Lindenhurst Mayor Michael Lavorata and Trustee Douglas Madlon recently enjoyed a wonderful night of “dramedy” at the Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts (BACCA) Arts Center, located at 149 North Wellwood Avenue. The Debut Theater Company presented the original play, “Lucky Bird”, written by local playwright Anthony DiFranco. The show, directed by Martin Knapp, starred an ensemble cast, including Chrissy Cavagnet, Gerry Ferretti, James Rappa, Katie Schrader, Donn Weber, Kevin Vincent, and Missy Roche. Mayor Lavorata said, “I totally enjoyed this original production, and the opportunity to experience an evening of theater right here in the Village of Lindenhurst. • Do not eat too close

to bedtime. A recent study published in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics found that eating more of a day’s total energy intake in the evening is associated with a higher risk of being overweight or obese. The researchers behind the study concluded that eating more of the day’s energy intake at midday can lower the risk of being overweight or obese. Individuals are more likely to stay the course when they see positive results, so try to eat dinner several hours before bedtime and resist the urge to snack after dinnertime.

Cutting out indulgent foods may seem appropriate, but such an approach could make you miserable, and a diet that sparks feelings of misery will prove harder to commit to than one that allows for the occasional indulgence. Moderation is the name of the game, and that should be a rule of thumb for both healthy foods and indulgences. Don’t make indulgences part of your daily routine, even if you eat them in moderation. Rather, save treats for special occasions, and even then only eat them in moderation.

• Treat yourself, but only periodically. It’s unreasonable and potentially counterproductive to avoid foods seen as treats completely.

• Consider eating less, but more frequently. Data is conflicting regarding eating smaller but more frequent meals. A study published in

the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found that individuals with six or more eating occasions in 24 hours had a lower mean body mass index than those with four or fewer eating occasions in 24 hours. The researchers behind the study concluded that eating a larger number of small

meals throughout the day may be associated with improved diet quality and lower BMI. This approach is commonly referred to as “grazing,” and some research has indicated it has no metabolic advantage over other approaches to eating. So what to make of the mixed results? Dieters can

decide for themselves and eat more frequent but smaller, healthier meals to combat hunger pangs that can arise when switching to a new diet. If hunger no longer poses a threat that can derail your diet, then this approach might increase the chances you stay committed to eating right.

The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health. Study participants

who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.

Benefits Of Volunteering Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their

own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received

surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health. The study found that, when compared to those who did

not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings.

Town Of Babylon’s Toys For Tots Drive Most Successful In Years The Town of Babylon partnered with the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots program this holiday season in what became the most successful toy drive the Town has held in years. The initiative united residents, local organizations, and volunteers with a shared mission of bringing joy and hope to children throughout the community during the holiday season. Town officials expressed their appreciation to the many individuals, families, employees, and community groups whose generous donations made the effort possible. Special recognition was given to the Babylon Bocce Club, which organized and hosted a largescale toy drive last month, contributing significantly to the program’s overall success. “This is what community is all about,” said Councilman Terence McSweeney. “When residents, local organizations, and partners

DHL Celebrated 22 Years Of ‘Operation Holiday Cheer’, Delivering Hundreds Of Christmas Trees To U.S. Troops Overseas Christmas trees, complete with ornaments, lights, menorahs, and letters from schoolchildren to U.S. troops stationed in Bahrain, Djibouti, Iraq, Jordan, and Kuwait. This beloved annual initiative, known as Operation Holiday Cheer, is organized in partnership with Dees’ Nursery and various New York-area charities. “Being away from family and friends during the holidays is never easy, especially for service members abroad,” said DHL Express U.S. CEO Greg Hewitt. “Through Operation Holiday Cheer, we are bringing comfort, joy, and a touch of home to our troops. After a brief stop at DHL’s Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport hub, the shipment headed to the

DHL Bahrain hub before reaching U.S. military bases in the region. This year’s contributions included trees from Dees’ Nursery and items donated by local organizations, including Adopt-a-Soldier Platoon, the Lt. Dennis W. Zilinski Memorial Fund, and various VFW chapters throughout New York State. DHL’s Operation Holiday Cheer traces its origins to 2004, when the mother of a deployed U.S. soldier asked DHL to help her send her son a Christmas tree. Inspired by this request, Dees’ Nursery, along with local businessman Jim Adelis and DHL, arranged the delivery. Since then, DHL has transported more than 14,000 Christmas trees and other holiday items to troops overseas, providing a heartwarming reminder of home each holiday season.
