Each year, American football’s championship game is one of the most-watched television broadcasts across the globe. The Super Bowl might not kick off until early evening in the eastern United States, but the day’s festivities typically begin much earlier than that. Super Bowl parties typically bring people from all walks of life together. Football fans mingle with non-fans who are more anxious to see the famed Super Bowl advertisements than they are the big game, but one thing all Super Bowl viewers can enjoy together is the food. Food is as much a part of Super Bowl Sunday as the game itself. That should be comforting in a year when Super Bowl parties figure to be atypical as the world continues to confront the COVID-19 pandemic. Large gatherings likely aren’t on the docket for Super Bowl LV, and the game itself may be played in a largely empty stadium, but fans at home can still cook up traditional Super Bowl

The Sons and Daughters of Italy in America, Constantino Brumidi Lodge N0. 2211 in Deer Park, recently honored Past Grand Knight, Daniel P. Calise of Our Lady of the Rosary Council in Deer Park. The original intention was to honor Daniel with a Testimonial Brunch in April 2020. However, due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, the event was postponed many times and now at the request of the honoree, it has been canceled. Therefore, the lodge decided to briefly honor him at their General Membership meeting on Tuesday, January 19th, 2021. The lodge thanked him for

his community service as Grand Knight of Our Lady of the Rosary Council in Deer Park from 2017 to 2019. His endless hours of work, commitment and dedication have been very much appreciated by the Constantino Brumidi Lodge, the Deer Park Lions Club, the Deer Park Community Association, Knights of Columbus, Columbiettes, and many other organizations in our neighboring communities. Mr. Calise was presented with several gifts and certificates for his outstanding two (2) year service as Grand Knight of OLOR in Deer Park from 2017 to 2019. Current Grand Knight, Joseph

Verdicchio presented him with a PGK Ring from the council. The Brumidi Lodge as well as the Suffolk County Conference K of C each presented him with a certificate of appreciation. Carmine & Susan Soldano presented him with a PGK Certificate from the Supreme Council, a PGK Wallet ID Card, Baseball Cap, tie-clip, Pin, Mini Jewel and commemorative Gavel Plaque with his years of service. Light refreshments were held after the presentations. Social distancing and masks were enforced except for a brief moment for the photograph.

Letters From Foster “Grandma” Bring Joy Despite the need for social distancing, Deer Park’s John Quincy Adams Primary School has creatively found a new way to safely engage its students with the school’s “grandparents” as part of the foster grandparent pen pal program. Foster grandma “Miss Florence” connected with second graders in Jackie Stein and Ashley Varney’s classroom by sending individual hand-written notes. “It is bringing our class such joy to be able to connect with Miss Florence,” Stein said. “We were connected with her this year, and she has

already sent us many emails about herself. When we had virtual instruction the few days before Christmas, my students typed questions and information about themselves in our chat box and Mrs. Varney sent it over to Florence, who used to work as a systems analyst and is very savvy on computers. She has told us that this is bringing such light to her life and she truly enjoys hearing about what we are doing. We are going to continue writing to her, but we may go the email route since it took her a very long time to pen all of the individual letters to our students.”

“We have been continually impressed and surprised by how much happiness corresponding with Miss Florence has brought us all,” Varney said. “When we received our first real letters, they arrived in individual envelopes on beautiful gold sparkly stationary. Each child’s letter was addressed with either Master for the boys or Miss for the girls. Miss Florence is an exceptional woman, and she sparked discussions and taught the children to find out more about new things. We are looking forward to planning a time to meet over Zoom.”

