Make sure your pet has a collar with identification. Snow can be disorienting for an animal and it is easy for them to get lost. Keep space heaters away from where animals can get to them. They provide a risk for the animal to get burned and for them to be knocked over, causing a fire. Dogs and cats can quickly experience frostbite (especially ears and paws) and hypothermia. Symptoms of hypothermia include Severe lethargy, decreased appetite, decreased responsiveness, low body temperature, discolored skin – especially red or black extremities. If you have chickens,

especially those with longer beards or combs, they are also susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia. Please use insulated walls and chicken coop heaters. If you use ice melt on your driveway or walkway, this can be extremely painful for dogs who walk through it. If your dog has walked on it, immediately wipe you their paws with luke warm water after. Please note, a good alternative is pet friendly ice melt! Also, pet boots can be great way to keep your dog safe. Lastly, bang on the hood of your car and check for cats who may have climbed under your car for warmth.

Most pets are not bred to withstand temperatures below freezing, and even those that are if not acclimated to the cold are at risk. When is it too cold? A good rule of thumb is, if its too cold for you to be outside without a coat, it’s also too cold for your pet. Below are some things to keep in mind regarding the safety of your pet: Never leave your dog unattended in a car. Cars turn into freezers very quickly. Never warm your car up in the garage, this can trap carbon monoxide and kill people and pets in minutes.

In addition, homeowners can expect to pay more when knocking down walls that contain ducts or electrical wiring. It also can be costly for homeowners whose homes are old to knock down walls. HomeAdvisor notes that the wall-removal process in old homes that contain lead paint or lathand-plaster walls is more intricate and may cost homeowners more money.

I felt a deep void when my wife of 53 years was gone but I had to move on somehow, so I searched the internet for ways I might help others going through the same hardship and happened across Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) in need of volunteer office help. Since I was a C.P.A., I thought I’d give it a try and three years later I’m a member of BBCC’s allvolunteer Board as well as it’s Treasurer. When I remember my late wife’s dark, frightening, cancer filled days, I cringe to think there are people in this world who must go through this nightmare alone - which is not the case in the Babylon Township because residents have BBCC. Most people BBCC help do not have a devoted healthy caregiver and many are in financial distress, so the variety of free services BBCC’s staff of angels provide is an inexpressible blessing.” If you too would like to get involved with the BBCC, you can. They are looking for volunteers to assist with virtual fundraising events and social media. Additionally, you can join the BBCC for virtual bingo on February 25th at 7:15PM. The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) was founded in 1993 by three friends who lived in Babylon. Determined to fight against breast cancer by raising awareness and educating women, the BBCC with their dedicated volunteers undertook the task of completing a demographic survey to ascertain the incidence of breast cancer in Babylon. From this, a volunteer driven grass-roots organization grew, which serves the entire Township of Babylon, including those with all gynecological cancers in addition to those with breast cancer. Today they provide direct patient services and support to help ease the burdens that breast and all gynecological cancers put on patients and their families/caregivers. In addition to assisting in the basic needs of those battling cancer, they also reach out to the community at large, providing educational programs to encourage healthier lifestyles, which would decrease the still very high instance of these cancers in our community. Please note, if you do not live in this township, you can still reach out to the BBCC to find out who in your area can be of help to you. The success of the BBCC is made possible primarily through their volunteers. This Coalition has three staff members, so volunteers are so important to them, volunteering not because they have the time, but because they have the heart to do so. Infectious diseases can strike at any time. Some of them cause relatively minor interruptions to daily life and often can resolve of their own accord when the body’s immune system mounts a successful defense. Other diseases can cause serious, even lifethreatening symptoms or spread rapidly, which makes it essential for medical professionals to help slow down or stop the transmission. What Is Herd Immunity? Herd immunity is a term that often arises in relation to infectious diseases. Herd immunity has taken on renewed significance as the world has been battling COVID-19, the novel coronavirus introduced in late 2019. Herd immunity, which is sometimes called “community immunity,” “population immunity” or “social immunity,” refers to the indirect protection from infectious

diseases that occurs when a large percentage of the population has become immune to that disease. If enough people are resistant to the cause of a disease, whether it is a bacteria or virus, that disease has nowhere to go and the spread stalls, according to WebMD. How Does Herd Immunity Occur? There are two ways that herd immunity can occur. The first is when resistance develops naturally when the body is exposed to the virus or bacteria. At this point, the immune system will produce antibodies to fight off the infection. After recovery, these antibodies are still circulating, and should exposure to the same disease occur again, the body can defend against another infection. Another way that herd immunity occurs is through vaccination. The Centers for Disease Control

and Prevention states that when the majority of people are vaccinated, it creates the same disease lockdown - fewer people get sick and fewer germs are able to spread from person to person. What’s more, even those who are not vaccinated, such as newborn babies or those who may not be able to get vaccinated due to chronic illnesses, will get some level of protection because the disease will not be spreading as readily within their communities. When Is Herd Immunity Reached? When enough of a population is immune to a pathogen it prevents further spread and herd immunity is apparent. Diseases are different and herd immunity is reached based on the pathogen’s reproduction number, or R0. Essentially this boils down to how contagious the pathogen in question

The NY State government has put detailed guidelines in place for all businesses, not just veterinarians. For example, medical facilities are required to screen patients before admitting them into the facility.

