umber-crunching students at Deer Park’s John Quincy Adams Elementary School helped raise more than $8,900 to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as part of the school’s fifth annual Math-A-Thon program. The students completed Math-A-Thon Funbooks by solving math problems. Sponsors made donations based on how many problems and pages the students completed.

Long Ago & Far Away Time continues to march on, and those moments we so casually took for granted along the way become nothing more than a distant memory, relegated to the nostalgia pile, to be savored in the imagination only. The difference, though, is that these flashbacks are increasingly from not so long ago, mere years, rather than decades… yet they seem a lifetime away, just out of reach. It’s the little things, too, the laughs shared, the stories told, the impromptu gatherings, the gifts exchanged, the memories made. Whether with family members, friends, co-workers, even the occasional stranger, every moment is part of something
larger, a curve in the path – your path – of life. Every decision made, or not made; each chance encounter or outlined goal – all leads to the point we are currently at, for better or worse. How amazing to be able to foresee the consequences of our actions; but then, our choices would be far simpler, wouldn’t they? Gone would be the mystery, the spontaneity, the happy accidents that tend to occur along the way when you simply close your eyes and just let life take you by the hand. There are those who believe in destiny; and there are those who refuse to think we don’t have as much input in our affairs as any otherworldly force. Which is right? Who’s to say. The only indisputable fact is that everything does
happen for a reason. People come into our lives, or go, as the case may be; and we are better for it. Every chance meeting is a lesson in disguise, to be determined at a later date. In the meantime, we go on, as does time. Our world grows smaller as circumstances change our daily dynamics, and we are forced to adjust, whether we care to or not. The memories fade, and their significance wanes in the face of more urgent, pressing matters. But we should never forget… the people, the places, the roads taken – all have led to here and now. And one day, not so very far away, this, too, will be but a snapshot in the giant album of life. We had best preserve it from now.

Black History Month Black History Month, or National African American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. Eighth graders at Saints Cyril and Methodius School commemorated the month in a number of way, including a dramatic recitation of the poem “I
Am a Man: Ode to Martin Luther King, Jr.” by Eve Merriam. They also worked as a team to create and put on their play “A Protest for Peace” about the Montgomery, Alabama, Bus Boycott in 1955. The efforts of the boycotters proved worthwhile and by the end of the play, the buses were full again after a successful protest.

First graders then created their own Cats in Hats, did some Seussian brain-work on crossword puzzles, word searches and other fun activities. They honed their math skills and took part in the democratic process by taking a class vote and documenting their favorite books on a bar chart. Getting hands on
with Mrs. McGerald by making their own green eggs and ham in the classroom made the day even more delicious. And it was especially fun to incorporate some art and science in there, as the students rolled up their sleeves and dove into the color wheel, mixing blue and yellow food dye to create the green they needed for their special eggs!

N u m b e r- c r u n c h i n g students at Deer Park’s John Quincy Adams Elementary School helped raise more than $8,900 to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as part of the school’s fifth annual Math-A-Thon program. The students completed Math-A-Thon Funbooks
by solving math problems. Sponsors made donations based on how many problems and pages the students completed, or offered contributions of any amount they chose. The Math-A-Thon problems help the students become better at math, and the cause is a worthy
one. Over the past five years, JQA has raised more than $32,800 in total for St. Jude. “We are proud and happy to help children and their families at St. Jude,” said math lab specialist Marianna Grieco, who coordinates the Math-AThon.
Students at Deer Park’s May Moore Primary School couldn’t wait for their turn to enter the gymnasium for a fun session of fitness during the school’s annual iGames, held throughout the last week of February. Guided by physical