Chinese New Year is often referred to a the Lunar New Year because the holiday is not only observed by “Chinese” cultures, and because the Chinese calendar is lunisolar. In Chinese culture, oxen are known for diligence, dependability, strength and determination. The Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst officially launched it’s 2021 Hometown Heroes Banner Program in partnership with the Town of Babylon offering residents the opportunity to honor service men and women with a commemorative banner to be displayed in the hamlets of North Babylon, West Babylon, Deer Park, Wheatley Heights, North Amityville, Wyandanch and Copiague. First introduced in the Village of Lindenhurst, the program has now expanded throughout Babylon where banners will be displayed on decorative lamp posts from Memorial Day to Veterans Day. “We are extremely grateful to Babylon Supervisor Rich Shaffer and Beautification Director Viscel Moore for working with us to bring the Hometown Heroes Banner Program to all residents of the Town of Babylon”, said Kiwanis Committee Chair Ralph Somma. “Special thanks to “Navy Moms” Carolyn Mormino and Jeanine Walther for their perseverance in getting the Hometown Heroes program to the Town,” he added. Banners cost $200 and display a picture of the service member along with his or her name, branch and years of service. Participants can choose among one of three veterans’ organizations where a portion of the proceeds will be donated. In addition to the banner, participants will receive a 4x6 print suitable for framing, a digital version for sharing on social media and the opportunity to share their Hometown Heroes’ story to the Lindenhurst Kiwanis website. The NY State government has put detailed guidelines in place for all businesses, not just veterinarians. For example, medical facilities are required to screen patients before admitting them into the facility.

The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) was founded in 1993 by three friends who lived in Babylon. Determined to fight against breast cancer by raising awareness and educating women, the BBCC with their dedicated volunteers undertook the task of completing a demographic survey to ascertain the incidence of breast cancer in Babylon. From this, a volunteer driven grass-roots organization grew, which serves the entire Township of Babylon, including those with all gynecological cancers in addition to those with breast cancer. Today they provide direct patient services and support to help ease the burdens that breast and all gynecological cancers put on patients and their families/caregivers. In addition to assisting in the basic needs of those battling cancer, they also reach out to the community at large, providing educational programs to encourage healthier lifestyles, which would decrease the still very high instance of these cancers in our community. Please note, if you do not live in this township, you can still reach out to the BBCC to find out who in your area can be of help to you. The BBCC’s premier program is titled Lend a Helping Hand (LAHH). Since its inception in 1996, this unique patient service program provides much needed stress relief for breast cancer patients currently in treatment, as well as their families confronting diagnosis and ensuing treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation. Later on, the BBCC expanded the LAHH program to include Babylon Township women undergoing treatment for all types of gynecological cancers. Some of the services this program offers include house cleaning, transportation to/from medical appointments, financial

While scoring a ticket to the hottest game in town is often an expensive endeavor, with capacity restrictions for this year’s game it likely will be even more difficult for diehard fans to attend the game in person. Instead, individuals can view the game on CBS or stream it through CBS All Access. Here are some ways to safely celebrate while enjoying the game. • Go cashless. For those who will be at Raymond James Stadium for the big game, cash is not king. The NFL has partnered with Visa to employ cashless payment systems for everything at the venue. In addition, there will be reverse ATMs to turn cash into pre-paid cards to use for purchases. • Order in. The Super Bowl is one of the biggest nights for pizza sales and other takeout. Fans can make it even more so by ordering from their

favorite restaurants — many of which have been hit hard during the pandemic. • Keep gatherings small. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization and other public health advisory groups continue to maintain that social distancing is the best way to help curb the spread of COVID-19. That means keeping crowds small and separate. If possible, host the party outside, as the virus does not spread as easily outdoors as it does indoors. Encourage guests to dress warmly and provide heat sources, like fire pits or propane heaters. • Host a digital watch party. Video conferencing apps have been used for everything from work to school. Fans can gather online and watch the game simultaneously, but in their own homes. Share the cheers, jeers and some beers over an internet connection. The Super Bowl may be a bit different this year, but fans can still root for their favorite teams and enjoy this often thrilling game.

The Super Bowl is the culmination of the National Football League season, which traditionally begins in early September and ends in late December or early January. The Super Bowl is one of the most anticipated professional sporting events each year. In most years, around 75,000 fans pack the stadium hosting the game to watch the Super Bowl in person, and millions of people around the globe tune in to view the live simulcast, typically at private parties with friends or alongside fellow fans in sports bars. However, this year Super Bowl watch parties are expected to look quite a bit different. The 2021 Super Bowl may set the record for the smallest crowd in attendance due to the COVID-19 virus. The game is slated to be played at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla., and ESPN reports that the NFL is planning for 20 percent seating capacity at the game.
