EastLine Theatre in association with the Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts will present Intimate Apparel by Pulitzer Prize-winner Lynn Nottage this February at the BACCA Center in Lindenhurst’s downtown. This tender period romance will begin performances just before Valentine’s Day. After recent engagements in Babylon village, EastLine Theatre will return to the town of Babylon with Intimate Apparel. Based on the real life of her greatgrandmother, Lynn Nottage’s play follows talented seamstress Esther and her dream for a better life in 1905 New York City. Although she sews intricate ladies’ undergarments for the affluent, she dreams of sewing her own wedding trousseau. Through her work she forms a delicate, if forbidden relationship with the Orthodox Jewish man who sells her fabric. Nottage felt compelled to tell the story because “I am interested in people living in the margins of society and I do have a mission to tell the stories of women of color, in particular. I feel we’ve been present throughout history, but our voices have been neglected.” In writing the play, Nottage set out to write something “something simple and gentle”. Performances will take place at the BACCA Center in Lindenhurst starting on February 12th and running through the 27th. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors and students. Before the holiday break, Christy Freire’s English as a New Language students at Deer Park’s Robert Frost Middle School recently visited John Quincy Adams Primary School to read to Tara Gallagher’s secondgrade ENL class. The high schoolers – who belong to Frost’s Newcomer’s Club – and second graders

then worked together on an activity, creating “Gingerbread Friends” out of construction papers and stickers, before finishing their time together with a game of holiday bingo. “It was a great experience for all the students,” Freire said. “Both the second graders and the middle schoolers asked when we

can do something like that again before we even left. It was nice to see so many smiling faces, especially when one of the siblings was completely surprised because he didn´t know his brother was coming to read a book. I cannot wait to organize another event like this.”

Four New Deer Park Eagle Scouts Honored

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) honored four new Eagle Scouts from Deer Park Boy Scout Troop 86 at their Court of Honor, held January 8 at the Constantino Brumidi Lodge in Deer Park. To achieve the rank of Eagle Scout, Nicholas Chiatto, Stephen Mendell, Brett Patrick and Robert Punger each had to complete a special project. Mr. Chiatto designed and built a shelf for his Wilson Tech class storage pod with the purpose of improving organization, Mr. Mendell

organized a food drive for veterans on behalf of the organization Cooking for Long Island Veterans, Mr. Patrick assembled Easter baskets for families in need at Saint Anne’s Roman Catholic Church and Mr. Punger designed and constructed a “Sensory Box” for special needs students at John F. Kennedy Intermediate School. Troop 86, currently under the direction of Scoutmaster Robert Kerr, Assistant Scoutmaster Brian Kemp and Charter Representative Phil

Maniaci, is celebrating its 50th year. “I salute Mr. Chiatto, Mr. Mendell, Mr. Patrick and Mr. Punger for their hard work and dedication in becoming Eagle Scouts. As evidenced by their unique and impressive projects, I have no doubt these young men will have much success in their future endeavors,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I would also like to praise and thank all of past and present leaders and scouts in Troop 86 for all that they have done and continue to do for the community.”

Clothing Donations Needed For Long Island Children

Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10. Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach

program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985. “We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington. The “store” – staffed entirely by

New York Farm Bureau Seeking 2022 Scholarship Applicants

New York high school seniors who are graduating and interested in pursuing a career in agriculture can apply for New York Farm Bureau’s Agricultural Youth Scholarship. Eligible students can use the financial award for college or advanced training in the skilled trades. Statewide winners can earn up to $3,000 towards their future education. The applicant or their family must be a New York Farm Bureau member, and the student must live and/or work a farm or be involved with agriculture

in the state. The student must also complete the application which includes writing an essay addressing what they value and stand for in agriculture and life and how these values have impacted their decision to pursue an agricultural career. Scoring will determine both county and district winners and may include a personal interview. Each district winner will receive $250 and then compete for one of two state scholarships worth $3,000 and $2,000, based on their submitted applications.