However right now we are required to follow guidelines issued by New York State that state “Curbside intake and pickup of animals should be used, wherever practical, to minimize the numbers of clients in waiting areas and exam rooms.”* Although that creates a lot of extra work for our staff, we are committed to complying with the NY State safety guidelines during the COVID-19 crisis, and to protect our client’s health and safety. *Exceptions can be made in situations like euthanasia

By July 2020, restrictions like curbside check-in have helped reduce the number of people diagnosed with COVID-19 in New York State down from over 10,000 a day to below 1,000. First graders in Christine Garcett’s class at Deer Park’s May Moore Primary School recently learned a lesson in kindness and “giving back” as they created handwritten letters and designed Valentine’s Day cards for senior citizens living at the Regal Heights Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Queens.

After reading the award-winning Matt De La Pena and Christian Robinson book “Last Stop on Market Street,” which describes a grandmother and her grandson showing kindness to those in need, the students then found a meaningful way to be compassionate by creating the cards and letters for the nursing home residents.

Garcett’s mother Kathleen, who lives in Regal Heights, visited the class during the lesson via Zoom and described what it’s like to live in a nursing home. “The Regal Heights residents will absolutely love receiving these cards, and my students learned that giving is the most reliable way to feel happy,” Garcett said.

Movie Lot Drive-In Returns For 2021 Season

Pop-Up Drive-In Movie Series Offers Fun & Safe Entertainment PLUS, FREE POPCORN FOR OPENING WEEKEND Back for the 2021 season, Movie Lot Drive-In, the popular drive-in movie experience which launched in 2020 to address the need for entertainment amid the Coronavirus pandemic, is back starting April 9, with a new season of blockbuster movies and safe entertainment options for Long Islanders. www. MovieLotDriveIn.com Long Island event producer Starfish Junction announced today that the Movie Lot Drive-In series will return for the 2021 season, showing movies on their giant 52-foot screen, the largest on Long Island. The 2021 season will be held at Westfield South Shore Mall located on Sunrise Highway in Bay Shore, NY, with the first weekend locked-in for April 9-10, 2021. The schedule will include movies perfect for date night, family fun night, girl’s night out, plus recently released movies, sing-alongs, classic films,

and more. To enhance the overall movie experience, special events surrounding movie weekend themes are being planned. Information on the schedule, safety guidelines, show times and ticket availability will be constantly updated and is available at www. MovieLotDriveIn.com. Movie Lot Drive-In, a pop-up drive-in movie experience, entertained nearly 7,000 cars and an estimated 25,000 people since it launched in May 2020 and “we’re happy to report that we will be back for the 2021 season starting in April and running through the fall months,” said Lauren Powers, Senior Director at Starfish Junction. “While movie theaters remain closed and restrictions on public gatherings are still enforced, we’re confident that people will continue to search for fun and safe things to do. We’re working hard to create a

great season with special events surrounding the movies being shown,” added Powers. Over 82% of the responders to a survey of the 2020 Movie Lot DriveIn attendees rated their experience as very good or excellent, many returning week after week, and an overwhelming number stated that they enjoyed the experience citing safety as an important factor in deciding to attend. The debut weekend, April 9-10, 2021, will have early and late show movies; including: FRI 4/9: The Croods: A New Age @ 7:45pm FRI 4/9: Scream @ 10:15pm SAT 4/10: Ghostbusters @ 7:45pm SAT 4/10: Impractical Jokers: The Movie @ 10:30pm Special Guests: Saturday, prior to the showing of Ghostbusters, ticketholders can meet

and greet the Long Island Ghostbusters troupe and pose for pictures with the Ghostbusters car. Ticketholders are encouraged to arrive early for safety-compliant meet and greet prior to the show. FREE POPCORN FOR EVERY CAR from STEW LEONARD’S Stew Leonard’s, the family-owned and operated fresh food store with Long Island locations in East Meadow and Farmingdale, is the official snack sponsor for the weekend. Each car will receive one prepackaged and safety-sealed bag of popcorn upon arrival (while supplies last). While movie theaters remain closed and entertainment options remain limited, Starfish Junction has positioned itself as one of the leaders here on Long Island, owning the biggest popup drive-in screen, 52-feet, available locally. There are a limited number of tickets

available for each showing. Tickets ($40 per carload), are on sale now for opening weekend. All tickets must be purchased online in advance at the MOVIE LOT website to adhere to the promise of contactless processing. Ticketholders are permitted to bring their own food and snacks to enjoy during the show. Attendees may also consider curbside pick-up from Five Guys, Panera, or Olive Garden, all conveniently located on the grounds of the Mall, before filing into the lot for the movie.
