More than 400 attendees from the Long Island medical and corporate community came out to the American Museum of Armor in Bethpage on Friday, May 8th, to attend the American Heart Association’s 52nd Annual Long Island Heart Ball. The Long Island Heart Ball is an annual social event held to recognize outstanding accomplishments of

individuals and companies in the area of cardiovascular science and leadership. This year’s event was chaired by Allan H. Cohen, Esq., Managing Partner, Long Island, Nixon Peabody LLP. The 52nd Annual Heart Ball honored Scott L. Schubach, MD, FACC, Chairman, Department of Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgery, WinthropUniversity Hospital. Dr.

Schubach received the 2015 Cardiovascular Science Award. Joseph R. Ficalora, President & Chief Executive Officer, New York Community Bancorp, Inc. received the 2015 Corporate Leadership Award. Clay Darrohn, Chief Executive Officer, Fishbat received the #HeartBall #Honoree award. The event was emceed by News 12’s Elisa DiStefano and

chaired by Allan Cohen, Nixon Peabody. The evening was a spectacular success and included dinner, silent auction and dancing to the tunes of the Times Square Orchestra. Summer concert season is upon us! I have to admit, I went a little ticket crazy this time around. am of the philosophy that, if you want to do something badly enough, why should you wait for tickets to be sold out and appear on resale sites for triple the price? Spontaneity is key – just press that “purchase” button and worry about minor details like cost and finding a concert companion later! Of course, needless to say, after realizing that I had accumulated tickets to about seven or eight shows over these next several months, I began to panic. Slightly. Trying to remember who likes what types of music, the corresponding dates, times, locations, the cost factor … it’s a bit like being an event planner, desperately trying to fill each slot appropriately. The ultimate

goal, of course, is to not find myself solo the day of the show, contemplating a.) going by myself, b.) attempting to resell the tickets, or c.) worst of all, losing the money laid out and not going at all. A truly lose/lose situation. By the time you read this, I will have attended concert number one (guest confirmed, tickets paid in full), with numbers two and three to follow shortly in the coming week. A bit of overkill, I know. But that’s what summer is all about – enjoying the great outdoors with family and friends, taking in some music, film, culture … whatever the case may be. This is what we look forward to all year. Let’s not forget to savor it now that it’s arrived.

Star Island Yacht Club has announced that it will hold its 29th Annual Shark Tournament on June 18th-20th. This annual Father’s Day event has become a Montauk tradition and a major happening, with over 100 boats participating annually, drawing thousands of spectators. Cash prizes will be awarded for the heaviest shark in the tournament and the heaviest shark for each day. The top three prizes will also be awarded for the heaviest mako, heaviest blue shark and heaviest shark of another species. The World’s Fair provided the opportunity for students to present their countries to other social studies classes and provide an interactive experience. borscht, a juice derived from beets and Venezuelan tequenos, a fried dish of cheese and flour. Hoops For Heart were educated in their physical education classes on the dangers of heart disease and ways to keep their hearts healthy and strong. Coordinated by physical education teachers Dan Broadbent, Kristin Havdoglous and Stephen Rebholz, students kept their heart rates up as they hustled through a

basketball themed obstacle course. In addition, a portion of the gymnasium was designated for students to demonstrate their basketball shooting and dribbling skills. With the collaborative efforts of middle school students, the Hoops for Heart event raised more than $2,370.

Ten students in the Copiague School District were honored with the Suffolk Zone Physical Education Leadership Award for their outstanding leadership qualities in physical education by the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Two fifth-grade students from the district’s four elementary schools and two eighth-graders from the middle school were nominated by

their physical education teachers to receive this award. To be eligible for the Suffolk Zone Award, students must possess leadership attributes in their physical education class and be a positive role model for their classmates. The Copiague students were recognized during an awards ceremony at Longwood Middle School on May 6th. Congratulations are extended to the following students for receiving this recognition: Deauville

Gardens East Elementary fifth-graders Matthew Pyke and Devonie Rhoden; Deauville Gardens West Elementary fifth-graders Paris DeFreitas and Edwin Duran; Great Neck Road Elementary fifth-grade students Derrick Holman and Emma Nuzzi; Susan E. Wiley Elementary fifthgraders Kassandra O’Brien and Austin Hernandez; and Copiague Middle School eighth-grade students Paul Illicete and Tayanee Peay.

