North Babylon Marine And Firefighter Honored As Islanders’ Military Hero Of The Game
On Tuesday, December 2nd, North Babylon’s own Cpl. Brian Cullen was recognized as the Military Hero of the Game by the New York Islanders — an honor befitting a man whose life has been defined by courage, sacrifice, and service. Cullen served in the United States Marine Corps from 1994 to 1998, writing his “blank check” to the
nation before continuing his career in public service. After completing his military commitment, he joined the NYPD’s 75th Precinct and, in 2001, became a member of the FDNY. Beginning his firefighting service in Ladder 138, Cullen earned the Medal of Valor from thenMayor Michael Bloomberg for re-entering a burning apartment building to rescue
a trapped occupant — a moment that showcased the bravery he would continue to demonstrate throughout his career. He later advanced to the prestigious and elite Rescue Company 1, where he proudly serves today. Cullen attended the game with his wife and three children, who watched with pride as their father was honored in front of thousands of fans. We’ve always known he’s a hero, but it was amazing to see everyone else recognize it too.” The nomination for this honor came from longtime friend and Town of Babylon
Councilman Terence McSweeney, also a member of the FDNY, who has known Cullen for most of his life. “Brian has been part of my life for as long as I can remember and is one of the most selfless people I know. I’ve seen him step forward when others step back, serve his country with honor, and protect New Yorkers when it matters most. When the call comes, and lives are on the line, Brian is the person you want standing next to you. Men and women like Brian — our military members and first responders — are the reason this country remains safe and strong, and they deserve to be recognized far more often. There is no one more deserving of this honor,” McSweeney said.
