READ Month kicked off this spring throughout Deer Park’s elementary schools, emphasizing the value and enjoyment of reading books. At John F. Kennedy Intermediate School, READ Week began on March 1 with daily themes, from wearing jerseys for Sport Your Favorite Book Day and wearing sunglasses on a beach towel for Beach Party Day, to Flashlight Friday where students read books with a flashlight and the lights off. For the entire month, March Book Battle Madness is giving JFK’s teachers a chance to expose students to different books that they might not necessarily read in the classroom. March Book Battle Madness is

structured similarly to the basketball March Madness, with books competing against each other for the championship, based on student votes. At John Quincy Adams Primary School, members of Deer Park’s Board of Education and district office were invited to visit the school as guest readers. Each class at JQA enjoyed a special read-aloud – either in person or virtually – to share the love of reading and inspire students to read during Read Month. JQA also held a READ Race in conjunction with the theme of “On Your Mark...Get Set...Go Read!,” challenging each grade level to read and record their minutes. Staff members representing

each grade took part in a “race” to close out READ. As a whole, the school’s students read for 43,056 total minutes over the course of two weeks, with the second-graders reading for 16,622 minutes, first graders for 12,543 minutes and the kindergartners and pre-K students reading for 13,891 minutes. At May Moore Primary School, READ Month kicked off on March 2 with a virtual assembly with “Pete the Cat” author Eric Litwin. As a special treat for students, Pete the Cat himself visited classrooms and students were invited to dress in pajamas for afternoon milk and cookies.

New York Blood Center And Area Hospitals Launch Initiative To Increase Blood Donations

Area hospitals and academic medical centers including NYC Health + Hospitals, Northwell Health, NewYorkPresbyterian, Weill Cornell Medicine, Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Mount Sinai Health System, Montefiore Health System and Catholic Health Services of Long Island are joining forces with New

York Blood Center (NYBC) to increase blood donations. Temporary blood shortages are not uncommon during summer and winter holidays each year, but the COVID-19 pandemic has created a chronic shortage across the country that shows no sign of improving. This reality is particularly dangerous given the looming uncertainty

surrounding the pandemic’s trajectory over the course of this winter. New York’s healthcare system requires 1,500 donations each day to treat patients ranging from trauma victims to newborn babies and their mothers to cancer patients. Prior to the pandemic, donors could stop by community blood drives at convenient locations,

but nearly all high schools, colleges, offices and other community groups have had to cancel their blood drives due to COVID-19. Blood donors can now make appointments to visit donor centers, but donations are at just 65% of pre-pandemic levels - well below what is needed by hospitals and patients in our area. “The entire foundation

of the way people donate blood has changed. The convenience factor of walking down the hallway while at work, getting out of class or donating after religious services is gone. Instead, we have to rely on people taking the extra step of proactively seeking out a place to donate. So far, that isn’t happening at the level we need,” said Andrea H.

Cefarelli, Senior Executive Director of Recruitment & Marketing for New York Blood Center. “In normal times, announcing a blood emergency would create a short-term increase in blood donations, but this will not solve this particularly difficult shortage longterm. This is an incredibly challenging time for our communities.”

T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-proﬁt organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country and multiple wishes have being granted on Long Island recently! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. Recently, many Long Island residents had their wishes come true. Each week for the remaining weeks this month, I will feature wishes that were granted right here on Long Island, starting with Kathy W. Dorothy Delia is an 87 year old resident of West Babylon. She worked and volunteered for the Salvation Army in Ridegewood and Queens for over 20 years. Prior to COVID, she was very involved in her church by coordinating the prayer chain, greeting worshippers and helping at fundraisers and events. Dorothy desperately needed dental work, but because she lives on a ﬁxed income, she could not afford it on her own. She had been losing teeth and could only eat soft foods. She wished for dental work, which was granted! In February 2020, she got a new healthy smile! Many seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable

conditions. Granting a Twilight Wish can help change that! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. Please note, when going to grant a wish, this foundation takes all the necessary safety precautions. If you would like to get involved with The Twilight Wish Foundation, you can! Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar representatives present a check for $12,091 to David Fox, sergeant, United States Marine Corps Reserve and Nick D’Andrea, chief warrant officer 4, Toys for Tots Coordinator, on Wednesday, February 24. The funds were raised during Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar’s 22nd annual fundraising campaign in support of the Marine Corps Reserve Toys

for Tots program, which distributes new toys to as many underprivileged children as possible to provide a tangible sign of hope during the Christmas season. This year, Applebee’s also introduced its own “Tots for Tots” program, offering guests an additional way to donate by adding tater tots to any order for just $3, with each sale going directly to the organization. Since

its inception, Applebee’s locations owned and operated by Doherty Enterprises have raised $4.9 million through its Toys for Tots fundraising campaign to benefit local communities in Florida, Georgia, Long Island and New Jersey. In just 2020 alone, Toys for Tots distributed 20.2 million toys to 7.4 million children.

Deer Park HS Fosters Pride With Black History Posters As part of Deer Park High School’s Black History Month celebration, students – both virtual and in-person – created posters highlighting important figures in Black history. The posters were designed by members of the Black Student Union in collaboration with the

French and Spanish Honor Societies. The quotes featured on the posters were written in English, French and Spanish to promote diversity and inclusion as well as to enhance cultural awareness and understanding through student-created art. “The purpose of this

decorating campaign was to educate and empower students to learn more about influential African Americans and to foster a sense of pride in their school and learning community,” said social studies teacher Aleisha Forbes, the Black Student Union adviser.