Sports Sensations In late May, the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Booster Club hosted its annual spring sports awards dinner to honor the athletic accomplishments and teamwork of studentathletes. During the May 26th event, the district recognized varsity team members from baseball, softball, and boys and girls lacrosse and track teams. During the ceremony, teams as well as individual students were awarded for their dedication throughout the season. Members of each team were presented with a varsity letter, certificate and pin. Individual recognitions were presented for most valued player, most improved player and the coaches’ award to deserving athletes.

Four special awards were presented to studentathletes for boys lacrosse and baseball. The Jared J. Pennington Memorial Lacrosse Award was given to Mordecai Burt, Joseph Cipriani was the recipient of the Sean Ryan Noonan Memorial Lacrosse Award, the Unsung Hero Award was presented to Jose Penalo-Rodriguez and Mark Gilroy received the Daniel O’Connell Memorial Baseball Award. The Section XI Gold Key Award, the highest Section XI honor that an athlete can receive for sport participation, and Golden Eagle awards were also presented at the ceremony. Golden Eagle awards were presented to one student-athlete from each team with the highest

cumulative grade point average. This season’s Golden Eagle award recipients were Thomas Clark (baseball), Johan Corona (boys lacrosse), Dawn Gioia (girls track), Jefferson Guevara (boys track), Nicolette Vasseur (girls lacrosse), and Sofie Wilson (softball). The Gold Key is awarded to student athletes who letter in eight junior varsity or varsity seasons in grades 10 through 12. This year’s recipients were Turner Kelly (football, winter track, spring track), Aaron McFadden (football, cross-country, winter track, spring track), Steven Mosher (cross-country, winter track, spring track), and Nicolette Vasseur (soccer, winter track, lacrosse).

FISHING TRIP - On May 16th, the Kiwanis Club of Amityville treated several students from the Amityville Memorial High School to a day of fishing and a Marine Biology lesson aboard the Yankee III out of Captree. Despite the morning rain everyone had a great time, caught fish and learned a great deal about our marine environment. A prize was awarded to Stephen who caught the largest fish! Flag Day is June 14th. A time to display and honor our Flag. With this in mind, I thought I would provide you with information about the use of the United States Flag during a funeral service. The following regulation is taken from the National Flag Foundation, the authoritative body for honoring, caring for and displaying the American Flag: “The ceremony of draping the casket with a United States Flag is used to honor veterans, “patriotic citizens”. Upon further investigation I have learned that this has come to mean every citizen of the United States has the right to have his or her casket draped with the United States Flag. Thus fireman, policeman and everyday citizens who were not veterans may opt to have their casket flag draped. However, the family of the deceased who were not veterans must provide the flag and it must measure 9.5 feet by 5 feet. For veterans who have been honorably discharged from the military, the flag is provided by the Veterans Administration and secured by the funeral director. However, the family must be able to provide a copy of the veterans discharge papers for proof of service. This being done and whenever possible, a military honor guard will be present at the committal service of the veteran to present the flag to the next of kin of the deceased. The rules for use of the flag during the wake and funeral service are as follows: 1. If the casket is closed the entire casket maybe draped with the flag. 2. If the casket is half open, the foot end of the casket maybe draped with a properly folded flag. 3. If the family does not wish the casket to be draped with the flag, it must be properly folded and placed in the panel of the open casket. 4. The blue and stars are always to be placed over the head and left shoulder of the deceased when the casket is closed and a similar position when the casket is half open and only the stars are to show when the flag is properly folded and placed in the panel of an open casket. 5. Nothing is to be set on top of the flag. Finally, if a flag is to be displayed during the funeral on a pole, it is always to be placed at the left of the casket. eighth-grade students performed “Peter Piper,” by Lon Berry, Climbin’ Up the Mountain, Children!” arranged by Rollo Dilworth and “Ubi Cartia,” composed by Mary Lynn Lightfoot, which the students sung in Latin. A panel of judges evaluated the students’ performance on specific NYSSMA criteria

including tone, intonation, balance, technique, accuracy/execution, diction, interpretation and discipline. “Our chamber choir is very proud to have received points for enthusiasm and expression,” said Scheneekloth.
