At the time, my guidance counselor had informed my parents and I that all paperwork sent out from the administrative offices would name me as “approximately” first, a fact that I had never even thought to consider up until that very moment. I had always enjoyed school and had accumulated a collection of Honors and Advanced Placement classes
on my transcript by my senior year; but class rank was not something I had ever particularly focused my attention on. I knew it existed, obviously; but most colleges were more concerned with your overall GPA and SAT scores, not your comparison among a class of your peers. As I rounded the corner on that afternoon, en route to our “rotunda” outside the cafeteria, I was startled to find the principal seated there next to one of my friends. “Oh good, you’re here,” he said. Uh oh, I thought. My mind raced, trying to determine what I could have done to warrant this unexpected visit. Next to him, my friend had a sly smile on his face. What is this about? I couldn’t imagine. “I have some news,” he grinned, standing up and extending his hand in congratulations. “It’s official – you’re number one.” And there it was. Twelve years of hard work and
dedication, culminating in that moment, that handshake – and those five words. It was unforgettable, so much so that I chose to capture the instant in one of my college scholarship essays. The theme was “The Most Memorable Moment of My Life.” And it was; possibly, still is. The bell rang, signaling it was time to head to our next class. But I had something to do first. I raced over to the wall of payphones by our front entrance, digging for quarters as I ran through the hallway (remember, this was 17 years ago). My hands shaking, I excitedly dialed my home number. “Mom!” I practically squealed into the receiver. “Guess what???” Since then, that date has been ingrained in my mind. Each year, it comes and goes, bringing with it a smile as I recall all the happy memories of a moment that seems so fresh … and yet, so very, very long ago. Officially.

McCaffrey, kicked off the event with a pep talk to fire up the kids for the day. The athletes participated in drill work and then finished with game play against one another. Registration for the league is open until March 15th. The season will officially start on April 8th with games being played throughout the weekend.

Honored with Award Deer Park High School technology teacher Jeremy Ferrara was recently honored with the Bright Light Award by Suffolk ASSET. Ferrara, who is in his second year in Deer Park, currently teaches robotics, metals and a World of Technology course. He is working to incorporate programming and modern engineering approaches into his curriculum, and
is also in the process of rebuilding the district’s robotics program. Students in his classes are expected to design solutions to solve problems. “It is a pleasure to see someone so passionate about educating students on the practical uses of technology,” said Christopher Kauter, the district’s administrator of instructional technology. “Jeremy is focused on

Deer Park’s educators have met the challenges brought by the state’s recent move to an integrated co-teaching model of ENL instruction. More proficient learners are integrated into the mainstream classroom to be delivered language instruction with the support of two teachers, instead of one, while students who are newcomers still receive language services in the small group learning setting that best fits their needs. Ashley Lovett, the first-grade ENL teacher at May Moore Primary School, said, “The change has been really helpful for a lot of the kids who are ‘expanding’. They’re right on the precipice of exiting the program, so instead of me pulling them out and taking them out of learning content and literacy in their classroom, I push in and give them that little bit of support that they need, which ends up benefiting them greatly. Conversely, the students who are at the ‘entering/emerging’ level, who need a little more support, will see me in their classroom, and then they’ll also come to me for a quieter environment and more explicit language instruction.” “Our ENL teachers are able to adjust, pre-teach, or revisit and reinforce the concepts that are being taught to the entire class to help every student learn to their fullest potential,” said John Quincy Adams Primary School Principal Christopher Molinelli. Robert Frost Middle School ELA/ENL teacher Michelle Champlin said, “The most influential consequence that came from this shift was the way it changed my thinking.

HOMETOWN HEROES - Last month, two local veterans were honored by the Town of Babylon Teamsters City Employees Union Local 237 as “Hometown Heroes” for their accomplishments and service both here and abroad. Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilwoman Jackie Gordon and Councilman Tom Donnelly attended a ceremony held at VFW Post 2912 in Wyandanch for Town of Babylon residents William Hart and Michael Oakley. Hart served in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean War. Oakley served in Vietnam as a United States Army Paratrooper and received the Purple Heart for combat wounds he suffered on the battlefield. Supervisor Schaffer commended William and Michael for their service to our nation, and both men were honored with Certificates of Special Recognition.
