimilestones of my journalistic career here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Throw in a dozen or so “In Season” columns from our South Bay’s Seasons™ Magazine, and you have quite the collection of musings on life from me (with the occasional contribution from Buddy the Betta) over the last decade or so of my life. Impressive? Sure, if you enjoy what I have to say. Voluminous? Without a doubt. I have often considered the prospect of sifting through these past essays and compiling some sort of anthology – the highlights, the
lowlights, a snapshot of those topics that seemed worthy of putting pen to paper, or finger to keyboard, as the case may be. Quite the undertaking, and perhaps only for my own self-satisfaction, but a worthy effort nonetheless. Maybe throw in a few photographs to accent the project… weave in a bit of narrative to segue from one chapter to the next… Upon briefly scanning through some of the titles, I see a selection of heartfelt profiles of friends and family members who have left an imprint on my life, a few humorous “rants about nothing” on those dayto-day occurrences that seem to plague us all, a fair share of seasonal and holidaythemed edit, a handful of monumentally exciting
events (I got to interview Don Mattingly??) and… well, a host of columns that can only be categorized as “other,” those musings that delve into the philosophical, my own analysis of life as we know it. A bit uneven? Surely. Representative of my frame of mind at any given moment during the course of the last 10-going-on-11 years? Absolutely. And isn’t that what it’s all about? The opportunity to capture a moment in time, by any means, and transmit it to the public, through any medium, is a priceless one. How lucky I am to have had the chance to do so. 555 times. And counting. Stay tuned for that book. And Buddy’s, of course.

Eighth graders at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park worked in teams to solve the question: “How do fluids exert pressure?” Student teams were given simple materials such as cotton balls, towels, tape, styrofoam donuts, sheets of plastic, popsicle sticks, cotton swabs and a tarp. They were then tasked with working together to design
and construct a carrier that would prevent an egg from breaking when dropped from a pre-determined height. The carrier needed to withstand numerous drops and students could only use the materials provided to complete their projects. Each of the teams did a fantastic job of creating unique and effective carriers for their eggs. Moreover, they had a ton
of fun and showcased their “egg-cellent” teamwork skills, all while soaking in valuable lessons on the concepts of momentum, force and energy. Four of the five teams were successful in completing repeated egg drops with no breakage and all seemed to enjoy the scientific process. Go, Science!
Taking on Pi Math team members Steven Cayea, Gianna Giffone, James Hope, Matthew Rosati and Anthony Wineberger from Deer Park’s Robert Frost Middle School were chosen by the school to participate in the annual Suffolk County MoMathlon at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The March 14th event, sponsored by the National
Museum of Mathematics, was held on Pi Day, when mathematicians celebrate the irrational number found by dividing the circumference of any circle by its diameter. Working together, individually and with students from other Suffolk County private and public schools, the Frost five were exposed to a variety of math questions
and given many strategies to complete the given task. “The MoMathlon gives students an opportunity to learn and meet new friends while having fun with numbers,” said John Watson, Deer Park’s curriculum associate for math and business. “Congratulations to all of the participants for working while enjoying Pi Day and math.”

Heroes of the Game Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Legislator Steve Stern, the Long Island Ducks and New York Community Bank jointly announce the return of the Heroes of the Game program for the second consecutive season, which will publicly honor local veterans and active duty service men and women during all home games this season. More than 125 local veterans and active military personnel were honored during the 2015 season. “Suffolk County is home to nearly 100,000 veterans,
the largest veterans population in New York State. It is our obligation to provide our local heroes with the services they need once they come back home,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “The Heroes of the Game program is a wonderful way for thousands of local baseball fans each game to learn about our heroes’ stories and as a way to say thank you to our veterans for the sacrifices they have made to protect our freedom.” “The partnership between Suffolk County
and the Long Island Ducks to honor our veterans is a home run,” Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern said. “Our veterans are not only the Heroes of the Game, they are our heroes every day and it is an honor for all of us to say thank you in such a meaningful way.” “The Ducks are pleased to be able to continue this terrific program,” said Ducks President/ GM Michael Pfaff. “The feedback we received from fans, veterans, sponsors and the community has been tremendously positive and we’re looking

As the public health crisis continues to adversely impact a multitude of Long Island families and communities, LICADD is proud to offer 24 hour assistance to those individuals and families in need of support, counseling and referrals to quality healthcare facilities for a host of treatment options for substance use disorders. LICADD’s full-service substance abuse hotline will serve as what officials called a lifeline to residents battling drug addiction, which lawmakers have been struggling to address across Long Island for years. To get there, the county teamed up with community partners in the substance abuse field
to allow residents to call to get screenings, referrals and follow-ups. The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence will operate the 24-hour hotline and direct callers to those resources. Providing a single phone number to call for a myriad of resources and services is key to assisting those who are battling addiction and their families, officials said. “Like many places in this country, Suffolk County is facing an opioid epidemic of historic proportions,” County Executive Steve Bellone said in a statement. “We need to tackle this epidemic on all fronts - including prevention, treatment and law enforcement.” Bellone said his administration has made it a top priority to “explore and launch new, evidence-based tools” to help address the region’s fight against heroin and opioid use. “The creation of a local 24/7 hotline is now another tool in our arsenal to assist those who are battling opioid and heroin addiction and their
families,” he said. The hotline will become live by April 1st, Bellone said, and the Suffolk County health department will provide oversight and analyze data to monitor its effectiveness and identify trends and emerging issues in the community. LICADD recognizes that individuals and families in crisis with SUD require immediate and quality support, assessment and referrals 24 hours a day. LICADD clinicians are hypervigilant in our professional understanding that the time to seek treatment is “now”! Often times “now” happens after 9pm and before 8am, including weekends and holidays. The window of opportunity where an individual and/or family is willing to seek support and treatment if of a finite duration, and without immediate consultation, that window of opportunity closes under the pathology of denial, obsession and fear which often defines substance use disorders.
