Senior advocates are County representatives who come out into the community and assist seniors with information gathering, completion of eligibility or recertification applications and referrals to appropriate community agencies. Senior Advocates meet with interested and needy seniors aged 60 and over at regularlyscheduled times in specific locations throughout the community. Leaving a (Paw) Print I recently received an e-mail for an event listing from a teacher at my old high school, which sparked a conversation about how many years it’s been since I roamed those very hallways myself {approaching 18, nearly half of my lifetime} and how it might be nice to stop by to say hello to the relatively few teachers who remain there after all this time. Which got me to thinking… there was a time when my fellow alumni and I couldn’t wait to “visit” after we graduated, popping in every few months or so to see what was new and exciting in the world of Lindy High. As the years passed, college came and went, and we found ourselves employed in our various fields of study, these encounters became few and far between. We no longer related to those teenagers who breezed by on their way to class, nor did we

see high school as the center of the only universe we had ever inhabited. We now had the world before us, one that included days not marked by a bell schedule, job descriptions not dictated by a syllabus. Sure, there was the occasional visit to the old college campus now; perhaps a special “guest” speaking engagement to a group of soon-to-be grads about to embark on their own adventures into the great world of career exploration. But that was where the academic connection ceased. Fast forward nearly two decades past these formative years, and the nostalgia for simpler times has returned. Having the opportunity to reconnect with those friends and former classmates has taken on added significance as the years have passed. Several have left us far too soon; others’ lives have taken

them to the far reaches of the country, making the advent of social media a welcome - and perhaps the only - connection. But among the hundreds that we graduated with, there are also the dozens who still reside right here on Long Island, instantly reachable and available to reminisce at any time. It’s a comforting thought, that ability to pick up where you left off at a given point, to chat about old times and new pursuits, and to realize - with rare exception - that we are all dealing with the same daily struggle to find that sense of fulfillment that was promised to us all those years ago. Perhaps a visit to the old high school stomping grounds is in order; a “refresher course,” if you will, courtesy of the very place where it all began. HOPE CHILDREN’S FUND

“I believe all things happen for a reason” Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, said to me as we sat down to talk more in-depth about this international non-profit. It was not by coincidence that he and his wife crossed paths with Lawrence Hohler, retired Smithtown East HS teacher, and Joseph Kirima, primary school teacher in Kenya, to learn about what those two educators came together in hopes to form: a Kenyan orphanage. Hope Children’s Fund operates with the motto “Education Is Key” and for children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Mann explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family, hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. One of their favorites is of a young lady named Betty Gakii who entered their orphanage when she was little, did well and became a teacher, later got married and had children of her own, and now is the Administrative Assistant at this same orphanage! Kevin feels that he and his wife have received and learned much more from the orphans than they’ve given and taught them. With that being said, if you would like to help change the lives of orphans in Kenya, you can!

There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance to succeed. Upon sponsoring a child, you will receive a photo and bio of them, and you can write letters/send e-mails directly to the child to provide them with hopeful messages to brighten their days. Kevin and his wife often travel to Meru to visit the orphanage and welcome sponsors to travel along to meet firsthand the child they sponsor. Another way you can become involved is by hosting a craft fair to sell Kenyan crafts made by the Meru Women’s Collective. You will be provided with the goods, and all the profits generated will go back to the children at the orphanage. Contact Kevin Mann for more information. puppet performances and from film shorts to colorful board games. Town of Babylon Councilman Terry McSweeney joined Rebecca Sanin, President/CEO of the Health and Welfare Council of Long Island (HWCLI), to announce a new tax preparation program to provide for individuals that make less than $54,000 a year. The announcement was made at the Town of Babylon’s North Amityville Senior Center. Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory, Town of Babylon Department of Human Services Commissioner Madeline Quintyne-McConney and Vice President of Citi Community Development Pat Edwards were also in attendance. Representatives from New York State Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre’s office, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey and the Internal Revenue

Service (IRS) joined them. The Virtual Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program gives individuals who meet the income requirements the opportunity for free tax assistance, rather than seeking help from companies who regularly charge high rates for the same service with minimal returns. Evaluations are prepared off-site and returned to participants within a matter of days. According to Sanin, many individuals who qualify for VITA are also eligible to receive the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which paid out tens of billions of dollars across the country last year. “We hope as many people as possible take advantage of this free program, and by doing so, save money up front on tax preparation services and check their eligibility for the EITC.” Sanin said to a group of seniors who gathered at

the center to learn more about the program. At the conclusion of the event, Sanin and TommiGrace Melito, the director of VITA, answered the seniors’ questions and handed out information about the program. Young Scientists As part of an in-depth Teacher’s College science unit, students in Laura Oddo and Vanessa Pizzo’s co-teaching class at Deer Park’s John Quincy Adams Primary School worked as active scientists, looking closely at items from nature such as shells, rocks, fossils

and plants. The students observed, labeled and listed the objects, just as a real scientist would. “I loved this unit because it incorporated science, reading and writing,” said Oddo. “The kids were excited to use the magnifying glasses to look

closely and describe the features they see.” Said Pizzo, “I enjoyed watching the students use new vocabulary to share their excitement and findings as well as helping one another and comparing their discoveries.”

Compassion with Cookies Seventh-graders in family and consumer science classes at Deer Park’s Robert Frost Middle School recently showed their compassion by making 25 dozen cookies for The Mercy

empathetic to others to have a positive impact on their community,” said Cindy Adriaenssens, who guided the activity with fellow FACS teacher Paula Behrens.

HELPING HOMELESS PETS - Recently girls in Troop 1163, from Deer Park, hosted a Pet Care Drive outside DP Shoprite to help with their Silver Award Project. Items collected were brought to local shelters to support their efforts at helping homeless pets find their forever homes. The girls also created a you tube video depicting the steps they took to earn their Silver Awards to show others how to conduct a similar project. Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Night of Culture On the annual ENL Culture Night, English as a new language students at Deer Park’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School came to the school with their families on the evening of January 18th to celebrate holidays and cultures from around the world. Math-a-thon a Success Kicking off the school’s seventh consecutive Math-A-Thon fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, mathminded students at Deer Park’s John Quincy Adams Primary School attended a presentation by math lab specialist and Math-A-Thon organizer Marianna Grieco in the school cafeteria on January 9th.

The students will work to complete Math-A-Thon Funbooks by solving math problems, and sponsors can either make donations based on how many problems and pages the students complete, or of any amount they choose. During the past six years, Grieco’s students have improved their math skills while raising more than

$41,320 for St. Jude’s work to eradicate childhood cancer, including close to $9,000 last year alone. “The Math-A-Thon problems help the students become better at math while raising donations to benefit St. Jude Children’s Hospital,” said Grieco. “We are proud and happy to help children and their families at St. Jude.”
