A perfectly positive P.S. I Love You Day was celebrated in Deer Park on Feb. 14, with the color purple used to symbolize love, acceptance, antibullying and suicide prevention. Students and staff at Deer Park High School, Robert Frost Middle School and John
F. Kennedy Intermediate School were encouraged to wear purple to show their support, purple ribbon was wrapped around trees by the school and notes with positive messages were posted on student lockers. Founded by West Islip teenager Brooke DiPalma, the event is held annually
on the second Friday of February. DiPalma visited Robert Frost this year to meet with the middle school’s student council and talk about why she started P.S. I Love You Day 10 years ago to honor her father, whose tragic suicide inspired the movement.

Ms. Schiavone, who was named the L’Oréal Paris 2019 National Woman of Worth, was recognized at the February 11 General Meeting of the Legislature in Hauppauge joined by her father, Rocco Schiavone who serves as President of the Board of the Directors, and members of her staff. She is a graduate of Walt Whitman High School. Brittany’s Baskets of
Hope fills baskets with baby essentials, handmade hats, blankets, a book titled “Babies with Down syndrome: A New Parents’ Guide” and a decorated onesie with celebratory phrases for families who have recently welcomed a baby with Down Syndrome. Her and her staff hand deliver them to local families in the tri-state area and ship them for out-of-state requests. More than 900 baskets have been prepared, bringing good wishes and cheer to families across the United States, and, with a recent request from Alaska, her baskets have now delighted families in all 50 states. In recognition of her innovative initiative and dedication, Ms. Schiavone was named a 2019 Women of Worth by L’Oréal Paris in its National campaign and recognized as one of
its Top Ten Honorees from across the United States for her “outstanding work for exceptional causes.” She received thousands of public votes via the L’Oréal Paris website and was ultimately named the 2019 Women of Worth National Honoree. “Brittany Schiavone is a true inspiration. The NWS notes that the nearly equal hours of day and night results from a refraction of sunlight, or a bending of the light’s rays that causes the sun to appear above the horizon, even though its actual position is
below the horizon. In 2020, the spring equinox in the northern hemisphere occurs on March 19. While it’s easy to embrace the arrival of spring as a mere harbinger of warmer weather to come, the first day of spring also is a great time to pause and reflect on just how unique the equinoxes are.
