wo visiting artists and instructors – Vincent Osmeris of LIU Post on March 14th and Ricki Weisfelner of Farmingdale School District on March 15th – visited Deer Park’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School for a double “Day of Clay.” The guest artists led the fifth grade in a clay lesson, providing the students with a start to ceramics through an exercise in texture exploration, using the school’s kiln.

It came as no surprise when the Deer Park School District recently appointed its technology powerhouse, Chris Kauter, as the new district administrator for instructional technology. He replaces Anastasia Tzortzatos. A Sayville resident and graduate of Deer Park’s Class of 1998, Kauter has
The Peace Pole Project is an international initiative, spreading a worldwide message of peace to unify people of all nationalities and languages through these tall symbols of hope. Moore’s ENL students sang and spoke in their native languages during the half-hour ceremony in the school gymnasium, which was attended by classmates, teachers, central administration
and parents. The children placed flags on the stage representing 15 different world nations before the event came to a close. “The purpose of the ceremony is to alert students to the importance of peace and to bring together a diverse body of students in this mission,” said ENL teacher Ashley Lovett.

IT Admin taught at Deer Park High School for over a dozen years, mainly focusing on social studies. In 2013, he was one of only 50 worldwide educators selected by Google to attend the prestigious Google Teacher Academy in Chicago, leading to his status as a Google Certified Teacher and trainer. Last year, with funding from a $5,000 STLE teacher effectiveness grant, Kauter’s leadership came to the fore in his new position as a part-time instructional technology coach. He was so successful in helping teachers integrate technology in their classrooms in a meaningful way, that despite the conclusion of
English as a New Language students at Deer Park’s May Moore Primary School dedicated a “peace pole” to the school in a March 11th ceremony, unveiling the large pole with the phrase “May Peace Prevail on Earth” written in all 11 languages spoken by the students – Bangla, Chinese, English, Gujarati, Haitian Creole, Persian, Spanish, Tagalog, Turkish, Urdu and Vietnamese.

the grant, the Board and administration decided to expand Kauter’s role to a full-time K-12 instructional technology coach, and then as district administrator for IT. Using software and programs to enhance the learning process, and providing teams of teachers with professional development and helping them create projects for their students’ benefit, Kauter proved invaluable in the district’s continued efforts to move technology in the classrooms further into the 21st century. season, Vicky joined us for the first time in winter track and has been injury free. After waiting for so long, we now see what she is capable of, and she’s just getting started. Vicky not only has grown as an athlete, but as a person. She always carries herself with confidence, but she is humble. She has a tremendous respect for the sport and knows what it takes to be the best.” Major has not yet decided on a major or chosen a college, but has been offered an academic scholarship to Iona College, and is also speaking with Adelphi University, Hofstra University, Pace University and St. John’s University. “We will most definitely miss Vicky after this year,” said Petti. “She’s a great kid and is irreplaceable. She changed the face of this track program and became our ambassador to the sport. She deserves this long-awaited recognition.”

Postscript By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I want to begin by expressing my sincere appreciation to all those readers who took the time to reach out in the last week to express condolences on the passing of my “Pal,” to relate to the sense of loss, to the closeness felt… but, mostly, to comment on how fortunate I was to share such a special bond with my grandfather and develop so many wonderful memories through the years. It is with that sentiment that I choose to pick up this week’s column. Rather than dwell in the sadness, I choose to reflect with a smile – on the love, the laughter, the photo albums, the video footage, the small possessions that embody much larger stories –
all the components that make pile of “unattributed” wisdom up a life well-lived. we all love to call upon from time to time. No matter the Family is precious. We source, the message is clear. know this, of course; but And so, we smile. We reflect. I think we tend to forget just how meaningful those We shed a happy tear here and connections are from time to there. But, most importantly, time. Only when called upon we remember. Deer Park High School senior Victoria Major won the Suffolk County Section XI championship for high jump on February 10th, and was honored as an All-League and All-County athlete at the Winter Track & Field All-County Dinner on March 2nd at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook. She also finished ninth in the county in the 300-meter dash and in the top 50 in the 55-meter dash. Following the county tournament, Major advanced to the Long Island Elite Meet on February 27th, held at St. Anthony’s High School in Huntington Station, where she competed against the top high jumpers from and Suffolk County. Her
season-best jump of 5 feet, 5 inches beat out the No. 1 seed and earned her the Long Island title. Most recently, she competed in the New York State Track and Field Championship Meet at Cornell University in Ithaca on March 5th, where she battled the state’s best jumpers to finish in fourth place overall. Major, the current captain, has been on Deer Park’s girls track team since she was a freshman, and has succeeded in spite of untimely injuries. “We knew Vicky was a special athlete when she came to us three years ago,” said her coach, James Petti. “She won the freshman championship in the 100-meter dash and the high jump in 2013. Unfortunately, Vicky was plagued by injuries to her ankles and knees over the years, and it hampered her ability to be the best she could be. As a coach, each year I would see Vicky struggle with her rehabbing injuries, yet she always persevered and was always our top performer by season’s end. This

Town of Babylon Councilman Tom Donnelly recently attended the Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony for Joseph Rosati of Deer Park. The Eagle Scout is the highest distinction bestowed upon members of the Boy Scouts

Visualizing Volume To help fifth-graders at Deer Park’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School gain a deep understanding of volume, teacher Jason Bond and math specialist Fran Marotta engaged students in a design-building activity.
Children constructed three-dimensional sculptures using interlocking cubes and then calculated each design to find its total volume. The students learned to visualize, plan, analyze shape and structure, draw conclusions and calculate
volume. “This hands-on interactive lesson really helped students understand volume beyond a standard formula and the true meaning of ‘cubic’ units,” said Marotta.

The Town of Babylon Department of Human Services recently hosted its 27th Annual Women’s History Month celebration, titled “Working to Form a More Perfect Union: Honoring Women in Public Service & Government.” Amityville Village Justice Debra UrbanoDiSalvo served as Mistress of Ceremonies for the function. The event honored several members of the community and featured a keynote address from Suffolk County Legislator Kate Browning. Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer was joined in attendance by Town Councilwoman Jackie Gordon, Town Clerk Carol Quirk, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey, New York State
with a start to ceramics through an exercise in texture exploration, using the school’s own PTAsupplied kiln. “Both Vincent and Ricki were amazing, sharing their talents with the kids, who were so excited and proud of what they created,” said art teacher Laurie Schwartz. “It was also beneficial to me to be able to learn different skills with clay from these two
