With that, each holiday season is a sort of closing ceremony, if you will, a gathering together of family and friends to take stock of the year that was, with the hope that - whether good or bad - the next will be even better. This Thanksgiving, we have the opportunity to spend the day with family that we seldom see, and to make new memories along the way. Over the years, traditions have come and gone, along with many beloved relatives. This void can tend to leave behind traces of sadness, of course; but the chance to gather with those who remain is a priceless one we should always be grateful for. Among the festivities,
this November 28th commemorates the one-year “birthday” of my little baby betta, “Norton von Spudley.” Of course, one can never know the true date; but considering the tiny speck of a fish he was when I purchased him, I’d venture to guess one year is just about right. Last Thanksgiving was a bit of a rough one, coming just a few short days after the passing of my beloved Buddy the Betta - friend, fish and guest columnist extraordinaire. While no subsequent pet can ever truly replace him, my little Spud is certainly a welcome addition to the family. Speaking of new traditions, this year will mark the first in quite some time that I will not be rising at 5 a.m. to see the sunrise and head out

Not that I ever truly began my Christmas shopping at this point; rather, it was always more of a personal shopping spree, with a few gifts thrown in for good measure. I have always been more of the Christmas-in-December type of shopper; anything sooner, and the spirit hasn’t truly set in yet. And with that, I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving, no matter what form of celebration the day takes on. May you enjoy your traditions, or perhaps establish new ones, en route to lasting memories that will take you through Christmas and into 2018. Always appreciate what you have, while hoping for even better things around the corner.

30th annual Holiday Parade On Saturday, December 2nd, at 6 p.m. (rain date: December 3rd, same time), the Deer Park Fire Department will be celebrating its 30th annual Holiday Parade. The parade will start at the Deer Park High School and proceed down Deer Park Avenue south to the Deer park Firehouse on

Family Service League, a Long Island based nonprofit human service organization, is proud to announce that two additional Caregiver Supports Groups have been formed. These additional Northfork sites give Long Islanders eight convenient locations throughout Suffolk County, from as far west as Huntington, to and to both North an d South Forks. With generous support from the Suffolk County Office for the Aging, FSL has provided FREE Caregiver Support Services to individuals caring for a person with disabilities (over age 60) since 2005. These services include individual counseling, support groups and trainings. Timely topics such as estate planning, stress management and nutrition are discussed. On average, FSL has seen 85 clients each month in 1:1 counseling and support groups during calendar year 2017. These groups provide a safe space where caregivers can share their experiences, concerns and successes. It is also a great venue to learn more about community resources. According to a 2015 National Caregiving survey, more than 42 million family caregivers provide unpaid care for an aging parent, spouse or other loved one so that they may age in place. The value of the care is estimated at $450 billion dollars annually. Nearly two thirds (64%) of caregivers report feeling emotionally
stressed, but 94 % say that it is important for them to provide the care for their loved one so they can continue to live independently in their own home. “Families often find themselves thrust into caregiving situations based on a crisis situation. They can become quickly overwhelmed by the enormity of the caregiver role and their own limitations based on distance, job obligations, financial restrictions, and other family responsibilities,” said Karen Boorshtein, FSL President. “This is compounded by the lack of information about available services. FSL support groups provide the resources families need and there are no fees charged to those who attend.” Caregiver issues may include stresses related to the actual activities associated with caregiving, fear and worry about a loved one dying, concerns about the caregiver’s own health, and guilt associated with feelings of frustration and anger. This program continues to thrive and develop as a vital resource for caregivers. Maureen’s Haven is currently in need of various donations and volunteers. As far as donations, they need the following: latex gloves, cleaning supplies, garbage bags, toilet paper, paper towels, coffee/tea keurig pods, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and of course monetary donations.
They are also in need of people to volunteer their time in the following areas at their day center: assisting in organizing their donation room, building
shelves in the donation room, assisting with office work duties, and assisting with cleaning up the day center. They also need men to serve as overnight staff to watch over the homeless on Monday nights at Aquebogue’s Our Redeemer Church. After an exciting morning of picking pumpkins from the patch at Deer Park’s John Quincy Adams Elementary School, the fun continued for kindergartners in Laura Oddo and Vanessa Pizzo’s class as they moved to a series of different learning stations themed around pumpkins. Oddo, who teaches kindergarten, and Pizzo,
an ENL teacher, are teamed in a co-teaching classroom featuring math, science and art stations. “The students truly enjoy moving to different stations and working on different activities,” said Oddo. “They love the hands-on approach in each station, and the small groups create a great learning space,” said Pizzo.
In the science station, the students experimented with different fruits and vegetables and made predictions to whether they would sink or float. In the math station, students measured their pumpkins. In the art station, students created faces to make their pumpkins into jack-o’lanterns.
