Though there may not be a cancer vaccine, that does not mean that vaccinations cannot play a role in cancer prevention. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some cancers, including cervical cancer and cancers of the vulva and oropharynx, are caused by the human papillomavirus, or HPV. The CDC notes that the HPV vaccine protects people against the types of HPV that most often cause cancers. Adults can discuss the benefits of HPV vaccinations with their physicians, as the CDC notes that adults between the ages of 27 and 45 may have already been exposed to HPV, meaning the HPV vaccination will provide less benefit. Parents should know that the CDC recommends the HPV vaccination for preteens aged 11 to 12 years.

Legislator Donnelly And County Office For The Aging Announce Babylon Winter Senior Advocate Schedule Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) is pleased to inform Babylon residents about the local Suffolk County Office for the Aging Winter 2024 Senior Advocate Schedule. Senior advocates are County representatives who come out into the community and assist seniors with information gathering, completion of eligibility or recertification applications and referrals to appropriate community agencies. “This is an excellent chance for senior citizens to get the assistance and information they need by connecting with the County’s senior advocates right in their own communities,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I hope all those interested in the services that the Suffolk County Office for the Aging provides will take advantage of this opportunity.” Senior Advocates will be visiting the following locations in the Town of Babylon: • Deer Park Library, 44 Lake Avenue, Deer Park: Friday March 15, 9 – 11 am • North Amityville Nutrition Center, 48-C Cedar Road, Amityville: Wednesdays, February 21 & March 20, 10 am – 1 pm • Rainbow Center, 293 Buffalo Avenue, L i n d e n h u r s t : Wednesdays, February 7 & March 6, 8:30 – 11:00 am

BACCA Celebrates 50 Years The Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts (BACCA) will reach a very significant milestone in 2024 as it celebrates 50 years of supporting the arts in the Town of Babylon and beyond. BACCA serves as a platform and resource center for artists and community members by offering unique arts and cultural programming, instruction, development, and experiences. “I am excited to announce the beginning of a year-long celebration of BACCA’s 50 years of service to Babylon Township, its hamlets, villages and residents,” stated BACCA Board of Directors President Shawn Cullinane. “We look forward to hosting unique celebration events throughout 2024, and invite the community to join BACCA in commemorating this golden milestone.” Incorporated in 1974 by an enthusiastic group of volunteers with a vision, BACCA has grown to become a year-round sponsor of many activities including art classes and workshops, art exhibitions, live theatre productions, concerts, public arts projects, cultural presentations, children’s recitals, and varied opportunities for artists. Major recurring annual events include the Paumanauke Pow-Wow, the Long Island Bluegrass and Roots Music Festival,
the Annual Judged Art Show, and the SCALA/ BACCA Annual Student Art Show. “We are fortunate to have developed many new relationships with organizations and community groups, artists, municipalities, and small businesses. That, along with our members, is what makes what we do possible,” said BACCA Executive Director Liz Mirarchi. “It has been a joy and an honor to work with our partners on new programs, public arts projects, and the many ways we plan to continue to advocate for the arts and artists in our communities well beyond our 50th year.” Public Arts projects recently completed include a Community Arts Installation at 11 Park Drive in Wyandanch with the Albanese Development Corporation, fabricated by Spirit Ironworks, and designed by local artist Salinda Santiago. Sponsored by the Town of Babylon Local Development Corporation through the “Babylon Together Project,” a series of murals along the Cedar Beach underpass were completed by high school students from across the Town of Babylon, with their art teachers and artist Ron Becker, and supported by the Babylon Parks Department, and
the Flower of Honor Project on Straight Path in Wyandanch was unveiled, created by Fine Arts Photographer Harper Bella, highlighting Wyandanch Community Members. Through a grant from Creatives Rebuild New York Artist Employment Program (Tides Foundation), BACCA has completed various programs with artist administrators Harper Bella and Jose Tutiven. BACCA activities are held at Old Town Hall in Babylon Village, the Town Hall Annex in North Babylon, Wyandanch Plaza, and the BACCA Arts Center in Lindenhurst Village, as well as other locations throughout the Town of Babylon. Plans are currently being discussed for additional arts and cultural activities in an historic home in Amityville Village. To begin 2024, BACCA is announcing a Call to Artists to create a 50th Anniversary commemorative design, inviting the community to celebrate the occasion. Mercy Soup Kitchen Seeking Volunteers “For I Was Hungry And You Gave Me Food…” Matthew 25:35 It is an exciting time at the Mercy Soup Kitchen of Wyandanch as it is preparing to launch its new and expanded post Covid operation. Located in the basement of Trinity Lutheran Church at 17 South 20th Street, the Kitchen served its first meal to hungry people in 1980 and currently serves an average of 108 people per day. During the pandemic, however, Kitchen procedures had to be modified in order to provide hot, nourishing meals safely and continuously to those in need. Indoor sit-down dining was discontinued and only take-out dining

But today the Kitchen is posing for a postCovid reopening – a reorganizational rebirth of sorts – where Kitchen procedures can finally return to again offering guests dignified, indoor sit-down dining. The Kitchen relies heavily on its generous volunteer support and, as such, numerous on-site and off-site volunteer opportunities are now available. While there are openings for on-site positions, such as helping to prepare and serve meals and to perform various maintenance functions, there are also openings for diverse
off-site positions in areas such as finance, grant development and preparation, legal compliance assurance, marketing duties, social media facilitation and fund raising/donation coordination. Only with the efforts of its volunteers can the Kitchen succeed in its mission to provide food security to those in need.
