Over 367,000 people attended the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach the last time the squadron headlined in 2018. The U.S. Navy Blue Angels were also scheduled to perform again in 2020 when the show was cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Instead, the team participated in the first Bethpage Virtual Air Show in 2020 by recording special video messages for fans and providing exclusive video footage. Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) recently joined with the Deer Park Drug Prevention Coalition for its 3rd Annual Holiday Toy Drive to provide holiday cheer to children of parents in drug treatment programs. Scores of presents were collected, wrapped and delivered to children throughout Suffolk County, marking a very successful drive and

ensuring parents could continue to focus on their treatment. Legislator Donnelly’s district office in Huntington Station served as a drop-off location for four weeks ending December 16. “I would like to thank the Deer Park Drug Prevention Coalition and volunteer President Valerie St. Bernard for again holding such a wonderful

toy drive,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I was happy to help support this great cause and appreciative of all of our neighbors who dropped off donations. By generously working together, we can lift the spirits and help make it a great holiday for all children and parents, regardless of current situation.”

According to the American Cancer Society, cancer patients receiving chemotherapy or radiation treatment are generally urged to avoid vaccinations other than the ﬂu shot, though that conventional wisdom may not be applicable in relation to the COVID-19 virus. The ACS notes that vaccines require an immune system response to work effectively, and cancer patients’ immune systems may not be able to produce an adequate response to vaccines during treatment. That can make vaccines, including those for COVID-19, less effective. However, while traditionally cancer patients have been urged to avoid vaccinations during treatment, the ACS notes that cancer patients, due to fragile immune systems resulting from both their disease and the treatments for it, are at risk for severe COVID-19 disease. As a result, doctors may still advise their patients to receive the COVID-19 vaccination even during treatment, as having some measure of protection against the virus may still be better than having none at all. Bank Of America Names New York Marine Rescue Center A 2021 Neighborhood Builder® To Support Ecological Conservation Efforts On Long Island

New York Marine Rescue Center (NYMRC) will be able to expand its marine conservation and educational programs through a multi-year grant from Bank of America, after being named as a 2021 Bank of America Neighborhood Builders® awardee for its impactful work on Long Island. This comes as the center prepares to treat sea turtles impacted by cold stunning a phenomenon similar to hypothermia, which occurs annually on Long Island in the fall and winter months when sea turtles are exposed to cold water for extended periods. As a Neighborhood Builder, NYMRC receives $200,000 in unrestricted funding over two years as well as leadership training on topics ranging from increasing financial sustainability, human capital management and strategic storytelling, joins a network

of peer organizations across the U.S. The program continues to be the nation’s largest investment into nonprofit leadership development. NYMRC has seen an increased need for marine rehabilitation services as changing ocean temperatures disrupt marine environments, while experiencing a decrease in volunteers due to coronavirus. Being one of the largest rehabilitation facilities in the region, during the 2020/2021 cold stun season, the NYMRC took in an additional 29 sea turtles from network partners due to limited space within the network. Additionally, the center is expanding its educational programs to reach schools not only on Long Island but in Florida and Puerto Rico, expanding knowledge of marine ecosystems and inspiring young people to

participate in conservation efforts. “The New York Marine Rescue Center is protecting Long Island’s marine life, while also educating and empowering children and adults to take steps to conserve our oceans,” said Marc Perez, President, Bank of America Long Island. “These efforts are crucial to Bank of America’s commitment to drive progress on important challenges facing society, including our work to address climate change and preserve Earth’s natural resources.” “The ﬂexible funding provided through the Neighborhood Builders program will allow us to expand our capacity to rehabilitate marine animals, build a more diverse staff and board, and assist with emergency situations that may arise, particularly as the cold stun season approaches