Applications must be submitted by March 1, 2022, and the judging will take place prior to April 20, 2022. Alzheimer’s Foundation Of America Begins 20th Anniversary Year By Awarding Nearly $1 Million Research Grant To Feinstein Institutes For Medical Research The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) began its 20th anniversary year by announcing a $998,156 grant to the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research to expand research into developing new treatments aimed at addressing some of the most problematic behaviors of dementia—hallucinations, delusions, and aggression. The new five-year study builds on research previously conducted with a $500,000 grant AFA awarded to the Feinstein Institutes in 2016. Psychotic symptoms and aggression are among the most troubling manifestations of dementiarelated illnesses. Violent behavior directed towards caregivers is emotionally devastating and can be dangerous for those charged with providing a safe environment. Tragically, these behaviors are difficult to treat; and persistence of these symptoms are often the indication for placement outside of the home in a residential healthcare setting. “There’s no better way to begin AFA’s 20th anniversary year than by making this investment in hope,” said AFA Founder and Board Chairman Bert E. Brodsky.

“Finding new ways to treat these symptoms would have an enormous impact on safety and quality of life—both for people living with dementia and their caregivers. Researchers at the Feinstein Institutes are making exciting progress, and this new funding will enable them to continue building on it.” “A new year brings new beginnings, and we hope that this research will be a new chapter in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease,” said AFA President & CEO Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. “Just as AFA builds on the progress of its past twenty years, this new funding will help the Feinstein Institutes start the next phase of its research toward new treatments.” A team of scientists led by Jeremy Koppel, M.D., Co-director of the LitwinZucker Research Center at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, have recently found an association between the distribution of abnormal tau proteins in the brains of Alzheimer’s disease patients as visualized with advanced PET neuroimaging and psychotic symptoms. A previous discovery made by the team linked impairments in the processing of facial emotion with the onset of

psychosis in Alzheimer’s. This, together with new PET scan evidence of abnormal tau in brain regions believed to be critical for this faculty led investigators to the hypothesis that tau disrupts networks in regions of the brain necessary for reality testing. Investigators believe that this may result in psychosis and aggression. “The funding provided by AFA made our work possible; and the ongoing support is critical, allowing us to do the necessary research to translate these discoveries into safe and effective treatments for patients and caregivers,” says Dr. Koppel. The next five-year phase funded by the new AFA grant aims to target these symptoms through the development of immune therapies in the form of antibodies that bind to pathogenic tau. Researchers will conduct a study comprised of three types of participants—those with both Alzheimer’s and psychosis, those with Alzheimer’s but without psychosis, and healthy controls between the ages of 65 and 85. Participants will undergo a battery of cognitive and electrophysiologic testing, with levels and location of

tau quantified in each group with new tau PET imaging technology. The goal is to identify which areas of the brain correspond to specific symptoms, so that they can be targeted through antibody treatments. AFA is able to award research grants such as this through the generosity of individuals and organizations. closing of Willowbrook State School back in the early 1970s. As a young reporter, Geraldo Rivera exposed the deplorable conditions that existed within the then largest institution in the nation serving children with developmental disabilities. Rivera first learned about these conditions from Life’s WORC founder Victoria Schneps Yunis. Her daughter, Lara, diagnosed at an early age with severe brain damage, was a resident at Willowbrook. When cuts in state funding caused the institution to fall into extensive disrepair, Schneps, along with other

concerned individuals, picketed to fight for the rights of Willowbrook’s more than 5,000 residents. Rivera’s report, which earned him a Peabody Award, ultimately forced the closing of Willowbrook. Schneps Yunis started Life’s WORC and opened its first home in Little Neck, Queens. Its first residents were former Willowbrook residents. Today, Life’s WORC provides beautiful homes located across the region, from Nassau and Suffolk to Queens and Manhattan, in addition to community services, financial and trust
