This Vegetarian Reuben Sandwich is a fun take on the traditional Jewish-style favorite, but swaps out fatty corned beef for stir-fried veggies!

Remove swiss cheese covered bread and plate the slices, with each slice facing up. Spread one or two tablespoons of Thousand Island Dressing onto each slice. Scoop sauerkraut onto each slice above dressing. Lastly, scoop drained veggie mixture onto bread and close sandwich.
Preparation Combine diced portobello mushrooms, spinach leaves and sliced onion into a frying pan that has 1/4 cup water at the bottom. Trun on high until stove gets going. Then reduce heat to low

The Joy Animals Bring Does anything else even need to be said? Animals bring us so much joy, unconditional love, centeredness and clarity. Growing up, my parents were “not animal people” as they would often remind me at the mere mention of wanting a dog. I never experienced the joy and responsibility of having a pet when I was growing up. As a result, it just wasn’t on my radar as a kid, or even in my early twenties. At the age of twenty-nine, I found myself newly single, living in New York City and yearning for something or someone to care for other than myself. Without overthinking it, I adopted a two month old Shih Ztu and brought him home. With no idea of how to take care of a dog, I stumbled into a pet shop where I was loaded down with puppy food, vitamins, wee wee pads, a bed, a brush, food/water bowls and just about every other accoutrement you can think of. I can remember the first time I let this pup run loose in my tiny studio apartment. He was a ball of energy; a little white pouf ball of love as he snuggled up close in my
lap. I named him Francis Albert after Frank Sinatra, of course, which later incarnated to Frankie. Frankie was my first official family member. Not the family I was born into, but the family I would create on my own. He was there before my marriage and before my son. At one point in time, it was just me and Frankieboy. When my son was born, we hemmed and hawed about how Frankie may react to a new baby in the house. Would he behave? Would we have to worry? From the moment we brought our son home from the hospital, Frankie took on the role of pseudo-nanny (yes, like in Peter Pan); watching over the crib, alerting us when the baby was crying, and gently laying down next to our newborn son when he took his naps. It was astonishing; even more so, since Frankie-boy was not exactly known for exemplary behavior. In fact, he flunked out of dog obedience school. True story. As my son grew, it was so much fun to watch the two of them play together and bond. Rolling in the grass, playing ball or fetch, and
running around the house or the yard. It would always bring a smile to my face. Now, at fourteen, Frankie is getting on in years as my son is getting stronger and stronger and hitting his stride. I know there will come a time when Frankie is no longer with us, and it is hard to imagine. We still keep him running for exercise and we love him up as much as we can. I will always be grateful to him for teaching me how to care for another living being back when it was just me and him. These days, there is another dog in the fold, our Pitbull mix, Boris. To see this little Shih Ztu and large Pitbull get on together is a riot. They vacillate between rivalry and playfulness. Add my two favorite horses, Kingston in Melville, New York, and Lucky the beautiful Arabian, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, into the mix and I just can’t imagine a life without animals around me. I am so glad that my son is growing up experiencing the joy that animals bring.

“Helping Both Ends of The Leash” Paws of War is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that trains and places shelter dogs to serve and provide independence to our U.S. military Veterans who suffer from the emotional effects of war. In turn, each V e t e r a n can experience the therapeutic and unconditional love that only a companion animal can bring! Since 2014, Paws of War has supported over 100 Veterans with service dogs rescued from kill shelters.

