On January 20th, 2017, Donald J. Trump will be sworn in as the 45th President of the United States of America. The Transition of Power from one President to the next President is a tradition that has always ensured a peaceful and seamless changeover to the incoming new administration. Throughout this particular election cycle, beginning with the primaries and going through Election Day - and still continuing to this day - our country has been very divided. It is now time for everyone to accept the results of the choice of the American people and stand together behind this new administration. There have been many times in history that the Transition of Power has been tested. Some examples of these times were the transitions between President Kennedy to President Lyndon B. Johnson after Kennedy was assassinated;
President Nixon to President Gerald Ford after Nixon had to resign; and President Clinton to President George W. Bush after the 2000 election recounts. In all cases, the American people ultimately accepted the outcomes and showed respect to the Office of the Presidency of the United States of America. They did the right thing and worked together for the good of our country. We are now at the same point, and we all need to support our new incoming President. The disrespect and negativity that so many are displaying is a complete disgrace and an embarrassment to all of us and to our country worldwide. President Elect Trump’s priorities of jobs, better trade deals, strengthening our military, a new, improved and more affordable healthcare system, schools controlled at the state level, childcare assistance, tax
adjustments, cutting unnecessary government spending, reducing the national debt, securing our borders to keep America safe from terrorists, drugs and criminals, and always keeping America and Americans first will all begin January 20th, 2017. We have already seen some of President Elect Trump’s positive accomplishments, even before he has taken office. He has succeeded at keeping several large companies’ plants open and operating here in the USA, such as Carrier and Ford. This has saved many jobs and already helped many Americans. We should all be looking forward to many more positive actions and results from this new administration. We are one country, and we should all have and work toward common goals. January 20th, 2017 is our opportunity. God Bless the United States of America!

So… how is everyone’s year coming along so far? Are we still avidly pursuing our New Year’s resolutions, or have we moved on to other, more realistic, goals? Sure, we’re only slightly more than two weeks underway into 2017, but even the most promising “fresh starts” have been known to bite the dust not even a few days in to a new year. Personally, I don’t see the point. Chances are, the second something negative happens, your entire motivation will be thrown off anyway; so, rather than give yourself unnecessary reason for disappointment, keep your goals open and flexible – much like life. The best-laid plans more often than not do not go according to any pre-conceived notion of how things are “supposed” to transpire. The sooner we
either A) should not be on the road at all, in any season; or B) had best make like the groundhog and hibernate for the duration of the winter. Crawling, speeding, braking unnecessarily, swerving all over the road… such are just a few examples of the skills witnessed daily on my fairly brief commute to and from work. Throw in a flurry or two, and forget about it. Such is the state of life in January. And if not now, there are similar factors to face each and every subsequent month of the year. So take your resolutions – or whatever form of self-improvement you have documented for yourself in 2017 – keep them in your back pocket as a reminder, and move onward and upward. There will be a rainbow over the horizon soon enough. Just don’t drive off the road admiring it.

To be continued… until spring, most likely. And then there are the roads. Traveling on Long Island is a skill to be mastered under the best of circumstances. Throw in some inclement weather and it’s a regular three ring circus, complete with a collection of characters who

Deer Park High School freshman Alyssa Robb and sophomore Maya Kovic were among only 14 students selected as candidates for the first-ever Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Student of the Year program on Long Island. Both Kovic and Robb are dedicated, diligent students and currently enrolled in numerous Advanced Placement courses. Hailing from both public and private schools across Long Island, the candidates were chosen by the LLS Leadership Committee for their support of the Society’s mission to raise funds for blood cancer research and cures through leadership, passion and involvement in the community. The candidate who raises the most money at the end of the six weeks will be named Student of the Year and receive a $2,500 scholarship. In addition, three students will be
selected to receive a Citizenship Scholarship Award of $500 each based on their commitment to community, leadership and the LLS mission. The campaign will kick off on February 9th and will culminate with a March 23rd awards ceremony at the Fox Hollow in Woodbury, when the winners will be announced. “It is absolutely wonderful to see two young ladies that are so motivated and driven to volunteer their time to this great cause,” said school counselor Margaret C. Pereira. “They are truly an inspiration.” “These students embody the idea that anyone can make a difference with hard work and dedication,” said Sara Lipsky, the executive director of the LLS’s Long Island Chapter. “They are helping to make an impact on the lives of cancer patients, not someday, but today.”

Make the Most of Game Day Entertaining
Few things are more exciting and festive for sports fans than gathering with close friends to cheer on a favorite team. Party-Perfect Pizza
4 slices Black Kassel Speck, cut in half lengthwise
Pizza Dough: 1¾ to 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 cup cake and pastry flour 2¼ teaspoons instant or bread-machine dry yeast (or 1 envelope) 1 teaspoon salt 1¼ cup very warm water Directions: To make pizza dough, stir together allpurpose flour, cake flour, yeast and salt in a mixer fitted with a dough hook; make a well in the center. Add water. Mix on medium speed until all flour is incorporated into dough; add remaining flour as needed to have soft, slightly sticky dough. Alternatively, you can mix by hand. Turn out on a wellfloured surface. Let rest covered for 10 minutes. Divide into thirds. Place a pizza stone or upside-down baking sheet in the oven and preheat to 450º F. Gently flatten dough into a circle or rectangle
on a lightly floured surface, creating a rim. Transfer to a cornmeal-dusted pizza peel or another upside-down baking sheet; slide dough onto the hot pizza stone or baking sheet. Bake for 8 minutes. Meanwhile, combine 2 tablespoons olive oil in a bowl with garlic, rosemary and salt and pepper to taste. Remove pizza from oven. Brush with olive oil mixture and top with ricotta and mozzarella. Return pizza to oven, baking until cheese is golden and bubbly, about 6 more minutes. Toss arugula and shallot slices in a large bowl with lemon juice, olive oil and salt and pepper to taste. Top the pizza with arugula salad, speck and shaved Parmesan cheese. Cut into wedges or squares with scissors; serve immediately. Tip: As an alternative to speck, you can try Black Kassel Old Forest, Picante or Mustard Seed salami. You can also buy store-made pizza dough and simply layer on the toppings.
