The Charity of the Month for March is: Birthday Wishes!
Birthday Wishes is an organization whose mission is to provide birthday parties to children experiencing homelessness. They improve and empower the lives of homeless children and their families by providing joy, play and hope through the magic of a birthday party.
Birthday Wishes of Long Island began having parties in only one shelter. Today they work with 80 shelters/transitional housing programs in Nassau and Suffolk counties, and each month they give more than 120 children a birthday celebration! Every birthday child receives supplies to have a party with all the children that live in the shelter such as; juice boxes, cake or cupcakes, candles, decorations, paper goods and a wonderful bag of presents to open! Birthday Wishes serves children ages 1-19.
As teens are their fastest growing demographic that they serve, they are always in need of teen gifts. They are currently looking for gifts for children of the ages 14-19. They love to throw birthday parties for the children they serve, which reflects a birthday party that would be thrown for any child anywhere. Therefore, please make sure your donations are brand new only! Below is a list of gift items that they are seeking: For Boys: Basketballs, Axe Gift Sets, String Bags, Ear Buds, Water Bottles, Adult Size Socks, Large or X-Large Hoodies. For Girls: Nail Polish, Manicure Sets, MakeUp, Make-Up Bags, Perfume, Adult Coloring Books With Markers, Body Wash and Lotion. One way is to attend or sponsor their 2nd annual Food, Wine, & Wishes Event on March 20th at Appliance World of Huntington, located at 414 New York Ave. There will be wonderful raffle prizes and food tastings. Additionally, Birthday Wishes is looking for people to volunteer their time as drivers or party coordinators. Here are just two of the happy examples: • Lydia spent months wondering if her daughter Odette was alive. Conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo forced Lydia to seek asylum in the U.S., leaving her far away from her family and with a heavy heart. With the help of the Red Cross, Lydia located her daughter and sent her a message through the Restoring Family Links (RFL) program. Odette responded to her mom— she was indeed alive. “I don’t know how the Red Cross managed to connect me with someone who I thought was dead. There was no other way for me to talk to her. There was no

I Miss You Friend I am suddenly struck with a memory of an old friend who passed away in 2007 from Cystic Fibrosis. She took up residence at the forefront of my mind just as I had the thought, “Okay, time to write this week’s column.” I met Brenna in 1991 at a theatre arts summer camp in upstate New York. Five of us girls shared a dorm that summer, and one of my roommates was an Irish Catholic girl from New Hampshire, named Brenna. We were the same age and both loved acting and the arts, but culturally we were worlds apart. I, a Jewish girl from Long Island with olive skin and dark curly hair, was fascinated with her strawberry blonde pin straight hair, bright green eyes and rosy complexion. She also had a husky-yet-feminine voice (think vintage Kathleen Turner). Brenna was a true force of nature; the kind of person you never forget once she’s touched your life. Our friendship developed at summer camp but lasted for years afterwards. I made trips to visit her and her family in New Hampshire and she made a
couple of trips to New York City where we would go to places like FAO Schwartz, her favorite Irish pub and St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Brenna was born with Cystic Fibrosis (or CF, as it is known in the Cystic Fibrosis community), but she was so dynamically alive that I couldn’t conceive of her succumbing to her illness. She never let her disease define or diminish her. In fact, shortly after marrying at the age of twenty-five she wanted to have a baby. Brenna’s doctor warned her against it. I’ll never forget her recounting the story to me after she’d given birth to her son, Harrison. “My doctors said, ‘there’s no way you’re going to be able to get through nine months of pregnancy and childbirth,’ and I said, ‘oh, no? watch me!’” That was Brenna. She knew she was on limited time, and therefore she was determined to live her life with zest, and to make every day count. At some point she and I lost touch, and in 2012 I decided to Google my old friend to reconnect. What I came across
was a memorial website set up in her honor. What I hadn’t known throughout our friendship (or perhaps hadn’t wanted to) was that the life expectancy for CF patients is typically 30 years. Brenna had lived to the age of 32. I am in touch with Brenna’s sister, Meghan, and her widower, Jason, to this day. I get to watch Brenna’s son grow up through Facebook photos and videos as he is surrounded by loving extended family. Beyond that, I love to read and re-read Brenna’s favorite poem, The Station, by Robert J. Hastings. It reminds me so much of her. Here is my favorite passage from that poem: “So stop pacing the aisles and counting the miles. Instead, swim more rivers, climb more mountains, kiss more babies, count more stars. Laugh more and cry less. Go barefoot oftener. Eat more ice cream. Ride more merry-go-rounds. Watch more sunsets. Life must be lived as we go along. The Station will come soon enough.” I miss you friend.

To recognize 2-1-1 Advocacy Week, Brendan Cunningham, Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre’s Chief of Staff, met with representatives from 2-1-1 Long Island to discuss the importance of this free and confidential resource, available 24/7, that provides crucial information to Long Islanders in need of assistance. The 2-1-1 Long Island Call Center is staffed by trained information specialists 24 hours a day, seven days a week who connect callers to critical and available resources such as shelter, food or utilities, as well as nonemergency services including job training, counseling, and education. Call Center services are
offered in more than 200 languages and 2-1-1’s searchable online database at www.211LongIsland. org includes detailed information on nearly 10,000 nonprofit and governmental programs. 2-1-1 Long Island is a partnership between United Way of Long Island and Middle Country Public Library. “While it’s evident that 2-1-1 Long Island is being utilized by many, it’s so important that all of my constituents know that this resource is available to them for a wide range of needs, from help with landlords to emergency food programs,” said Assemblywoman JeanPierre. “I would like to thank United Way of Long Island for investing in the safety of our communities by providing this critical service.” “United Way is grateful to have had the opportunity

Myths And Facts About Recycling Cartons (NAPSI)—Recycling is one of the easiest ways the average person can help the environment. Not only does recycling prevent items from ending up in landfills, it reduces the amount of raw materials used to make new products. Here are some myths and facts about recycling commonly used food and beverage cartons: Myth: Cartons can’t be recycled. Fact: Cartons are certainly recyclable. They can be turned into new products,
such as paper towels, tissues and writing paper. They can also be turned into environmentally friendly building materials, in a process that uses no water or chemicals. Myth: If a package doesn’t have a recycling logo on it, it’s not recyclable. Fact: What can and can’t be recycled varies by community and is primarily dependent on the recycling facility. Cartons can carry the standard “Please Recycle” logo under the
Federal Trade Commission’s green guidelines. It’s best to contact your community or check its website to find out what can and can’t be recycled. Myth: You have to put your recyclables in a plastic bag and then in your recycling bin. Fact: Plastic bags can jam up equipment at recycling centers, slowing everything down and potentially preventing recyclables from getting recycled. Instead, place materials loosely in
recycling bins or carts. Myth: You have to crush cartons and remove the caps and straws before recycling them. Fact: Just empty any remaining product. No crushing is required, and the caps can be left on. You may want to stuff the straws back into the carton to make sure they don’t become litter. Myth: Cartons have a waxy coating and therefore can’t be recycled. Fact: Food and beverage cartons don’t contain any
wax. Cartons are made mainly from paper with thin layers of plastic and, in some cases, aluminum. Myth: Cartons have multiple layers that prevent them from being recycled. Fact: The multiple layers in cartons are broken down during the recycling process. The paper is used to make new paper products and the aluminum or plastic can be used to generate energy or become binding. In some cases, the entire carton is used to make
building materials. Myth: Most places don’t accept cartons for recycling. Fact: Carton recycling is now available for 62 percent of U.S. households—more than 72.5 million homes— through curbside and dropoff programs.