They will then consider your rescued dog for their program once they have received all the information you can provide. You can also donate to Paws of War to help them carry out their mission. Individuals can donate on their website or by mail. There is truly no donation amount that is too small. They would not be able to carry out their mission of helping both ends of the leash without the generosity of their supporters. All donations are taxdeductible.
This organization relies heavily on devoted volunteers to continue providing their services. With such a small staff, Paws of War depends on the generosity of volunteers to support their fundraising efforts, to provide support to veterans and to help out with their dogs. Deer Park High School sophomore Jahi Tucker recently was ranked first in the nation in boxing in the 138-pound weight class after winning the 2018 USA National Boxing Championship in Salt Lake City, Utah. Pets’ affable nature and loving looks are enough for many people to welcome them into their homes, but the benefits of having a pet extends far beyond their cute appearances and loving temperaments.
Pets can help prevent loneliness Loneliness affects people of all ages, but it is particularly problematic among seniors. Older adults who may be isolated can benefit greatly from having a pet around. According to a study published in Aging & Mental Health, older adults who owned pets were 36 percent less likely to say they were lonely, compared to those who didn’t have an animal companion. Pets can save lives Pets can be trained to perform various tasks around the house and in the community. Rescue animals assist in finding people after natural disasters and have even been known to detect illness in some cases. Medical alert pets can help people with debilitating illnesses and assist physically impaired people with their everyday tasks.
Pets help lower allergy risks Keeping pets around your home can reduce a child’s likelihood of developing allergies by as much as 33 percent, according to a study by pediatrician James E. Gern, that was published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. People who are exposed early on in life to animals tend to develop stronger immune systems overall. Pets provide you with socialization opportunities A pet can be the common denominator you need to strike up new friendships and connect with others in your area. Whether you are walking around the neighborhood with your pet, taking part in a pet obedience class or interest group, or hanging out at the local dog park, pets can help their owners expand their social circles. Pets can help combat stress Talking to, playing with or simply stroking your pet can make stress easier to handle. A study from researchers at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo found that, when conducting a stressful task, people experienced less stress when their pets were with them. Various other studies and data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have found that having a pet around can lower
your blood pressure, ease anxiety, and may even help to lessen aches and pains. Pets provide unconditional love, which can be beneficial to someone facing depression or post traumatic stress disorder.

The National Sleep Foundation recently updated its sleep recommendations per age group to include categories “may be appropriate” and “not recommended.” This includes a range of hours that may be adequate for certain adults. Adults between the ages of 26 and 65 are advised to get seven to nine hours of sleep per evening. However, six hours or 10 hours also may be acceptable. People over the age of 65 need roughly seven to eight hours of sleep each night, though between five and six hours also may be fine. Generally speaking, anything under five hours is not recommended based on data reviewed by sleep experts.

Student Actors in “Noises Off” Deer Park High School theater students displayed their comedic talents and acting depth in their recent performance of the 1982 Michael Frayn play “Noises Off,” directed by Kristen Wallace with set direction from Alex Mesimeris. The hilarious production concerns a group of actors
preparing for their touring performance of a farce comedy called “Nothing On!” Most of the student actors played two roles: – the actor and the character the actor is playing in the play-within-a-play. The cast featured Jennifer Wern as Ms. Dotty Otley
and Mrs. Clackett, Oliver Curry as Lloyd Dallas and Director of ‘Nothing On!’, Louis Bianco as Mr. Garry Lejeune and Roger Tramplemain, Madi Steddick as Ms. Brooke Ashton and Vicki, Makenzie Caldone as Poppy and Assistant Stage Manager, Evan Hytner as
Mr. Frederick Fellowes and Philip Brent, Allie Costanza as Ms. Belinda Blair and Flavia Brent, Ciara Boltz and Isabella Serrano as Tammy Allgood and Stage Manager, and Alex Kellarakos as Mr. Selsdon Mowbray and Burglar. Francesca Bala, Karen Cochran and Samantha Petrizzo served as student directors. “Because it is an
extremely difficult undertaking for all who are involved, ‘Noises Off’ is rarely performed on a high school stage,” said Wallace. “I am extremely impressed with our students. The show pushed all of our artists to stretch their creative boundaries. In this ‘play within-a-play, about a play,’ the actors needed to study, develop and create two characters,
two personalities, and for some, two accents or voices. In addition, they needed to incorporate a great deal of physical comedy. As always, it was an extremely humbling experience to work with such amazingly talented actors, artists, directors and crew members who work tirelessly for our performing arts department.”
