Tom Donnelly Appointed As A Suffolk County FRES Deputy Fire Coordinator Acting Commissioner Patrick Beckley of the Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services (FRES) has appointed Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) as Deputy Fire Coordinator (DFC) – All Hazards. “Suffolk County FRES’ Deputy Fire Coordinator Program is vital to ensuring the continuity of emergency operations during a multiagency response and is important in terms of communication among first responder agencies in Suffolk County,” said Acting Commissioner Beckley. “On behalf of FRES, we thank Legislator Donnelly for his advocacy and commitment to the local fire and EMS service. We look forward to having him further serve the County as a Deputy Fire Coordinator.” Legislator Donnelly, an almost-four-decade Deer Park Fire Department volunteer, retired as a 27-year member of the Fire Department of New York City (FDNY) immediately after election to his first term in the Legislature in 2017. He is the appointed Legislative representative on the Suffolk Regional EMS Council (REMSCO) and serves on the Legislature’s Public Safety; Fire, Rescue and Emergency Medical Services & Preparedness; Health and Ways & Means committees. He volunteered with the Office of Emergency Management

(OEM) from the beginning and throughout the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, coordinating and implementing plans for local communities and ensuring that PPE and other materials were distributed to Suffolk County residents. “Throughout my career in public service, public safety has been and always will be my top priority,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I thank Acting Commissioner Beckley for appointing me to this position, and I look forward to serving all of the residents of Suffolk County in this role as I continue serving my neighbors in the 17th Legislative District as their legislator.” Legislator Donnelly’s appointment to the volunteer DFC position runs through December 31, 2023. ###

were eager to organize a service project that would impact their Deer Park High School community. The display case includes a collaborative mural and selected quotes from Dr. King, including “Darkness cannot drive out darkness:

Only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: Only love can do that.” “Our students are hopeful that with small acts such as this, they can make the world a better place,” teacher Aleisha Forbes said.

Prevention & Family Support FCA’s prevention team provides critical services to at-risk children and families including a nursery co-op program,

alcohol and substance abuse and gun violence r e d u c t i o n program, and more, through collaboration, education, and advocacy. Residential Care FCA operates four residences that focus on quality care, seamless transitions and well-managed aftercare services for youth. Nassau Haven and Walkabout provide emergency shelter and longer term transitional housing for homeless, runaway and trafﬁcked youth. Two other residences support children and young adults with serious emotional disturbances or mental health issues. Senior & Adult Services FCA believes that every senior deserves to live with dignity, safety and independence. FCA helps more than 10,000 seniors a year with meal deliveries, caregiver support, home visits for companionship, elder abuse prevention and advocacy. The number of people who turn to FCA for help is growing and with it, the need for donations to close gaps in government funding. FCA’s programs and services are greatly enhanced by the involvement of others, whether through donations of time or money, and welcome the help of all Long Islanders to further its mission. Money And Energy Saving Tips For The New Year

PSEG Long Island is sharing tips for customers to save money and reduce their energy consumption every day of the year. National Cut Your Energy Costs Day was launched to encourage consumers to explore energy- saving opportunities. In the past eight years, since PSEG Long Island was established, business and residential customers throughout Long Island and the Rockaways have done just that. More than $380 million in rebates have been distributed to customers through PSEG Long Island’s energy efficiency programs. That’s a savings of more than 2.1 billion kilowatts of energy since 2014 – and enough electricity to power more than 270,000 homes for an entire year. These tips can help customers save money and energy any time of year: · Replace inefficient incandescent light bulbs with LED bulbs since, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, lighting accounts for about 15% of the electricity used in the home, and LEDs use approximately 75% less energy and last up to 25 times longer. · Reduce “phantom power” by using energy efficient power strips or unplugging

electronic devices when they’re not in use. Items plugged into outlets use electricity even when they’re turned off. · Use a programmable thermostat to automatically manage your home’s heating and cooling needs. ENERGY STAR estimates that properly used programmable thermostats can save about $180 a year. In addition, PSEG Long Island offers rebates on smart thermostats. · Lower your thermostat by just one degree to potentially reduce your heating bill up to 3%. Lowering it two degrees during the day and five to 10 degrees at night will save even more. · Install timers and motion detectors to automatically manage indoor and outdoor lighting and help ensure lights are not on when they’re not needed. · Ceiling fans can be used to save energy in winter. Setting a fan to rotate clockwise on low pulls cool air toward the ceiling, pushing warm air down into a room. · Seal windows and doorframes with weather stripping or caulk, and remove or cover window air conditioners to help to prevent drafts that waste energy and money. · Install a high efficiency

air source heat pump (ASHP) to lower energy usage, save money and provide greater comfort in cold and hot months. Robust rebates are available from PSEG Long Island’s Home Comfort Program for ducted ASHP units, ducted geothermal heat pumps and ductless mini split systems. Additionally, PSEG Long Island’s Home Comfort PLUS program offers enhanced rebates for customers who meet certain income qualifications. · More money-saving ideas and rebate information are available at https:// w w w. p s e g l i n y. c o m / saveenergyandmoney/ energystarrebates. Independent annual evaluations by Demand Side Analytics (DSA) have found PSEG Long Island’s energy efficiency and renewable energy programs to be costeffective and energy-saving. Robert Frost Library Expands Learning With Four Grants

Anne Lotito-Schuh, the new librarian at Deer Park’s Robert Frost Middle School, has been busy winning several grants to upgrade the library. She was awarded a Jovia Bank grant for flexible-reading

seating, a Long Island Language Arts Council grant for graphic novels and manga collections, a New York State Educational M e d i a / Te c h n o l o g y Association grant to help create digital content and

an Eduporium grant to support makerspace coding projects. These grants will be used to expand the ways in which the Frost library can enrich student learning.
