I’m always looking for signs. Except when I’m not, which makes them all the more poignant and undeniable. Case in point, the one year anniversary of my grandfather’s passing recently came and went on March 13th, bringing with it the anticipated mix of sadness and reflection that these milestones tend to create. Back on that day, one year ago, shortly after learning the devastating news, I stared blankly out my sliding glass door at the tree directly in front of my apartment, only to be met
with the gaze of one solitary robin. Sitting. Staring. I must have stood at that door for a solid half hour, mesmerized by this tiny bird, alone in a barren tree, his eyes fixated on me. Was it a sign? Was it just a matter of ironic timing? Who knows… I chose to find solace in the serenity of the moment, comfort in the quiet. A month later, we discovered a nest of four perfect robin’s eggs at my grandparents’ house, the first of its kind in that backyard, ever. We marveled at how it seemed to literally drop out of the sky at a most opportune moment, manifesting out of thin air,
a precious symbol that life does, in fact, go on. Fast forward to last week. I ran quickly to the store for a bunch of roses to bring to the cemetery, knowing that the impending “blizzard” and freezing temperatures would most likely destroy them in a matter of hours. As I headed back to the car, a sign for birdseed caught my eye. And then, it hit me. Suddenly, I heard chirping. Loud, incessant chirping. I turned around, searching for the source… and there it was, a single, solitary robin, sitting on the top of the pile. Some signs, you just don’t see coming.

Celebrating Black History Month Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer and the Department of Human Services recently hosted the Town’s 29th annual Black History Month Celebration at Amityville Memorial High School. This year’s event was titled “The Crisis in Black Education,” and featured a variety of performances as well as local honorees. Deborah Payton-Jones, who serves as both the Volunteer Coordinator at the Fashion Institute of Technology and the Election Inspection Coordinator for the Suffolk County Board of Elections, was the Mistress of Ceremonies for the event. A keynote address was delivered by Gina Talbert, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction at the
Wyandanch School District. Also in attendance were Town Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Town Councilwoman Jackie Gordon, Suffolk County Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey, and representatives from the offices of State Senators Phil Boyle and John Brooks. Soccer Stars Sign Deer Park High School seniors Kristen DeBiase, Carli Fonseca and Taylor Maucere, all integral members of the school’s 2016 League IV champion soccer team, signed National Letters of Intent on March 6th. DeBiase, who played center-midfielder during her Falcons career, will play forward at Wingate University in North Carolina. She has earned All-State, All-County, League Player of the Year and All-Long Island second team honors with Deer
Park, and also played for the Brentwood Rush club team. “The coach made me feel welcome, and I loved the weather there,” said DeBiase of her choice of Wingate, where she plans to major in psychology. Fonseca, who plays defense, signed with Molloy College in Rockville Centre, where she will major in education. She played for the EMSC Hotspurs club team and Western New York State travel team in addition to the Falcons.
“My mom went there, and it’s close to home,” she said of picking Molloy. Maucere, a forward, will attend West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, West Virginia. She earned AllConference honors with the Falcons, and played for the national and state champion Albertson Fury club team. “I fell in love with the campus, and it felt like home,” said Maucere of her selection of Wesleyan.

The Deer Park School District recently announced two new administrative positions in special education. Brian Norton was named district administrator of secondary special education, while David Renahan was named district administrator of elementary special education. “The special education position was split in order to better serve the students, their parents and the teachers as well,” said James Cummings, Deer Park’s assistant superintendent for pupil personnel services.

Supportive Housing Expands Options for Community Living, Inc. has been selected by the New York State Office of Mental Health to receive two awards to provide housing and supportive services for adults recovering from mental illness. Funding under these contracts is more than $1.3 million annually, and it will assist 85 adults with their housing and service needs. One award will allow the agency to establish
22 new beds for Suffolk County residents in need of supportive housing. The second award will allow Options to assume the operation and management of 63 established beds/ units. The majority of the existing units are occupied and include both Nassau and Suffolk County locations. “We are thrilled to receive these two awards,” stated Yolanda RobanoGross, executive director.
