Unfortunately, as the numbers of homeless with special needs continues to grow on Long Island, there are no easy answers to the crisis. “The number of homeless households in Nassau and Suffolk Counties increased 25% in the last three years, from 548 households in 2013 to 682 households in 2016, according to the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless.” But the victories come one family at a time. The Closing Chapter When you look back over the course of your life, there are often certain places that seem to stand out as the setting for your most treasured memories. For me, that place was always my grandparents’ house. From holiday gatherings to backyard barbecues, childhood sleepovers to Yankee baseball game viewing; countless events were centered on that old beloved split level. My grandparents had moved there in 1960, one of the first of their family to have had the opportunity to “move eastward” to the country-like expanses of Long Island from the cozy
to us all is no longer “in the family,” passed on to another young couple, moving from the city, looking to begin their lives in the suburbs in much the same way that my grandparents had all those years ago. Sure, it was only a house; but it served as so much more to all those who had the pleasure of stepping foot across its threshold. And so, with the end of 2016 comes the closing of yet another chapter for my family. Life goes on, to be sure; but some things leave a sizable imprint so that life – as it was known, and lived – is never quite the same. Farewell to #580… Thanks for the memories.

Exploring the Origins of New Year’s Resolutions
For millenia, people around the world have commemorated the arrival of a new calendar year by adhering to various traditions. Once such tradition is making resolutions for the year ahead. Resolutions are widely practiced, but some people may not understand the origins of New Year’s resolutions and why they have become the norm. Some historians tie the practice
of making resolutions to the ancient Babylonians. More than 4,000 years ago, the Babylonians celebrated the New Year in March rather than January. The spring harvest was in March, and a festival called Akitu, which lasted 12 days, was celebrated. An important part of the festival was the crowning of a new king. Special rituals also affirmed a connection to the gods. The Babylonians made promises to the gods, which included vows to return borrowed objects and pay outstanding debts.
Resolutions can also be traced to ancient Rome. The Romans were instrumental in creating a more formal calendar, and the start of the new year was moved from March to January (January and February were added to the Roman calendar under the rule of Numa Pompilius). Julius Caesar wanted to honor January’s namesake, Janus, the Roman god of beginnings. Janus’ two faces enabled him to look back into the past and forward into the future. Sacrifices to Janus were made, and worshipers exchanged gifts
with one another. A custom of setting resolutions began during this period as well, with Romans promising to be good to one another. Eventually, these resolutions were funneled into prayers and fasting when Christianity was adopted by the Roman Empire. Other religious parallels include the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, which is a day of atonement and reflection as celebrants examine their wrongdoings and seek forgiveness and to behave better moving forward. Yom
Kippur follows Rosh Hashanah, Judaism’s own new year. Resolutions also may be loosely tied to Medieval times. During this time, knights took a “peacock vow” at the end of the Christmas season. Each year, these knights would reaffirm their commitment to chivalry. Today New Year’s resolutions are largely a secular tradition, but they’re still connected to a desire to be a good person and put one’s best self forward.

From emergency housing in Middle Island, CHI accepted her into the agency’s transitional housing in a home in East Patchogue. Due to the lack of permanent housing, CHI extended her lease at that home for almost two years, enabling Ms. Nielsen to care for her children and get back on her feet. This month Ms. Nielsen and her family moved into a new home, independent of CHI. Due to the help she received at CHI, Ms. Nielsen was able to become the kind of parent she has always wanted to be. Her older daughter was being bullied at school. She was able to get her the help she needed, sending her to a therapist and addressing it with the school. That same daughter will graduate early from high school this June and has already been accepted to Jamestown College in the fall. Her two younger children are enrolled in their new schools and doing well. Her younger daughter, Rayna, has special needs and receives occupational and physical therapy, and schooling that meets her needs. Now that both younger children are a little older and enrolled in school full-time, Ms. Nielsen is ready to start a full-time job. She is excited about the road ahead. “From my CHI case managers I learned to set small goals and work my way toward them and that’s how I’ve accomplished a lot of things in the past six years,” said Ms. Nielsen. “That’s what I’ve taught my children to do too. We stick together and support one another. This growth and change starts in the home.” “I feel so grateful for my time at the CHI house in East Patchogue. I had never heard of a program like this that really turned my life around. I hope that house brings as many memories to the next family as it did for mine.”

Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School held its first Poetry Out Loud Competition on December 15th. Six students – Sophia Hall, Cameren Jackson, Tiana Roe, Samantha Sattler, Sarah St. Jean, and Brianna Uribe – competed during the two rounds of poetry recitation. Each student took to the front of the class to recite two poems of their choice based on the list provided by Poetry Out Loud.
Sophia Hall was named the winner for her recitation of “The Daring One” and “Ode,” while Sarah St. Jean was chosen as runner-up for her recitation of “Siblings” and “Revenge.” The pair will compete in the regional finals at Nassau Community College in February. Judges included Walter G. O’Connell High School English teachers Faith Gottlieb and Daniel Barressi, Social Studies Chairperson Michelle
Penyy, and Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Principal Joseph Agosta. English teacher and Poetry Slam adviser Anastasia Kourtis served as the accuracy judge. Poetry Out Loud encourages students to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life.

Students at Great Neck Road Elementary School in the Copiague School District took a bite out of literacy, not literally but figuratively when the school held its first book tasting on December 15th and 16th. With the library transformed into a café – complete with red-andwhite checkered tablecloths and mood-setting tealights – the students were invited to sample all the wonderful books available at their fingertips. Donning her chef hat, chef Louise Gravina, also known as Great Neck Road’s literacy staff developer, invited students into the café
to get a taste of the literary delights. The students sampled different genres of books as each table contained a different category of books such as fiction, nonfiction, realistic fiction, historical fiction, mystery, books in a series and poetry. Students browsed through the selections, getting a taste of their favorites and recording them on their personal bookmarks so they could borrow them at a later date. After their book sampling, the students were treated to cookies and milk and had some time to reflect and discuss their favorite genres.
